Everyone please be aware of Uhauls refuel policy. I rented a 14 ft truck for a local move in Meridian, ID on 9/18. The fuel policy was explained to me that I must return the truck with the gas gauge between 3/4 and 7/8 or I would be charged a $30 feed plus fuel. Okay- sounded easy enough. Before returning the truck I refueled a few blocks away and was very careful to ensure the gas gauge was right where it needed to beabout $10 in gas did the trick. I dropped the truck off after hours and placed the key in the drop box.
Well on Monday I get a final receipt via email which included over $37 for a gas charge. I immediately called the local dealer and they claimed it was only filled to of a tank. I argued profusely that I returned it with the tank at 13/16 and used the gas gauge as my reference. I told the guy its not my problem if their gas gauges dont work correctly- I used the only point of reference I had. How can I help how the gas gauge may read two days later? I then called Uhaul corporate and filed a complaint. The next day I received a call from a manager name Joe who promised to look into the problem. I argued the same points that I returned the truck at 13/16 using their gas gauge. He said he would go the location, review the truck and call me in a few hours. He said the truck had only been move across the lot and he would check it out. The day ended with no call from Joe. I called a few days later and left a voicemail- no return call. I called the next day and left a message- no return call.
So Im annoyed at a couple issues: I feel that Uhaul is running a scam by charging fuel fees based on faulty and unreliable gauges. As a customer I can only rely on what the gauge says when I drop it off. Second they dropped the ball on customer service since their manager Joe has yet to call me back to address the issue further. Third how is it even legal to charge me for fuel (2 more gallons) and a $30 fee for refueling the truck when according to Joe the manager they truck was still on the lot and had not been refueled yet? Finally they claimed to have called me prior to charging the fee but they placed an incorrect and unknown to me contact number on the contract.
I know its only $37 but its a matter of principleUhaul ripped me off and Im not going away quietly until I get my money back. Its insane that with all the arguing I have done that Uhaul is not erring on the side of the customer over what they say is two gallons of gas. I understand that Uhaul does not want to lose money on fuel, but they also need to have a more reliable system that customers can count on. I returned the truck at 13/16- I did my good deed. Also from reading the accounts online it seems quite common for people to have trouble returning these trucks with the right amount of fuel. At best U Haul runs a poor operation and at worst the organization is unethical when it comes to the fuel fee- regardless I'm not going to use them ever again and will be sure to tell as many people as possible about my experience.
