I took the insurance UHAUL offers for damages and my claim for water damage to my box spring and mattress was denied! I rented a 17 foot UHAUL truck to move my household belongings on October 15th 2011. My household belongings were in a UHAUL self storage facility in London. The truck was backed up into the bay and was loaded in a dry environment. It was raining and windy during the trip to Chesley and when we arrived, opened the back of the truck, everything looked fine until we got to the box spring and mattress which was located near the cab of the truck.....they were soaked. I returned the truck to the drop off location and advised the gentlemen of the damage. Upon inspecting the back of the truck he advised me that I should put in a claim as I had insurance for these damages and he would be taking the truck off the road to be inspected. I put in my claim and was denied. The letter stated the damages were not a direct result of negligence on UHAUL or its employees.....no other explanation was given. I called UHAUL and asked why it was denied and they informed me they put a scope through the bed and saw no leaks? They blamed it on the weather. Excuse me....the weather? They informed me that due to the weather water will sometimes leak through the back door and pool creating damage. They also told me there is a sticker on the side of the truck that states not waterproof and it is also stated on my contract. I was not informed of this clause upon signing and accepting the insurance.....WHICH IS NOT LOCATED ANYWHERE IN MY CONTRACT.....and I did not see any sticker on the truck that states as such! The only item that was damaged was the box spring and mattress located up front near the cab.....my other furniture and boxes located on the bed at the rear of the truck near the back door of the truck were not damaged. I do not accept that explanation and it makes no sense to me. I took the insurance in good faith only to be denied! This set was bought from Sears a couple of years ago  was in excellent shape and as a result of the water damage the mattress cannot be used. Its garbage.Mattresses go moldy from the inside out when soaked through.

I have used UHAUL for many years for myself and to move my children to and from College and University; have moved in all types of weather from pouring rain to snow storms and I have never ever had a problem before with Water damage. I am going to appeal this decision and contact the Ministry of Consumer Services Protection Branch.....the media will also be contacted if I am not satisfied with the results. If anyone else has any suggestions please feel free to respond!
