Return flight leaves from Frankfurt at 8 am on Lufthansa to London. Connecting United Airlines flight leaves at 11 am in London.
I asked United as well as Travelocity and Lufthansa if I could check in in London instead of Frankfurt because I would have to arrive at 6am in Frankfurt from Palma de Mallorca. There are no flights leaving that early from Palma. I could take a plane directly to London but because of the stubborness of these companies I have to leave a day earlier with a 24 hour layover in Frankfurt.
All that I was asking them was not to be on the plane from Frankfurt to LOndon (giving them the opportunity to sell the ticked to someone else). The information they gave me was: if you don't board the Frankfurt - London plane we are not going to let you board the plane from London to Los Angeles.
All what they would have to do is put a little note into their computer but obviously fees and penalties are their most important source of revenue.

Sometimes you don't have any other choices - London airport screeners incompetent ?

And that terrorist theorie does not make sense to me at all: it was not about checking the luggage in at FRA and boarding in London.
That's almost like you want to say that passengers have to go through Frankfurt if they want to fly from London to LAX because the screeners in London are morons...
And since it is obviously possible ... for a $ 250 fee... it can't be a security issue, it is about extra revenue. A 30 seconds computer job for the price of an entire flight.

Why did you book it that way?

I would guess the refusal to let you board in London without taking the Frankfurt to London segment may be due more to Homeland Security than a desire to screw you over for fees.
