On Wednesday, May 8th, I removed a wheel from my emergency generator to fix a flat tire. I had broken the bead of the tire and removed the tube, it was ruined. I bought the tube ,$6.99 + tax. asked if they could mount and inflate it for me. I was told 'not today, probably tomorrow and there would be a charge (but did not say how much) and I foolishly didn't ask. I just said I'd take it home to see if I could do it and if I couldn't, I'd be back.
I did get the tube properly placed back in the tire with the 'L-stem' in place. but I didn't have the tools or strength to force the remaining bead back over the rim, so I took it back to the Tool Shack to get that done.
On Thursday, May 9th, I called the Tool Shack in the afternoon to check on my tire/wheel. The clerk said it was ready and the charge was $19.17 ! I was appalled, I couldn't believe it! I went to pick it up and said to the clerk the the charge was 'unreal' for a five minute job. Another clerk who overheard my remarks said they didn't have 'automatic tools' to put the bead back over the rim, it was manual labor to the tune of $18.00 + tax.
On the invoice they state 'tire off rim, mount tire on and inflate rim' and further on they say 'work completed - dismounted, remounted tire on front/castor wheel'. That's absolutely false. I brought the tire/wheel in with the tube in place inside the tire and required only putting the bead back over the rim and inflate it.
I asked them if they'd ever heard of the Ripoff Report, they said 'no', so I said you will.
On Friday, May 10th, I had to pick up a few things from Walmart, so just for the hell of it I went to the Auto Dept and unloaded my tale of misfortune to the clerk there. He said they didn't have the automatic tools either, but they would always do a task like that as 'a courtesy', no charge.
Live and learn. You can bet your bottom dollar I'll never patronize the Tool Shack again!! Kinda makes me wonder if the fact that I'll be 81 years old in two months marks me as 'easy pickings'. The 'old folks' won't make trouble! What do you think? Let the buyer beware!
