My daughter stopped to have her car checked due to "service vehicle soon" light coming on. Asked Tires Plus to look at it and give quote. Quote was for over $400 dollars. Upon finding out that two other service stations wanted under $200 for the same work she asked Tires Plus not to do anything. The cost to recover her car was $75.

Ripped off and discriminated against.

I hear this kind of thing all the time. I am an ASE certified technician and have been in the business 1o years. I have paid to go to school to learn how to diagnose and fix the very technical vehicles on the road today. Most of the time when someone has a complaint about price, it is because the comparisons are not equal. To have a vehicle repaired properly, use the best quality parts available. If you hunt around for the cheapest price, you are going to get the cheapest quality repair. Parts manfg's fill a niche. You can buy a brake rotor for $20.00 or $80.00. The difference is in the quality. Most qualified axperienced Techs are going to recommend the best quality parts which are also the most expensive. This is in your best interest. They know your chances are much higher for problems if you pick the cheap parts. Fact is fact. People expect technicians to spend time figuring out a cars problem and then fixing it for next to nothing. The going labor rate per hour at dealerships are $80-$100. Tires plus is $60-$80.

How much is your time worth?

AUTHOR: R - (U.S.A.)

What exactly are you complaining about? The fact that a qualified technician (not mechanic) was able to pinpoint your problem. That he was able to do so and charge you a fraction of what a dealer would have charged you?

He did so by purchasing a scan tool that he paid for (out of his own pocket for close to $5000)? That he was willing to share his knowledge with you for a mere $75?

Or is the fact that there are people out there that will tell you that they can plug a part in for next to nothing that have no idea of how those parts function or what can happen if those parts fail to correct your problem?

I have been in the automotive repair business for nearly 20 years and it still amazes me every day that people can go to the doctor and not even blink about the $80 visit to check them out and see what is wrong with them and then go to the pharmacy and spend another $50 to get the medicine to cure them. but when they are asked to do the same thing with thier cars they feel ripped off.

The only person ripped off here was the man who had to put up with your antics when you didn't want to pay for the work that you requested.

#3 UPDATE EX-employee responds

the concrete truth

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

Well to start i was a tires plus service manager here in fla. to tell you the truth most of these so called companys dont care about you or anyone for that fact. I am a ase master technican i have 14 years of experience. Now i have been a manager for the past seven.

The public is viewed as a dollar figure. They figure the average person is worth 150 dollars a visit. so they will tell u anything to keep that average up.

Most of the managers and district managers have not a clue on how a car operates SO thats part of the problem and alot of the so called mechanics are butchers.

it is hard to find a good mechanic who is fair and knowledgeable. so in closeing take your car to a repair facility that is reputable. you might pay a little more but youll get better service GAURENTEED. i am also from johnstown but live here in fla. alot of ripoff places here stay away from anyplace that has tire in the name
