On May 29 1998 my uncle came from Germany with cans of closed and approved non catagious food that was very expensive to buy. It was inspcted by the german health department as all foods are and contained nothing contagious as it was for consumption by me and my mother as we were both born there and have eaten it many times and never gotten sick. There were also pens and pencils they were all in gift wrappers. they opened my uncles suitcase and just put them in the trash for later consumption by them and no apology and no 30 day notice was given either as the items were stolen and they have no right to steal items that are irreplaceable and expensive they should have asked him how much the presents for me and my mom were and write him a replacement check. he came to us then traveled and left again. They just wrote me that they would send him a letter of "Notice of Seizure and Intent to Forfeit" which other words is we stole your presents according to us being able to do so for whatever made up reason we say and you cannot do anything about it. Then they said if relief is given (how if the employees have it at home or already ate whatever they stole" the owner would be given instructions on how to recover the property. what a lie that is as he never received the letter and never was able to file a petition. then i came back from germany and had my US Passport in my hand on 11/1/2005 and was asked rudely: What are you doing here? Why are you here? do you have a job? i felt like telling him well i thought then when your a citizen of the country your allowed to come back, i guess not. and what is it any of their business if you have a job or not. i thought this place was free but sure don't seem like it. was hoping i would get a check for the items that were illegally stolen by the us customs in atlanta so my uncle could be reimbursed for the money he used to carefully choose presents for us and wrap them up in gift wrapper as it was also my confirmation to come and those were the presents. instead the criminals at the atlanta airport kept my and my mom presents and don't care about how they hurt people by doing that. i could understand if it was contagious items but it wasn't.

Thanks for showing me how it is

AUTHOR: Thomas - (U.S.A.)

Thank you for showing me that you feel the US Customs had a right to throw away presents that were expensive and no compensation and that it is right for them to treat people rudely and no respect. the food was inspected by the German Health Dept not some back alley department. shows me this place is not free and no justice.

#2 Consumer Comment

I am glad he came from Germany with the food

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

It makes this easier for me.

"U.S. Department of Agriculture regulations prohibit tourists from bringing fresh, dried, and canned meats and meat products from most foreign countries. If any meat is used in preparing a product, it is prohibited. Bakery items and all cured cheeses are admissible. Imported foods are also subject to requirements of the Food and Drug Administration and may be seized upon inspection if, in the opinion of the FDA, they pose any health risk of any kind."

This is according to the US Embassy in Germany.

The food should have been sent through the Postal System.

"If you plan to send an article of food by international mail, the FDA must receive prior notice before food is imported or offered for import into the United States. The prior notice must be submitted before the food has been sent to the United States and the parcel must be accompanied by confirmation of FDA receipt of prior notice.

Among the food articles exempt from prior notice are:

Homemade goods shipped as gifts
Food contained in household goods
Food (as a gift) shipped/mailed from an individual to an individual"

Had it been shipped through the mail, you would be enjoying it now. I know the rules are retarded, but did you expect any better from our Government?

#3 Consumer Suggestion

Next Time Read Customs Import Rules

AUTHOR: Karl - (U.S.A.)

For years and years food, foodstuffs, plants, etc. have not been allowed through Customs. There is a leaflet that is readily available that tells you what you can and cannot bring into the country. Ignorance of the rules is no rip-off. Next time send your relatives the leaflet so that they don't waste money on food that will be confiscated at the customs table. I have been through Customs scores of times and have never encountered rudeness by the customs officers. Unfortunately I have encountered griping, compaining, and rudeness by passengers. A smile and friendly greeting to people who have a really busy job works wonders. Try it next time.
