Planning to move a family of 6 with a handicapped child to Florida. Tried to schedule a truck a month in advance and was told to wait 1 week before the desired date to reserve. Made the reservation and was told that I would get a phone call 24 hours in advance of the departure date on where to pick up the vehicle.

My 24 hour notice call was a reference to the fact that they did not have a truck available and were not sure when one would be available. We are now three days past the due date and have been told several times they have no idea when a truck will be available.

All the other truck rentals in the area are now booked (probably other misguided Uhaul detainees)and not sure what I will do. How is it that a company with a computer system and probably thousands of trucks on the road has no idea where there trucks are or when they will be returned?

When you try to complain to a higher authority your told to call 1-800-go uhaul. That only made me more irrate. When asked to speak to a manager I was told they were managers.

This is a total run around and I'm sure if the CEO of Uhaul had to rent a vehicle with his own company he might feel my pain. Well I hope at least one person reads this and decides to change the Uhaul reservation to another company to keep from being ripped off.

Sorry about your move, I don't think U-haul is in the business of not making money

AUTHOR: Citizen - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, December 14, 2004

Unfortunately, like stated above, U-haul works on supply and demand. First, the reservation is dependant on supply of equipment to your area and the timeliness of people bringing it back on time. If the customer does not bring back the equipment on time, the person who has the reservation can not get it. On the other side, if the person who has the equipment is forced to bring it back (maybe they waited because of rain or snow) they get irritated and make a complaint. Looking at that situation, U-haul is in a lose-lose situation. Now there are many times when (luckily) equipment shows up and the reservation can be completed.

I would also like to add that knowing a person that works for U-haul, they are not all inept and many are actually intelligent. Unfortunately, there are times when a customer meets an undesirable employee and that makes the company look bad as a whole. Also, I am guessing that companies are out to make money and most generally would not employ individuals that are out to keep them from making it (knowingly).

I am sorry that you did not get to complete your move in a timely manner, I don't think U-haul is in the business of not making money. If there was a way to have the equipment there for you (barring stupidity) they would have had it.

Good luck to you in the future.

yes the U-haul employee was wrong. But we were not there, and there may have been a reason behind it

AUTHOR: Jason - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, December 13, 2004

Thank you Dr. Clayton...

At least one person understood I wasn't slamming Steve. It was only meant as info to other people.

Lane, yes I did read the part where he was told to wait a week before. And yes the U-haul employee was wrong. But we were not there, and there may have been a reason behind it that we don't know. I'm not saying Steve is lying at all, but for the most part you only hear one side of the story on this web site.

If you have to look up inept in the dictionary you may not want to use it in a sentance. You must think that everyone else is a moron. I'm not going to look it up for everyone, because I think people are compentent enough to know what it means.

Danny I just stated a fact about other people may be waiting for help. It was not for sympathy at all. You stated that when you went online to look for a U-haul all you found is compaints. Did you even look to see if any of the other companies have complaints. I did. There is the same type of complaints for the other companies too. Fact is rental trucks no matter what the company are mechanical pieces of equipment they break down no matter how old or new they are. Any truck can break a belt, have a flat tire, or problems with the transmission. I guess we should all boycott the car companies, because our cars breakdown too.

You don't understand at all,mr uhaul

AUTHOR: Danny - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, December 10, 2004

Steve,i got to ask you, why didn't you check out uhaul online first???I needed a uhaul once, when i went on the internet to find out how much,etc... all i got were complaints people had made! Hell, people have built web pages to dog Uhaul because of situations, the main one being vehicle breakdowns. Which makes it ironic that mr uhaul here uses that one to maybe get sympathy("If it takes a long time to get someone out to you to fix the truck, just stop and think, is there someone else broke down. They could be helping them.")

They must not have ANY kind of maintenance program, or the guy that handles it must be the same guy that don't know the diff between 1 weeks reservation and 60 days.(which mr uhaul here appears to have missed).

Its a sad,sad day ,when corporations such as this one....watch the "numbers" more than they do what got them the numbers in the first place.

To Uhaul corporation :
You created a great company, don't let it become a synonym. ie: "i'm going to pick up a uhaul", then the guy goes and pays Ryder.....Uhaul could do a much better job,I know a good executive,if you're interested.

For potential Uhaul customers

AUTHOR: Dr - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, December 10, 2004

What people have to understand is that Uhaul's equipment comes and goes to various places, sometimes one way and sometimes round trip. If a renter does not return his trailer on the promised date, nothing can be done about it. It sucks, but it's a simple fact. Planning well ahead of time should prevent future problems.

Are you a moron? Just goes to show you how inept U-Haul employee's are.

AUTHOR: Lane - (U.S.A.)

This response is to OlinoJason. Are you a moron or just can't read? In Steve's post, he stated that he attempted to reserve a truck a month ahead of the date that he needed it. YOUR people told him to wait until one week prior of actually needing it to make the reservation. Why do you think you can slam Steve like that when he actually tried to reserve early and your people told him to wait until a week out? Just goes to show you how inept U-Haul employee's are. By the way, OlinoJason, just in case your not sure what inept means, here is Websters definition

1 : lacking in fitness or aptitude : UNFIT
2 : lacking sense or reason : FOOLISH
3 : not suitable to the time, place, or occasion : inappropriate often to an absurd degree
4 : generally incompetent :

#1 UPDATE Employee

I understand that you are upset with not getting the truck on time.

AUTHOR: OlinoJason - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, December 10, 2004

Three days is extremely excessive. Honestly there are times where there are no trucks in the area. One-way trucks and trailers come and go dependant on how many people are moving. If no one is moving to Florida then there are no trucks to rent out.

In fact around the time you made this complaint Florida, and California were seriously short on equipment. Also Uhaul rents trucks in order of when they made the reservation. You can reserve a truck or trailer up to sixty day in advance. So when you waited one week prior to when you need the truck everyone who had made a reservation before you gets a truck first. So next time plan ahead a little more.

The part you asked about knowing when where trucks are due the computer system is hard to answer. But I have just recently checked in a trailer 17 days late from a one-way move. Now if I counted on that trailer being returned on time, I would have a big problem on my hands. I also checked in an auto transport 30 days late. Sometimes when people move there house is not ready due to construction, or problems with closings. They then hold on to the truck for storage of their items. This at times causes them to return late. And yes the truck is a mechanical piece of equipment and they do break down. That happens with all companies no matter how old or new the truck is, just search the other companies on this web site.

For everyone plan ahead, and schedule the truck one day prior to when you need it. That way if there is any delay you already have considered it. And don't schedule yourself in such a tight time frame. Like I said earlier trucks break down, and sometimes there is no amount of preventative maintenance that can be done to stop it. If it takes a long time to get someone out to you to fix the truck, just stop and think, is there someone else broke down. They could be helping them.
