On August 17, 2002 I rented a 24 foot truck from U-haul. I had reserved the truck two days earlier. The truck that was given to me was old and in poor condition. When I asked if they had a better truck ,I was told that was the best they had ( I would hate to see there worst). The truck originally only had 1/8 tank of fuel and I was told to bring it back with at least the same amount. Not having the time to argue I took the truck and proceeded to the nearest gas station then putting 99 Litres ( $68.00 ) of fuel into it.( just to be safe not knowing what the fuel consumption would be ). Then the operation of the truck was an adventure. The radio did not work, every time you stopped with the engine running the cab filled with exaust fumes and when I had to shut the engine off it continued to run on ( Diesel ) even with the ignition key in the off position, making the oder of rich fuel even worse in the cab.

I completed my move putting 134km ($0.59/Km )on the truck and returning it to the same location started at. the truck was returned with 1/2 a tank of fuel ( I originally filled it to the 3/4 mark.) I then stated to the U-Haul rep that I should be reimbursted for part of the fuel cost and was then told they do not reimburse for fuel. I then argued that because the fuel was so low to start with that I should be given a better mileage rate or some money back for the fuel. The rep stated I should just drive the truck until the fuel gauge was back to the 1/8 mark. At $0.59/Km that was a ridiculous suggestion. He refused my request. The outlet Manager was not at work this day so I was then told to speak to him on August 19, 2002.

On August 19 I then spoke to the manager in person.I explained the situation and he told me he did not have time to speak with me and that my claim was pointless. I asked for a name and phone number of his superior, he refused to give this to me. Later that day through a 1-800 number I was put in contact with a U-Haul Route Manager. I again explained the situation and was again told they would not reimburse me and that my claim was pointless with this person being very belittleing then telling me that I did not have to rent from U-Haul and that he could care less whether or not if I ever rented from U-Haul again.
I then asked him for a name and number of his superior he also refused.

I will never rent from U-Haul again. The equipment is junk and they seem to go out of there way to rip off the customer and have no regard for customer satisfaction.

Rude Service

AUTHOR: Michael - (Canada)

POSTED: Saturday, August 07, 2004

Our move was a nighmare because the trailer my car was on was in such poor shape, my car almost bounced off it. The truck (luckily for me was new)hit a bump in the road and started bouncing, the trailer hit the same bump and started bouncing. The car on the trailer also started bouncing. I almost lost control of both truck & trailer. The wheel strap on the drivers side let go & I had to spend an hour re-positioning the car back on the trailer. The car sustained damage to the fenders. All the lights stoped working on the trailer & we stopped again to have a U-Haul mechanic repair them. We found a roadside U-Haul shop.

Once we arrived, there was no U-Haul agent to leave the truck & trailer with. He had apparently quit and no one to replace him.We were told that we had to drive another 100km out of town to another dealer to return their equipment back. When we complained ;we suggested parking it somewhere and asked if they could send someone to pick it up themselves. We were informed that if we didn't deliver the truck & trailer to them we'd be charged with theft. After loading the truck, driving for five days &3000km ,unloading the truck ; I still had to take an afternoon, and drive 100km to return their equipment. The whole expierence left a bad taste in my mouth! I was so angered by the attitude of U-Haul that I decided to take care of my damages myself rather than leave it to these jerks. No way was I going to give them my car to fix!

ITS THE CUSTOMERS FAULT!

AUTHOR: Dan - (Canada)

POSTED: Sunday, July 04, 2004

To many customers complain that u-haul trucks are broken, have losuy radio's, dont work properly, or are old. But not once do they STOP AND THINK, hey mayby these trucks are like this because other customers drive the heck out of them? its a huge deisl truck and people drive them in hilly areas like they are sports cars! and the radios get stolen, seats burnt and ripped, brakes worn out/overheated. this is a NORTH AMERICAN COMPANY they have thousands of trucks and trailers, and if every most customer treat them with little respect how can we eveen try to keep up maintaing them?

You must remember that this is a Commercial
Moving Truck. You climb into a truck and exppect it to have the same fuel efficiency as the mercedes you just stepped out of and you are bound to be dissapointed.

I am not talking about the amount that was stated on the contract to return the truck with the truck...I know you won't get a reimbursment for over filling...THANKS I CAN READ!.

I am talking about how poor the condition of the truck was and how poor the gas milage was. If renting a u-haul is suppose to save you money...that wasn't the case here! I got one km to litre of gas...

I am not sure what this would be in miles/ gallons But needless to say It cost me 370ish dollars to move a 300km trip JUST FOR GAS!! plus the 300 for the truck. And there are steps you can take to get your money back..But what they told me is that I should have stopped on the side of the highway and called the 1-800 number waited on hold for 45 mins to talk to someone.

Then they would send out a tow truck so that could have taken up to 2 hours. But it isn't like we realized the gas milage would be that bad right away ...it took at least 150km to see. And then it was midnight! It is stupid I think that the gas reciepts would tell them something.I have even called to ask what the milage would be and what to expect for gas..It is so out. But do you think they care? NOT IN THE LEAST BIT.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

i believe that if you rent something and you are responsable for refueling, you check where the gas guage is marked. and then you make them check it.(your fault) you don't read the part on the contract that says you do not get reimbursed for over filling the fuel. don't blame others because your not smart enough to read a contract. i have been guilty of not reading contracts and paying charges i did not realize i would have to pay. learn from your mistakes and don't blame others. and by the way, it says on the contract plain as day you will not be reimbursed for overfilling the fuel.
