Tropical Sails runs a "bait" operation where they advertise lowball prices in their brochures and then charge their clients more than their published prices. Daniel Oppliger, owner of Tropical Sails Corp. is running a scam.
For this November Solar Eclipse 2012 Cruise he advertises a J cabin on the Dawn Princess for $1799 plus $55 in taxes but then tells me that the taxes are higher and that I will have to pay a fuel surcharge which makes for a higher price than he advertised.
He does not provide astronomy lectures on this cruise like Melitacruises did on their China eclipse cruise but only a talk about the eclipse and he provides a cocktail party but no other group activities other than group dining. He has no professional astronomers on the cruise unlike Melitacruises that had several professional scientists giving lectures every day of their cruise. This is hardly a "solar eclipse" cruise but simply a cruise that coincides with a solar eclipse.
Unlike Melitacruises that provided shore excursions on their cruise for all their clients, Dan Oppliger leaves his clients on their own and does not provide shore excursions and can not assist in providing shore excursions for those of his clients who want them. He leaves his clients in the ports of call completely on their own, high and dry. This is hardly what one would expect for a professionally run Solar Eclipse Cruise.
There is another ripoffreport on this website that calls Dan Oppliger a crook where he overcharged a client. When I mentioned this to him he gave me false information about this denying that he overcharged the client. From my investigation of this it is clear that Dan Oppliger and his Tropical Sails Corp. is a scam operation.
Before posting this report, I emailed Dan Oppliger asking him to explain himself and that if he didn't I would be posting this report. I refused to respond to my email confirming that he is a scam artist.
