SEO Reputation Management at its best!

Our community of 400 homes is a private property, gated residential development.

Our local telephone company is Embarq and the "legitimate" phone books were delivered to our residents last week.

The Talking Phone Book (out of their Gainesville distribution center) came around tonight and tossed 400 books on peoples driveways. They know to do this at night because for the past several years without success I have tried to get them to stop and they now prefer to do this under cover of darkness.

Not only have I been brushed off by their representatives when I call but I have also been told by the "tossers" that "if I pay property taxes then they have every right to come onto my private property". They usually invoke the standard line..."It's OK - we're distributing the 'PHONE BOOK' to the residents."

This is not the phone book. It is nothing more than a 10 pound advertising supplement. I wish their advertisers knew what happens to the books. There's probably an entire section of the county landfill dedicated to these books. I end up gathering my maintenance staff the following morning to gather up all the trash and call for a special pick up from our waste disposal company. For me, this is an unwanted waste of time and an additional expense. If it's rainy or windy, this poses an additional challenge.

I guess my message is targeted primarily to the advertisers. Before spending your advertising budget on this, or other similar media (Yellow Book), do some research and do not rely on their self-serving distribution numbers. They'll show you some very pretty maps and quote some fairly impressive figures. Unless there are some technologically sophisticated seagulls with cell phones at the landfill, you're not likely to get business calls from our community. I would venture to say that we, as a community, are not the anomaly.

President and CEO, Richard D. Lewis, if you're listening, please consider revamping your business plan. The current one is doomed to eventual failure and backlash. I personally make it a point to call 5 advertisers at random on a daily basis. If there are other property owners who have been similarly abused, forget trying to call the company or distribution center. "It's the Phone Book", don't you know. Instead, take 10 minutes each day and call 5 advertisers. Let your fingers do the walking. Trust me...this is far more effective than having some moron explain to you that there is no longer such a concept as private property.

Shall we destroy further jobs?

AUTHOR: planes - (USA)

You know, with the present economy, I am not one to wish demise on any company.
A complaint like this is foolish.  First, its not a real rip-off.  The person making the complaint is simply annoyed at a delivery method.
I have seen these guys working in my city and these guys work their butts off.
Do we really want to be restricting these people or destroying their income.
I say no.  OK, so you had to pick up a book from your driveway.  Was it in usable condition?  Was it damaged?  I would guess not.  So pick the book up and bring it inside your house or throw it away.  For heavens sake.  There are enough problems in this world.  Find one worthwhile to marry not some poor bloke working late into the evening trying to make a few extra bucks.  My god!

Unfortunatley Consumers are not Married to Embarq!

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

You claim to know so much about phone books but yet you are clueless.  It's ignorent individuals like yourself that hurt advertisers trying to make a living.  Consumers have zero loyalty to what ever yellow page directory they use, they just need something that is readily available when there toilet breaks, tree falls on house, or car breaks down, more specifically in your community I would guess to say that Bail Bondsman gets used frequently.  You sound like a very popular woman in your community, possibly a max of 20 friends, but there is a consumer population of over 300,000 in Marion county so run for office before you try to be the Union Leader and speak for everyone else.  Some markets acrossed the country receive 3, 4, or five books.  It's called business and clearly the community can support it or else these billion dollar yellow page companies would not publish.  If there was only one option for advertisers that company could charge whatever they want thus being a monoply and pricing out the mom and pop businesses that you probably contract out from time to time.  I will end on this note, even though you have a sour taste in your mouth for the "10 pound advertising supplement" weigh your EMBARQ book first, I guarantee you it's the heaviest and it's not because it has the most ads.  You will find going forward that less phone books will be around and each market will probably only sustain 2 but consumers will always have a need to find products and services and unfortunatley yellow pages is going to be a viable option for years to come.

Sincerely,

I hate HATERS!!!
