My daughter was accepted at UNC Charlotte. The admissions, billing, and financial aid staff all assured us that even though my daughter lived out of state all of her costs would be covered by her student loans and that since her father worked in state and paid state income taxes she would qualify for instate tuition. Today we found out that for the past four months all of those people had been lying to us. My daughter tried to transfer to another university and they told the university that my daughter owed almost $5,000 in back fees. These people NEVER informed us of any change in status or of any fees that were owed. They lied to us just to get her up there and scam us for money. I would run the other way from this school. Not only do they take you financially, but the school dorms are filthy and run down and the school is in the middle of the ghetto with robberies, arson, and shootings on campus almost a daily occurrence.

Not to sound harsh, but this responsibility lies on the parents to research and help make a good decision for their child. I was an out-of-state student at UNCC for four years. The state of NC is known for making it difficult to claim instate residency and the guidelines are widely available for general use. I looked it up before I came here and tried to apply all four years without it being granted. There is a nice condition in there that states that you must prove you didn't move to the state for school. It is tough to prove.
On a side note. The school is not in the middle of the ghetto and Charlotte in general is a nice and safe place to live compared to other cities.
