*UPDATE Employee: stupid people who rent trucks
This letter is to tell you about the weekend from hell that I experienced with a U-Haul company that operates on Colby Drive in Waterloo and is Managed by a women named Sherry Grundstrom.Apparently this is not the first time she has caused customers this nightmare, but, hopefully the last.
I rented 2 X 26 foot trucks from 2 different U-Haul companies. Truck # 1 was rented at Charles and King in Kitchener, where I was treated perfectly, just like a paying customer should be. They were polite and not obnoxious in anyway and everything was on the up and up. We also rented 48 blankets from this location and have been trusted to return the 1/2 dozen still wrapping up some of our furniture as I write this letter. This company is also not part of the U-Haul corporate group and therefore counts on their (customers) for their income.
The other Truck # 2 was rented at Colby Drive in Waterloo. Where a women named Sherry took an instant dislike to my husband for some unknown reason, even before he spoke a word. She talk down and extremely rude to my husband and myself from the minute we walked through the front door. She had a vocabulary of a truck driver as well. The other employees in the office found her quite funny, but, we did not!! We,however, had no choice but to take the truck or we would have to change our moving plans, which was impossible at a moments notice.
This location is a corporate location and has many week day contracts that they count the weekend customers only as gravy and therefore not worthy of common courtesy as was shown to us.
Truck #2 was driven from Colby Drive in Waterloo to Moorefield, to Heritage Drive in Kitchener, to the Esso station on King and Northfield, filled to the brim. (receipt shows $48.45 spent on gas) and then returned to Colby Drive. I returned the 26 foot truck myself so as not to have my husbands appearance upset this women any further. I just wanted to return the truck, pay my bill, and get the hell out of there in case she decided to get physical as well. She proceeded to tell me that I left the blankets in the back of the truck and would charge me a cleaning fee, and she did. The blankets belonged to the Charles street location and I removed them to my car to return to them to the right store.
Then she read me the riot act for returning the truck 2 hours late and charged me an extra day rental on both the truck and the trolly. (that I accept as my fault, it is really hard to organize 14 people, 2 26 foot trucks and 3 locations without losing track of time.) She then proceeded to tell me that I left the gas 1/4 below full and would cost me an additional $63.00. Well, then I lost it, I showed her the receipt to prove I put the gas in 2 minutes before getting to their location, but she called me everything under the sun and said I either paid for it or she would just charge my credit card anyway. I proceeded to tell her that she was wrong and that I would start the truck and show her that the gas was full on the gage.
This is when she his the kill-switch on the truck. No power to it at all. No way to prove the gas being full or to check the mileage. She then proceeded to take a $200.00 deposit for repairs for the truck as she said "I don't have a magic button to push and stop the truck from working"
At this point I was a mess and decided I would let the head office know rather than take my chances of being physically abused instead of just verbally abused. The next day after we returned the 2nd truck to the Charles street location we found not only had she charged us an extra $63.00 for gas that was not necessary, but she tacked on at least 200 more km's to our bill at $.69 each costing an additional $138.00 plus taxes.
Full bill $540.75
I then proceeded to sit in my car up the street until they took the truck and rented it out to another person for the time period for which I had already paid. I then went to Swiss Chalet in Waterloo where the 14 people who helped us move were dining. I told my husband what had transpired and he called the head office where the individual said "All I can say is sorry" and then hung up on him.
Truck #1 was driven from Charles & King St. Kitchener to Moorefield, Ontario to Heritage Drive, Kitchener to Roxborough & Highland, Kitchener to Swiss Chalet Weber St. in Waterloo, to Heritage Drive in Kitchener to a Storage Unit near Breslau Ontario and back to Charles/ King Kitchener. The same two day rental of the truck applied (which it should, we had it until 10:30 the second day.) We returned the 48 blankets for which we paid a cleaning fee and they charged for the mileage we used. We put $49.99 gas in the tank ( and drove a hell of a lot further than the truck from Colby drive) Full Bill $212.00.
I have worked for car rental companies and car dealerships for years and have seen a kill-switch used, usually for theft of a vehicle or for lack of payment for a lease, but never to scam a customer. This was a first for me. Did all of the cash money I paid at Colby drive go into the U-Haul books or Sherry's pocket? Does the corporation condone and encourage their staff to scam the customers for them or is this her choice?
YOU HAVE NOW BEEN WARNED! DO NOT RENT FROM A U-HAUL THAT IS CORPORATELY OWNED!! DO NOT RENT AT COLBY DRIVE IN WATERLOO FOR SURE!! DO NOT DEAL WITH SHERRY GRUNDSTROM!!
PASS THIS E-MAIL ON TO ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS AND ENEMIES!! (I WOULD NOT PUT MY ENEMY THROUGH THE STRESS I HAVE JUST ENDURED) IF YOU HAVE BEEN SCAMMED AT THIS LOCATION ALREADY, CONTACT ME I WOULD LIKE TO PUT TOGETHER A CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST THESE PEOPLE TO KEEP OTHER CORPORATIONS FROM DOING THIS TO THE AVERAGE JOE AGAIN.
Copies of this letter will be sent to Revenue Canada for a tax audit request, All realty offices, apartment and townhouse complexes to aid anyone needing a moving truck. The local and rural newspapers and hopefully justice will be served.
