I am a physician in Las Vegas, Nevada. I rented and paid for a postal box at the PARADISE Post Office at
Swenson and Tropicana, LV, NV 89132 since 1991 !!
My box rent is due (I pay yearly) in December.
I'd just returned from vacation (a nice cruise and long overdue, thanks!) and came in to pay the rent.
Getting in line I waited my turn. Two clerks were behind the counter. I happened to get a man I'd never even seen there before -- a large, overweight man of shall we say 'color'.
Going up to his counter when called, I noticed immediately an "attitude". First he stared at the fur coat I was wearing, then at the rest of my appearance. He frowned at me. When he asked the number of the box and I said "I'll write it down" (which I always do, as a COURTESY to the postal clerk, who doesn't have to remember it as they go pull up the records) -- he got an expression like thunderclouds . . . and walked away as I was talking.
After perhaps 2-3 minutes he returned and picked up the paper, still with the hateful look toward myself.
When I told him I was paying the box for a year and that it was actually due a week or more ago but I just got back from vacation . . .
He began to write my receipt. I began to write a check. He handed me the receipt and TOOK the check. NOTHING whatsoever was said about any kind of "requirements" -- i.e. that a check must be blue or green . . . whatever . . . before it would be accepted. I had always paid in CASH before -- all TEN years! -- but as I say was just back from a trip overseas.
I was about to leave when he harumphed and said "I can't take this check". I reminded him I'd had the box TEN years, AND was a local DOCTOR.
He got verbally abusive, and said the check was "bad" (due to it being a 'temporary' -- i.e. without My name and address on it). I told him that the only "bad" check was one written without funds in the account, and that mine was well covered.
He still refused. I then said: "Okay, just hold this and I'll go get the money". He replied: No, I won't do that.
However, he still held onto my check. I became very upset and left the p.o., with my (legal, by any standards . . . showing I DID PAY) receipt.
That was just before a weekend. When I came in to get my mail on Monday, the box was closed and my key did not work anymore.
It seems that Mr. IDIOT had (purposely) re-rented my box (even though I had a RECEIPT, was a ten year customer, a physician, and had expressed my definite intent and ability to pay for the box, as I had done for more than a decade).
CALLING the supervisor over, I got a "duuuuh" response. He said "I can rent you ANOTHER box".
I replied "Oh . . . then there are PLENTY of others still for rent, to whomever comes in and asks for one?" He responded "Yes" -- and I insisted he go and tell me the numbers of those.
INDEED there were five or more boxes -- yet this clerk had rented MINE out -- rather than those.
I NEEDED that same box number as I get much professional mail there.
WHOM should I complain to? I'd frankly like to see this abusive IDIOT fired. How dare anyone take out a 'personal vendetta' against a postal customer . . . and box holder here in town for all those YEARS?
IF you have suggestions or know the name of the head postal supervisor in Nevada or Vegas I'd certainly appreciate your ADVISE. Thanks so much for allowing ME to vent, Dr. B.
