I own a 2002 Toyota Rav 4, and recently received a letter about  a "Harsh Shift" problem that toyota was aware of in my model. When I went to the dealership ( Elk Grove Toyota ) I was informed that my car was over the warranty ! This problem is because of Toyota's defective product... not anything I did, and not because of the mileage on my car. They need to fix their defective product, haven't they had enough recalls lately. I will never buy another Toyota.

Ah..so the sludge poems were the reason and not the sludge?

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

I had no idea. Does Karl mean if I google "Jim Press" I will find he resigned due to a sludge poem that was written and left here by Karl about a year ago?

Or if a google "Katsuaki Watanabe" I will find he was replaced because of another sludge poem written and left here by Karl?

Or, if I google "Akio Toyoda", I will find his future with Toyota is based on a sludge poem written and left here by Karl?

Yeah, that must be it..it wasn't the troubles Toyota has been having that resulted in any resignations or replacements at Toyota..it was the sludge poems left here by Karl. I am surprised none of the CEOs had commented here on the poems if it had such an effect.

Pavageau, Exactly two weeks after "SLUDGE POEM" was posted....

AUTHOR: Karl - (USA)

here at Ripoff Report the CEO of Toyota, Jim Press, announced his resignation. Jim Press announced his resignation with Toyota Corporation on 9-6-2007. 'Sludge Poem' was posted on 8-23-2007.

A little over a year after 'Sludge Poem 2' was posted about Toyota and its President in Japan, Katsuaki Watanabe, he was removed from his position as President and replaced by Akio Toyoda.

"SLUDGE POEM 3" is about Akio Toyoda and Toyota Corporation.

I 'believe', all these 'sludge poems'..

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

..are 'sludge'.

Has anyone else but me ever responded to a sludge poem other then to agree it is total sludge?

Or, has these sludge poems that are written and submitted by Karl..and ONLY by Karl..captured the attention of ANYONE who can help or make a difference?

If not...well what can I suggest? If the poetry reading did not help your engine sludge..and Toyota did not...then change your oil more often and you just might find..8-10 years after driving the vehicle the engine may not fail due to gunking up of the oil. I also suggest using a high quality motor oil and not the crap they dispense out of a nozzle from a 10 minute oil change place.

Any questions?

Maybe I am crazy, but...

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

..it seems this "Karl" is trying to make some case against Toyota and thier laywers, based on some report lodged back in 2007..for some kind of fuel additive which has NOTHING to do with Toyota??

You see, this is the problem. Too many are suckered into believing there is some kind of "magic instant" pill that can cure anything...be it your car, your health, you bills, your mortgage etc..but there is NO magic pill. Vehicles REQUIRE maintenance, and your heath requires you to eat right and get some excessive, your bills require on time payments..you know...what is natural for humans to do to survive.

"They have changed the word recall to "issue" so they don't have to pay for their mistakes. "

After all of the postings above, it's simply amazing that you still do not get this.    A recall is a very specific thing.   It is either mandated by NHTSA, or voluntarily performed by the manufacturer (to keep NHTSA of their butts).   A recall is done when a defect poses an immediate risk to safety.   All manufacturers operate under the same rules with regard to recalls.

Your problem would never have qualified as a recall under any circumstances.  Toyota did not change the meaning of the word recall.   You just never knew what it meant in the first place.   Defects outside of the warranty period happen all the time and people pay to get them fixed every day.   I know you think you are special and Toyota should fix your 8 yr. old car for free, but you're not and they're not.

AUTHOR: pavageau - (United States of America)

This is hilarious, you obviously work for Toyota.... so I'll tell you what you want to hear. Yes, other auto manufacturers sometimes make crappy cars also ! Happy now ? that doesn't change the fact that Toyota makes exceptionally bad cars and doesn't stand behind them.

Meeting the worst standards because everyone else does it too is unacceptable. This is why the American auto industry went to hell ,and Toyota probably will too. Anyone can buy these pieces of junk if they want to. I'm only telling those who choose to listen Beware ,They have changed the word recall to "issue" so they don't have to pay for their mistakes.

Anyone can stay at this site and type in 281113 and read that Ripoff Report which was posted on October 26th, 2007, which was well before the 14 Million+ recalls that Toyota had over the past 12 months.

*Hiding and covering-up problems about vehicles is not a good idea, right? It could put a lot of innocent people's lives at risk, wouldn't everyone agree?

Still did not answer the question...

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

"..But can anyone post a vehicle manufacturer that has a lifetime warranty against defects?.."

Do a little research. EVERY manufacture has recalls, some more then Toyota.. and defects. NONE of them provide a lifetime warranty against defects.

So..you can hate Toyota all you want. I would never buy one myself. But I am aware that with ANY make or model vehicle I buy, that the warranty will not cover any defects once the warranty expires..unless it had a lifetime warranty against defects.

I ask again, which manufacturer has a lifetime warranty against defects, or, which one(s) will warranty defects after the warranty expires? Oh...Toyota as recalls this past year..almost 4 million floor mats and sticking gas pedals..SAFETY RECALLS REGARDING VEHICLES UNDER WARRANTY...but who else has had millions of recalls?

Ford Recall History Puts Toyota Recalls in Perspective

Since the NHTSA started keeping records, Ford Motors has recalled over 20 million vehicles, the highest recall year being 1996 with over 7.6 million units. Thus, while the current recall hype might be news to the US consumer who favors Japanese models over their American counterpart, the news of Toyotas 5 million units recalled could be overshadowed by Fords recall history.

Now to be fair...yes Karl the NUTCASE told you 14 million were recalled this year...so, is your Toyota a 2009-2010? No, it is a 2002. So do an internet search of vehicles from 2002..and see if Toyota has the most recalls...and see if any other make or model vehicle from 2002, is covered in late 2010 for defects.

If you can document this, then this report have an ounce of merit. I will even help you by posting the links..

No, I don't expect a lifetime warranty on a car that is made properly. A part that is faulty will fail on a low mileage vehicle or a high mileage vehicle.  You may want to read the post previous to this one . TOYOTA HAS RECALLED 14 MILLION CARS OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS. I'ts not my imagination.... they build an inferior product. That is why I won't buy another one. I want other consumers to know that they may just change the wording when they have a problem ,so that they don't have to stand behind their cars.

Warranty..

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

There really is no debate..

Here is a warranty from Toyota..same as any other vehicle warranty..

This warranty covers any repair or replacement of components which fail under normal use due to a defect in materials or workmanship.

So, Toyota DOES warranty defects...that is until the warranty is up. Then the vehicle owner must pay out of pocket. I do not think Toyotas come with a lifetime warranty.

A safety recall is another issue. Then under some circumstances they will repair or replace parts that are out of warranty.

IF you do not want to buy another Toyota just because they will not fix a defect that is out of warranty that is your choice. But can anyone post a vehicle manufacturer that has a lifetime warranty against defects? I highly doubt it.

" what if the problem was not caused by wear and tear but by faulty parts ?"

Wouldn't you say that is a defect?    I think my posts have been very clear about when defects are covered.

You seem to think that you should have lifetime coverage for parts that fail early.  That is exactly what a warranty covers and it does so only for the time and mileage specified.   In fact, most warranties specifically exclude common wear and tear parts.  The point of the warranty is defective parts and systems.

All cars have defects in both design and manufacture.  It's a fact of life.  If you want to be perpetually protected from them, only own cars that are under warranty.  I actually used to do this and it's very nice if you can afford it.   Outside the warranty, it's your responsibility (except safety recalls).  I know you don't like to hear that, but it's really that simple.

By the way, I'm not saying you shouldn't let everyone know about this early failure.  If a particular car has a flaw that makes certain parts fail earlier than expected, it's a good thing to get the word out.  The Internet has become a valuable tool in that respect.

Wrong

AUTHOR: Ramjet - (U.S.A.)

You are absolutely and completely wrong.  You do not understand the difference between warranty, recall and Technical Service Bulletins. You can go to Edmunds.com and see service bulletins and recalls for all cars.  You may find that Toyota doesn't have the most.

Plus you are too stubborn and hard headed to even try to understand.

I get it

AUTHOR: pavageau - (United States of America)

So the dispute is not whether or not it's a defect...... the dispute is if Toyota should back up their product ? I understand that things go wrong with normal wear and tear on a vehicle, what if the problem was not caused by wear and tear but by faulty parts ?

It's amazing to me that people are so appalled that I have a problem with a crappy product ....I guess that's what happened to the American auto industry, the same people who are satisfied to buy crap are the ones making it. By the way why do you assume there haven't been any other problems with this automobile ? Doesn't anyone watch the news? Toyota has had a multitude of recalls for their inferior products !  If Toyota puts faulty parts in their cars ,THEY should fix it.... no matter when they put the parts in.

AUTHOR: Flynrider - (USA)

" ITS STILL A RECALL OF A DEFECT!!!!! "

No, it's not.   It's a notification that some vehicles may have that particular defect.  If it's under warranty, they'll fix it.  That's it.     Recalls are issued for safety related defects and are paid for by the manufacturer.    You simply do not know what you're talking about.

You still seem to be missing the basic function of a warranty.  All vehicles have defects.  The warranty covers you for those defects for a given period of time or mileage.   After that, you pay to fix any defects.   The only exception to this are safety recalls mandated by NHTSA or done voluntarily by the manufacturer.

Are you having a problem?

AUTHOR: JAFO - (USA)

Are you having a problem with harsh shifting?  If not, then no they are not going to fix what ain't broke. If you are, press the issue but understand that because you are out of warranty it will be an uphill battle trying to get any kind of discount. The letter was meant to make you aware of a problem that has been identified in your model vehicle, not necessarily your specific one.  Whatever is causing the issue in other vehicles of your model may be perfectly fine in yours.  Not every vehicle of a particular model experiences every problem that every owner of the model has.

#25 Consumer Suggestion

Purchasing the extended warranties might have been your best option.

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

I have to say that posts like these simply amaze me. People buy a product and then expect a lifetime warranty when none was expressed or implied in any way. This 2002 year model vehicle was manufactured in 2001, and now, the 2011 models are out which were manufactured in 2010. So, in reality that is a 9 year old vehicle and you expect it to still be under warranty? Time for a reality check here.

If this product was defective, WHY did you not take it back sooner, like when it was under warranty? If you never would have gotten that letter, you would have had no problem, right?

What about an extended warranty? Did you buy one of those? Did you buy another one when that one expired?

The fact of the matter is that you have 2 choices with any vehicle. You can buy the warranty, or you can pay out of pocket for repairs. That is reality.

Don't be so cheap. Buy the extended warranty, or pay for the repairs.

What about service? I can guarantee that you are one of those tightwads who will not do PROPER service on the vehicle too. But then you want it to last forever, but only on someone elses dime.

Also, what other problems have you had with that 9 year old vehicle? NONE, I would bet. So that "junk" held up pretty good, right?

And, you never mentioned the mileage either. I bet that Toyota has every bit of 150,000 miles on it.

Get over it.

crappy parts make crappy cars

AUTHOR: pavageau - (United States of America)

What is it that you don't understand ?  Toyota sent the letter because they were AWARE of their defective auto part, The condition THEY refer to has nothing to do with the mileage on my well maintained car. It's not like Toyota hasn't had a terrific record of incredibly crappy cars that have been subject to a recall just about every week !  TOYOTA Cars are crap and they can change the name of a recall to a "condition" or "issue" and guess what? ITS STILL A RECALL OF A DEFECT!!!!!  They need to be responsible when they put an inferior part in their car, or don't manufacture it properly....What department at Toyota do you work in ?

Reality check

AUTHOR: Flynrider - (USA)

Your vehicle is 8 years old.   How long do you expect Toyota to foot the bills?

Your warranty covered defects for a given period of time and mileage.  When the warranty ends, then you pay to fix them.   That's how it works.   What about that don't you understand?  You seem to imply that other car companies routinely pay to fix non-safety defects outside of the warranty.  That's not the case.   I can pull up half a dozen service letters that identify possible defects on the truck that I own (not a Toyota) and the manufacturer isn't going to pay anything for a fix.  I wouldn't expect them to either.

BTW, recalls are not the same as service bulletins or service letters.  You are expected to pay for the latter if you're not covered by the warranty.

Toyota's response

AUTHOR: pavageau - (United States of America)

Toyota has a new name for "recall" , now they call them "issues " and think they shouldn't have to fix them!  they sent a letter to me about an "issue " with my Rav 4 and when I complained that they wouldn't fix it, they said it wasn't an actual "recall"!!!!!  A DEFECT BY ANY OTHER NAME IS STILL A DEFECT. Do not buy a Toyota for any reason, there are other auto manufacturers that stand by their products. As many recalls as Toyota has had lately, you'd think they would be glad to fix their terrible products. Since the company has a new name for RECALL THEY DON'T HAVE TO FIX ANYTHING......BEWARE .
