The Catholics are wrong and have made their own adjustments to what is an acceptable manner in which to serve God. First of all, if you are going to serve God, then you should probably start out with following God's word as outlined in the Holy Bible.

Catholics are doing all sorts of things that the Bible says not to do. Let's start out with their total disregard for one of the ten commandments. #2 to be exact. It says EXACTLY as follows: You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God...". Okay, what does this mean? This means that you don't make a statue of Jesus OR Mary and then bow down to it, pray to it or worship it. The Roman Catholic church is doing this ALL the time! What is the matter with them? Which brings me to my next topic.

Mary was born of an earthy Mother AND Father. This means she was a plain human. NOT part of the Holy Trinity. The Bible says that you don't pray to anyone except for God and Jesus! Catholics are praying to Mary on a daily basis and even calling her the Mother of God! Another 2 total violations of the Bible's word of God! I don't know how anyone could read the Bible and decide to follow what it says and still be a Catholic! But wait, there's more!

The Bible also says that there is no earthy leader and shall be no earthly leader of the Christian faith. SO WHAT IS THE POPE FOR? Totally ridiculous. Another violation of God's word!

Another thing that the Catholics are doing that the Bible says not to do: Catholics believe in what is called Purgatory. They think that when you die, you go into this holding pattern where you aren't going to heaven yet and you aren't going to hell yet and you are on hold. At this time, Catholics believe that you can pray for the dead person and perhaps pray them into heaven. The Bible says that the second that you die, judgement is made. No Purgatory, no holding patten, that's it! You wen't to hell or you went to heaven.

I can literally go on all day about all the wrong things the Catholics are doing that the Bible says NOT to do. But I have to go to work right now and don't have the time to carry this on. I hope some Catholic will read this and think about reading the Bible and start to live by it if they want to call themself a Christian that follows the word of God to the "T". But it won't happen. Catholice are brain washed and they would make a statue of a monkey and prat to it if the Pope told them to.

Oh Boy

AUTHOR: Anne - (United States of America)

As a "consumer" of the Roman Catholic Church, I just have to respond to this drivel.

I don't worship Mary, nor bow down to her statues or images. Never have, never will.
I HONOR Mary for saying YES to the messenger Gabriel who announced to her that she would be the mother of our Savior. Read it in Luke 1:25-27. Read also Luke 1:47-49 where Mary herself tells Elizabeth, "all generations shall call me blessed." She didn't say, "All generations will worship me or create a statue and bow down before it."
The Catholic Church teaches that statues and images of Jesus, Mary and the saints as being nothing more than images to remind us of them, similar to how we have pictures of family members, loved ones, even pets to remind us of them, nothing more. We certainly wouldn't bow down and worship a photo of our child or husband!
I'm not understanding why you seem to have a big beef with the Church and what we believe. Yes, the Church has gone through some rough times, really rough times in recent years with its clergy, but so has the clergy of other faiths. We just don't hear too much about them in the media, probably because the Roman Catholic Church has more members than any other religion in the world: 1.18 billion.
By no means am I making excuses for the abuse by clergy, but the only way I have been able to answer the question why, is because they are human like the rest of us with the sinful nature we are all born with.

The first mention of Purgatory in the Bible is in 2 Maccabees 12:46: "Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from sin."
Unfortunately, you won't find this passage in a Protestant bible, because this book, as well as six more, are missing in their Old Testament known as the Apocrypha.
Book of Tobias
Book of Judith
Book of Wisdom
Ecclesiasticus
Prophecy of Baruch
First Book of Machabees
Second Book of Machabees

The Protestant Bible has 66, The Catholic Bible has 73.
Getting back to purgatory, you will not find that word in the Bible, nor will you find Trinity, or even the word Bible.

About purgatory, there are at least six other references in the Bible to a place of purification after we die.
I'm sorry, but if I died now as a strong believer and LOVER of Jesus Christ, yet still a sinner (but not so sinful that I am killing people every day or some other such serious sin), *I* would certainly want to get cleaned up a bit before meeting Him. Would you want to greet a guest in your house with a big, warm hug right after you've ran a marathon in 90 degree weather?
Catholics are not lessening the merit of Jesus dying on the cross for us by believing in purgatory. Yes, He did wash away all of our sins, past, present and future. In fact, we are appreciating this more by the desire to "wash up" before we meet Him-clean any residual gunk, as we would clean up before meeting a king or the president.
And yes, we are judged after we die immediately, and again in front of all on the last day.

The Catholic blogger below says it well;

"Say that there is no such thing as purgatory. What becomes of us? The Bible declares that nothing impurified can enter Heaven, but yet a careless word can defile the soul (Matthew 12:36); if there is no place of temporary punishment, the one guilty would be damned to Hell!
Nowhere in the Bible does it say faith alone. This is un-Scriptural, since Christ tells us that to enter into life we must keep the commandments, hear the Church, do the will of His Father and much more with faith. Yes, actions plus faith." - Jon Jakoblich

Anyway, I hope this helps. Maybe it will help someone else better understand what the Church teaches.

AUTHOR: Ken - (USA)

Convert whatever religion you may be, if any, to Muslim. Then you can go around committing JIHAD on ALL "graven images." and their creators.

Muslims don't just go around posting their complaints on Ripoff Report...they take action, even if it means you (and any others)  are eliminated from the earth's living creatures.

This "religion" should fit most of your personal requirements.

Let us know how this works out...what could possibly go wrong?

Catholic ripoffs?

AUTHOR: Anonymous - (United States of America)

Facts, my friend, facts. You failed to quote one specific Bible passage to support your misguided opinion on the Catholic Church. Pay attention to what the Church preaches rather than what some priests may do. Jesus said in Matt. 23: 2-3 "Scribes and Pharisees sit on Moses chair, therefore, do what they say but don't do what they do."

You want to do EXACTLY what the bible says?

AUTHOR: voiceofreason - (United States of America)

Alrighty Mister Bible-Brain, let's see how many biblical LAWS you keep. (and by the way, my Baptist mentors taught me that we're saved by grace alone, not by what laws we keep, so if I also were to find comfort by saying a Hail Mary - a BIG NO NO law-breaker to you - but have nonetheless accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior, then I am STILL saved by his grace)

Do you, Sir, keep kosher? Since the Bible insists on it, regardless of what Paul might be understood to have said later on.
Do you keep SATURDAY as your sabbath, either in addition to or instead of Sunday, since the Bible says the 7th day is the rest day, not the 1st?
Do you REFRAIN from throwing the first stones at people you think are doing the wrong thing, ie: Catholics? Jesus DID say something about that, and that's Jesus talking, not just Paul.

Are you the Sayer of the Law from the Island of Dr Moreau? What is the law! Grace is above all law and you of all people ought to believe that. Who are you to say that Catholics are not fulfilling their requirement for God's grace just because they keep various traditions and practices that others might construe as "against the law"?

And again I ask, what manner of Christian disparages whatever honor anyone accords the woman who the 1 God above us chose to bear and raise up his own earthly manifestation? I don't need to find comfort in icons depicting her, but others do and I would never stoop to call such Christians idolators. Many people will ask deceased family for help interceding with God in times of trouble. And Mary is uber family to all of us.

I'm fairly certain nobody here will ever convince you, or those like you, that you poison people against fundamentalist Christianity instead of drawing them to it. Our pastor is your polar opposite Thank God. I've been in churches where the pastors are more like you - angry, forbidding and rigid, who leave congregants lower as they leave church, instead of elevated higher.

And I stand here as a fundamentalist with reason to counter balance you.

I was born Roman Catholic

AUTHOR: Inspector - (USA)

There are many versions of the bible each quoting a little differently and each quotation can be used to usurp the other.  The point here is if it makes one comfortable without causing harm to anyone else and makes life easier to bear then, it is good.

There is enough pain, suffering, and hatred in the world.  If believing in something harmless alleviates that pain, it is good.  Whether it is true or false becomes less important.

You were not called upon by God to destroy the non-believers as the Muslims feel.

I can remember when I was living in the middle east and a high ranking muslim told me that Christian beliefs in Jesus was a lie in his attempt to convert me to Islam.   He was convinced that the Christians were the misled.  This is why the Muslims will never be at peace with themselves or anyone else.

Why do you care?  Stop being obtuse and spreading hatred, you will not change anyones opinion nor convert anyone to your way of thinking.  Your approach is anarchistic.  Leave it be.  Further rhetoric is futile.

Dear "Voice of Reason" (Can't stand behind your real name, huh?)

AUTHOR: John Emefcee - (USA)

You said that nobody is worshiping Mary. That is simply not true. When make statues of Mary, When you bow down to a statues of Mary, When you pray to Mary and statues of Mary, you are therefore worshiping Mary.

Then you said "They are venerating her" that's just playing word games and not calling it what it is.

Then you brought up another lame analogy by asking me "WHAT sir, exactly, have YOU done for anybody" The answer is, I am not the one they are bowing down to and worshiping!

Then you said "There are many folks out there that cannot grasp a personal relationshipwith an invisible, seemingly unapproachable God" Well you know, if Christians have a problem with believing in and praying to invisible people in the sky then that is their problem. I am just saying that if you are going to carry a Bible and swear to live by it's rules, THEN DO IT and don't be hypocrites like the Catholic Church.

You give the excuse of "They are simply focal points for devotion and prayer, and objects honoring great historical figures" well you know... the Bible says not to do that, so what are you going to do?

You asked me who the blazing devil am I to rip this away from them? It's called not being a hypocrite and thinking... Okay, I'll just violate the terms of the Bible just to make myself feel better. If that was allowed, then you might as well just refuse to pay any attention to any of the 10 commandments or the rest of the Bible for that matter.

I am not making a mockery, the Catholic Church is doing that for us.

Pretty funny

AUTHOR: Ramjet - (U.S.A.)

I know, and am related to many religious people, christian and otherwise.  I am not religious but we get along great, in fact my very best friend is a self proclaimed christian.  We tease each other  in a friendly way but we respect each others positions.

You, on the other hand are apparently incapable of respecting people who believe differently from you.  this is a childish and immature position. A large part of what's wrong with the world today is people's inability to respect that people have differing opinions.  In fact in some religions, if you disagree, you are open to being killed.

Fanatics in all religions are dangerous people and you are a little scary.  None of the 'christians' I know would dream of attacking someone like your silly tirades.  You are doing yourself and your church no good with this attitude.

Incidentally, Catholics have no obligation whatsoever to justify their beliefs to anyone and certainly not to some nut case like you.

Oh Lord, literally

AUTHOR: voiceofreason - (United States of America)

To the OP, You're not looking too Christian by calling someone who disagrees with you "d**k weed". My Christianity is Southern Baptist leaning, but our church, despite having obvious issues with Catholic dogma and traditions, respects Catholics as fellow believers in Christ.

And I have an appreciation for things Catholic that many people fail to consider. Mary certainly was given a place of veneration in modern Catholicism. It's not entirely unwarranted. Nobody is WORSHIPPING her. They are venerating her. There's a major difference. She's accorded a special place of honor as the human being who carried, gave birth to, and raised God's own manifestation as a human being. And turning to her as a mother figure in times of crisis has historical tradition going back to similar Jewish prayers to Rachel, something no other Jewish matriarch is accorded. If it brings comfort to weak and troubled believers who the devil are you to make an issue of it?

In short, we all know what Mary did for creation. WHAT sir, exactly, have YOU done for anybody, other than mindlessly attack a few hundred million fellow Christians, and one nice old gent that you despicably, without provocation, called a "d**k weed"?

As for the idols, lets put an end to this malarkey. Maybe maintaining such visual representations of God and sanctified historical figures in the church is not the best policy, but there are many folks out there that cannot grasp a personal relationship with an invisible, seemingly unapproachable God. If having an iconic focus for their prayers and devotion helps them to connect, I think Jesus is both God and Man enough to let it slide. Please show us the contract he signed with you naming you his attack dog to root all this out. It's not like any Catholic thinks these statues or images are living Gods, like polytheists in ancient times thought. They are simply focal points for devotion and prayer, and objects honoring great historical figures. They also provide a comfort for those who are wired for visual connecting instead of literal. Some people can connect with just the written word; others need things illustrated.

In this same vein, being able to lean on a parish priest, and so on and so forth up the church hierarchy to the Pope, as middle men to intercede with Jesus/God on ones behalf, I don't see the evil in this. If it were up to you, those who are too intimidated by the prospect of having to deal with God on their own without any intermediary would basically be cut off from Jesus. He doesn't want that. People have fears, and even though many Catholics probably have no such fears, nor are particularly interested in iconic imagery, there are others who rely on this system to interact with God. Who the blazing devil are you to rip it away from them?

And Jesus did appoint Peter as the rock his church would be built on. To have no leadership of any kind is to have anarchy. Most Protestant denominations have some kind of overall governance.

And you're not exactly going to hear much, if anything at all, about devoted Catholic clergy who serve their parishes and charities well. You only hear about the abuse. And just because the RC leadership perhaps is a bit over the top, with the pomp, ceremony, waste, incompetent reaction to very real problems, etc, that doesn't negate the very real service many lower clergy perform day in and out.

Good God, man, get a bloody life and do something to glorify God instead of making a mockery of him in the eyes of those looking for someone like you to hold up as a reason not to believe.

I, mistakenly it appears, thought you were a person capable of participating in a reasoned debate on the subject of this Ripoff Report...I guess, I could be wrong about that.

If you're a person of your convictions (right or wrong) and are eager to change the status quo, take it up with the Catholic hierarchy.

If, as I suspect, you go onto forums (and this is a form of a forum) post YOUR opinion and don't want to hear differing opinions, you're bound to go through life with many disappointments.

I would recommend "tell it to your priest and avoid these postings."  He may kiss your butt, I WON'T.

Typical attitude

AUTHOR: Ramjet - (U.S.A.)

Just because Christian's are SUPPOSED to believe the bible does not make it true.  By the way, there are quite a number of books and changes that protestants have made to the bible over the years to achieve their goals, not just catholics.  Incidentally, catholics are christians too. There is nothing holy about the 'bible'. Interesting to read but it has no particular meaning to most people in the world.

I don't care what you believe, it's none of my business, why do you think you get to tell other people what to believe - or - not believe.

So because I disagree with you it makes me a dickweed, whatever the hell that means.  Sounds like a very 'christian' attitude to me.  LOL.

Sorry, you do not get to tell anyone what to believe, you are just a typical dangerous fanatic.  That's something we definitely don't need.

Before any of your screed means a thing, you have to prove that your source of information is reliable and has proper credentials.

'the bible' is nothing but a collection of old stories, there are no original documents and we have no idea who or what wrote the books. The reason you believe it is just because you believe it, nothing more.  It's no different from other 'holy' writings from every other religion.

You can, of course, post anything you want to here but don't expect people to take your writing seriously, I doubt you are any authority.  You don't get to tell other people what to believe.

However, you have made some interesting points and I will bring them up with my priest.  As a Catholic, I do believe the things you've pointed out as being contrary to Biblical teachings.
