I went into this store today to close everything out regarding my mailbox rental. I lost my job, was unable to pay the bill and had to let the box go.

I have been in this store several times to check mail. whenever there wasn't anything in the actual box, I asked the employees to check. At least 3 times this person was the female owner. each time I asked if there was mail, I was told there was not - that nothing had arrived for me.

Today, I turned in the key. The female owner takes the key and I asked if there was any mail. She goes into the back of the store, comes back out with a BAG of my mail. I could see there were at least 5 pieces of mail, and she proceeds to tell me that if I don't pay the amount due, she can't give me my own mail.

I told her that was ridiculous, and since I had asked several times before over the last few months if there was any mail, and was lied to and told NO, that now she was charging me to give it me. She told me it was ridiculous that I didn't pay my bill. Granted, I couldn't pay the bill...but I asked if any mail was being held and I was being lied to each time!

She then makes this smarta** remark and goes in the back to get the other owner (I assume her Husband) and he comes, trying to be understanding, and I explain that I have had legal documentation I've been waiting for from my attorney and that I've been being lied to each time I came in to get my mail. I had to ASK to even view what was in the bag so I could make phone calls!

A credit card I was waiting for (which I assumed I wasn't receiving because I was told there was no mail for me!) were sitting in the pile in the bag. Actually, the 2 replacements I had to call for because the store was hiding my mail.

My legal docs were there as well. I told him he could send back the rest of it but I needed these two pieces of mail.

GET THIS: He then tells he can't let me take my mail it wasn't my mail - it's their mail! I said, "Is that legal according the USPS rules on the mail of private citizens? (I'm a former Legal Asst. so I wasn't talking out of my a**!). He responded with, "I don't know." Great answer!

He then orders the b*tch to DISCOUNT my account 50% - SILLY ME - I thought they were working with me here....NOPE....

I tell him that I HAVE to take my legal docs and he then tells me that if I do, he'll have to call the POLICE!

So I say, "Oh really? What are the police going to do?"

He says, "I don't know. They'll probably take the mail."

I was so fed up with their stupidity & rather than argue and get in trouble for being a lowly customer - I threw MY/THEIR mail back at him and told them they were f***ing a**holes in front of their standing customers and walked out.

I offered to pay in full - never asked for a discount or expected special treatment. This is what I got for it.

So now, they aren't getting a dime, and my account is going to reflect a 100% discount.

I'm filing formal complaints tomorrow.

Mentally Challenged?

AUTHOR: mr rik - (USA)

Stevie- Most likely the op chose a ups "mailbox" only because the local REAL post office in their area had no vacancies, because of their superior service, and much cheaper prices-which is often the case in my area.  Or possibly they could have been led by the crooked ups store employee to believe they were "better than the REAL post office"or their mail would be "safer" - HA! The op obviously, and sadly, found out the hard way.  But is doing a good job alerting others to this scam.

And FYI when I called, the local "mailbox" scammers were charging more per month than what the REAL post office charges for a SIX MONTH lease!  A ups "store" box shows no real savings to anyone other than a stupid a*s fool.

Were you born a lonely shill, or do you just work at it?

Irene, learn to read and COMPREHEND.  And try not to twist the truth around.

- "each time I asked if there was mail, I was told there was not - that nothing had arrived for me."

LIE

If the op hadn't paid their bill for months, do you really think this sweatheart store owner would have really kept their box open for them?  How retarded can you be?

Finally addressing your last rant- What does any of this matter?  The op was simply a paying customer, it is really none of your, or the store leeches business.

STAY AWAY FROM THESE PLACES- YOU WILL GET RIPPED OFF!

Another peculiar person that wants his problems fixed at other people's time and expense.

AUTHOR: Irene - (USA)

Complainer say: "Granted, I couldn't pay the bill...but I asked if any mail was being held and I was being lied to each time!"
He hadn't paid his bill for months, yet he wanted that store to violate USPS instruction and tell tell him what was in the box?? Not even the Post Office would do that. That store could have done what the post office would do - just return all mail to sender after 30 days. That store was putting extra work into tieing up a box as a courtesy service and in hopes that they would maintain a customer. Enough was enough already!

The reason the mail was in a bag was because it was being store AWAY from the box when the rental was no longer paid. This complaint even said he still had the key to the box. If his mail was left in the box, this odd individual would have continued to come in for months and take his unpaid mail out. And he feels that was right just because he was unemployeed??

Anyone wondering why he needed a PO or mailbox service in the first place? Anyone curious why he lost his job? Anyone interested in what his legal attorney correspondence was about? Any guess that his use of langauge and behavior in public might have something to do with all these problems?

My question is: After months of being unemployeed and not paying his bill, why had he never changed the address to his place of residence??

That rik character has really twisted humor, or is one racist sick freak.

hey little miss Rik use some common sense

AUTHOR: Steve - (USA)

The OP chose to use the UPS store for SOME reason over using a PO Box, right? We were never told that reason, were we?
But the fact remains, there was some deciding factor that put the UPS Store mailbox over that of a PO Box. Maybe the OP should clarify those reasons for that CHOICE. And, FYI... The USPS PO Boxes are within 2-3 dollars per month of that UPS Store mailbox, as I have used both. A PO Box shows no real savings to anyone but a real broke a*s derilect.

Get a life. And an education. Grow up.

Little Missy Rik is very confused here.

AUTHOR: Steve - (USA)

This "Rik" must be a real juvenile idiot know nothing as these posts just demonstrate cluelessness.

You CANNOT compare a UPS Store mailbox to a USPS mailbox.

Are you really that clueless???

People use UPS Store mailboxes and other private mailbox services instead of a PO BOX for numerous reasons.

The main reason is the REAL street address.People use these as a business address.

Then, have fun trying to get your FedEx package, UPS pachage, DHL, etc.... delivered to your USPS PO BOX! It simply won't happen.

Try having the post office send or recieve a fax for you...Yeah..Ok..see how that turns out!

Or have them recieve your truck freight!

Yeah, most UPS store locations will take that oversize delivery for you.

In conclusion, "Rik", you are an idiot.

A genuine know nothing little kid.

Grow up.

Stop being stupid.

Get a job.

Shills of a feather

AUTHOR: mr rik - (USA)

Ok so what types of reading disabilities do people have to have to not be able to see that this person had PAID THEIR RENT for MONTHS yet NOT RECEIVED ANY MAIL OR SERVICE in return for THEIR MONEY?!

Then when they decided ENOUGH WAS ENOUGH, the scumsucking leach tried to use the ops mail as a bartering tool to get even MORE money out of the victim.

PATHETIC!

So does this make the person a welfare case?  It doesn't, it makes the business owner's true leech colors shine through!

Just more of this foxy news mentality thats sweeping the country.

Again for anybody that uses, or even was contemplating using one of these places, DON'T!

1. IT'S WAY OVERPRICED-JUST COMPARE TO THE REAL POST OFFICE.
2. YOU WON'T GET ALL YOUR MAIL.
3. YOU WILL ONLY GET THE MAIL THE BUSINESS OWNER AND HIS FLUNKIES WANT YOU TO GET.
4. YOUR PRIVATE MAIL WILL BE GONE THROUGH AND "LOOKED AT".
5. YOU WONT BE ABLE TO GET YOUR MAIL 24/7.
6. THERE WILL PROBABLY BE CREDIT CARD FRAUD ON YOUR ACCT.
7. YOU MOST LIKELY WILL BE SUPPORTING TERRORISM, OR AT LEAST THOSE ON HERE THAT CALL THEIR CUSTOMER A WELFARE CASE.
8. IT'S A BAD SERVICE.

Just picture yourself as the star player in a championship game.  The score is neck and neck and you've got to bring your team to victory.  Do you want the ball passed directly to you so you can make the winning play?  Or do you want the ball passed through a bunch of flunkies first that will fumble the ball?  Same concept with your mail.

Good Day!

Great rebuttal Thomas!

AUTHOR: Inspector - (USA)

So once the mail has been delivered to the address listed on the package, the contract/lien has been satisfied and the postal inspector has nothing to investigate since there has been no interference with the delivery to the listed address.

There are those that expect the world or government to provide everything for them without any personal responsibility on their part.  This is why the welfare system doesn't work properly.  There are those that sit around and complain and attack the system without personal ownership.

Hey Jim, that cannot be reported to credit or collections

AUTHOR: Steve - (USA)

For Jim-

That box rent is NOT "credit" therefore it CANNOT be reported to collections or any credit reporting agency.

Mailbox rentals at any UPS store location, or even the US Postal Service are PREPAID.

You pay ahead of time.

There is no extension of "credit" at all.

The day after the last full day of paid service, the box is supposed to be closed, and all mail is to be returned to sender as undeliverable.

There is no rip off here anyway.

Just another waste of space.

The bottom line here is that the OP has the welfare mentality that is sweeping our country.

If you don't pay, you don't get.

Its a real simple concept.

I mean really, how much of a broke a*s loser can you be not to be able to pay for mailbox rental?

He got RIPPED OFF. BOTTOM LINE

AUTHOR: mr rik - (USA)

Jimmy the shill can try to spin this all he wants, but a ripoff is still a RIPOFF!

Why didn't ya post what the UPS STORE charges for its units?

Because they ARE A MAJOR RIPOFF.

NEVER do business with a third party vendor to get YOUR MAIL.  It's just PLAIN STUPID, and you can avoid these types of ripoffs.

You should have took a close look at some of the postmarks on this mail they had been hiding from you for MONTHS.  Then it would be clear who the real scum is!

NOW the customer is having fun badmouthing this sham operation.  (and I am too!)  I bet the owner is real happy about that!

Ive stiffed many a business, do you really believe I would think twice about stiffing one of these places?  tsk tsk! Do you think ANYBODY would give a d**n over an issue with a ups "store"?

Keep on badmouthing baby!

He Needs to Pay For His Mail...Bottom Line

AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)

Even the US Postal Service charges rent for a PO Box; in California it's about $56 per year.  If the OP wanted his mail in a UPS-similar PO Box, he needs to pay for it.  Why should he get mail delivered for free to a box when even the USPS won't deliver that mail for free in their own building?  Simply put, the OP needs to pay for the mail if he wants the contents.

The other problem with the OP's response is that he assumes the mail is his, and the UPS franchise owner told him it's all his mail.  The franchisor is correct.  Under the law, the mail belongs to the UPS franchisor because the mail is delivered via USPS to the UPS, even if the mail doesn't have the franchisor's name on it.  USPS delivers to addresses, not to persons, and if UPS owns the addresses, it's their mail.  The franchisor then puts the mail in the lessee's box.  As such, the UPS may indeed hold mail if the lessee fails to pay his/her bill.

The OP should have taken the 50% discount, paid it, and walked away.  Now the owner is going to have fun reporting the outstanding bill to the credit reporting agencies.  What do you suppose will happen then?  You think not paying the final bill is showing them?  Try getting a loan in a year or two and see what happens.  At that point, it won't matter who was holding what mail.  The only thing that will matter is the OP will have credit limits cut, cheap loans not approved, a lower credit score, and it will all seem like some sort of conspiracy.

Rik, you should have at least put a picture of your feces in a UPS box.  I'm sort of disappointed given your proclivity for such.....?

Why did you sign the box agreement if you can't read??

AUTHOR: Thomas K - (USA)

I own and operate a shipping business similar to a UPS Store, but we also ship with Fedex and other carriers. We have mailbox service that is identical to the UPS Store's.

By what you said, it appears you are one of the rare individuals that not only want free service (with a lame excuse), but insist that that business breaks the law. If the local postal inspector discovered that UPS Store was accomodating customers the way you wanted to be accommodated, the inspector likely would shut the box service down at that UPS Store. The postal mail handling is under a strict 1583A contract with USPS.

Neither the UPS Store or the post office mailbox service has any 'grace' period. If you lose your job, or 'need to see if a check is there so that maybe you can pay next week', that's your problem. When a box has expired, the UPS Store and the post office can not rummage through mail or hand it to you to see if it is worth paying for. Normal people understand the liability issues, but this complaint shows complete ineptness with any elaboration on that matter.

Past due/expired postal mail contracts have two methods of handling the mail/shipments. From midnight on after the expiration date, this first method is to forward the mail for 30 days, then discard all mail after that. The second method (which I use) is to hold all mail for six months, then discard it. The latter method ties up a box for six months, but eliminates the cumbersome process of writing "Incorect Address - Return To Sender" on it, then cutting or eradicating the destination address and USPS code from every letter/parcel before return mailing. It also gives the box holder more opportunity to renew the box and/or acquire important mail that still came to that address. The complainer here is the type that would want all that mail from day 1 to day 180 for free. During that period when the box rental has expired, NO information should be given about the contents of the box. The mail has a USPS address lein and is assigned to an address only. Any name on the mail is for reference only and does not indicate legal ownership. The store has no reason to "hide mail", but rather has a legal obligation to secure it until any lein is resolved. To whine about it is demeaning and to force the issue could turn into a police matter having a person like this customer forcefully removed from the premises. Certain people like this one take advantage of the 'human care' that non-USPS employees often fail to show, but this doesn't mean they should be mocked or taken advantage of.

That particular business owner was correct in stating, "it was ridiculous that I didn't pay my bill".It's interesting how an irrational person can justify in their mind telling a business how to break contract or even law. Losing a job doesn't mean the entire country owes you special privileges, services, or should stick their necks out for you. (Who wants to wager this complainer wants free health care and the 99 week unemployment act reinstated?)

I'm waiting for a verifiable follow up regarding this complainers "formal complaint". This complainer is in store for a serious education that will stifle him into submission. He may realize it yet, but this will give him more time to properly look for a job. From the contents of his complaint, it appears he's been unemployeed for quite a while, yet still has time for blowhard nonsense here.

As for his friend 'rik', they appear they could be good buds had they met in person. Unfortunately for this complainer, however, rik is the sort of guy that hides behind his monitor and avoids dealing with people face-to-face. His accusations that suggest the owner of that UPS Store might have a 99 cent slushy machine and has a secret conspiracy with an underground fraud operation to hide mail is just pathetic. Read other comments this 'rik' has used in shipping complaints. The guy is a grade A house-bound loser that hides behind his computer monitor with childish and demented comments.

Hope to see that formal complaint follow up soon! If it doesn't show up, everyone will know why.

You were not dealing with UPS!

AUTHOR: Steve - (USA)

These UPS STORE locations are INDEPENDENTLY OWNED franchise operations.

You were not dealing with UPS.

You were dealing with an independent business owner.

Now, you say you threw your mail back in their faces?

...." I threw MY/THEIR mail back at him and told them they were f**king a**holes in front of their standing customers and walked out".....

If you had what you wanted, why didn't you just leave?

According to your statement, you had your mail in your hand!

FYI...there is no grace period on paying your mailbox rent at a UPS Store.

You have until close of business on the due date to pay.

This no grace period policy is in the rental agreement you signed

DONT do business with UPS!

AUTHOR: mr rik - (USA)

As crappy as the post office can be, they will never be as bad as ups!

You could have got a REAL po box with 24 (TWENTY-FOUR HR!) access for nothing compared to what ups charges for their crappy service!

And HOLDING YOUR MAIL HOSTAGE?!! WTF?!

You really should've called the police.

At least contact your postal inspector ASAP!

Be sure to come back with more details on this place, and names if possible.  I would even consider standing out front "picketing" and making sure to tell potential customers what they did to you.  Maybe even hand out flyers!

Something to consider, you mentioned you were waiting on legal documents, by any chance could these ups crooks have been "paid off" to keep your mail?  Lots of things happen in small towns.  Thats why I never recommend having your mail go through "middlemen".  Also alot of these ups "stores" are owned by foreigners who really don't know the law and really don't care as they are used to doing whatever they please in their countries anyways because they just throw the cops a bribe every now and then.

On the BRIGHT SIDE, because these fools kept you from getting your credit card, you cancelled your "box", instead of continuing to pay for this REALLY CRAPPY "service"!.

AND if you paid the previous bills with credit card, file a dispute ASAP! you might get your money back!
