These people called my daughter and told her that her husband was going to jail on a felony if she didn't give them a credit card number or make immediate payment.  They laughed at her when she began to cry and were really rude and unkind.  This type of harrassament is against the law and I will be filling a complaint with my local DA and with the FTC for the violations they committed.  My daughter was able to record the call and we have enough evidance to take this to the proper authorities.  Do not allow these people tp scare you into paying them.  That is their tactic, scare people into paying.  If this happens to you, you can also file a complaint.  This is directly from the Federal Trade Commission website:

False statements.

Debt collectors may not lie when they are trying to collect a debt. For example, they may not:

falsely claim that they are attorneys or government representatives; 

falsely claim that you have committed a crime;

falsely represent that they operate or work for a credit reporting company;

misrepresent the amount you owe;

indicate that papers they send you are legal forms if they arent; or indicate that papers they send to you arent legal forms if they are.
