Here we go again

AUTHOR: Marc - (U.S.A.)

I'm waiting for someone to complain now, about how K-Mart has all the "same" parts for .99 each and Checkers had the wires on sale for 10.00, etc. Happens every time. On the suface, it sounds like your vehicle was simply run down and needed a tune-up to get things right for the winter. But then, it could have a loose or dirty battery connection, only the mechanic knows for sure.

10% mark up?

AUTHOR: Eric - (U.S.A.)

I guarantee you there is atleast a mark up of 50% on some parts. Shops make a living of the parts. a 10 % markup is asking a little much. There is this big misconception on the consumer side that the shops get great discounts because of our buying power. Wrong. Yes a direct vender (wagner brake pads) gives us a tremendous deal but your Napas carquest and other outlets charge us about the same. If I was only making 10 bucks for every hundred bucks of parts I sell, my doors wouldnt be open long.

unrelated repairs

AUTHOR: Dean - (U.S.A.)

You stated that your car would not turn over.
The you said they did a major tune-up.
I have been an ASE certified mechanic for 18 years now and can say that if your car would not turn over when taken in none of the repairs you listed would fix that.
If the problem was that it would not turn over you should have had to replace something in the starting system, ie.. starter, solenoid, battery cables, battery, ignition switch etc....
The parts you listed above can be removed from the engine and it will still turn over, won't start but will crank.
Now, if your car cranked but failed to start they did what was needed to make it run.

Did they fix your problem??
If so and you feel the pricing was out of line, take the bill to some other shops and see how much they would have charged.

Good Luck

appears to be normal cost for parts and labor

AUTHOR: David - (U.S.A.)

The price may seem high and if it was me doing the work I would have knocked off the labor for plugs and wireswhich would have saved you about 84.53 dollars. Other than that the prices seem about right for a normal car. Check with your local parts store you should fine the parts about the same within 10% if not then go to them and ask for an adjustment.
Last it appears that they did not charge you for a diagnostic check which normally runs a mim of one hour at about 50 - 80 dollars.
It may seem like alot but parts and labor are not cheap and if it is a good mechanic then you got a fair deal
