I have an older Yorkshire Terrier that has seen better days. One night when I was not home she began to breathe funny, so my two roommates with their first instinct took her to a near by vet. This happened to be at around 2:30-3:00 am so the only vet opened at this hour was an emergency facility located on Reseda and Hart street in the city of Reseda.
Around 3:30am I, the owner of the dog was given a call by my roommates stating what was going on with the dog. They had told me that she was having a huge problem breathing and so they took her to the vet and wanted to know if they could take x-rays. I immediately said no and told them to take the dog home and we would see a vet the following day, and it would be our vet. The dog has had many episodes such as this before, however this one was a little worse.
The following day I was told by my roommates that the vet had charged them $90 for the visit. I was shocked. I asked what they had done for there the bill to be $90. They had told me Dr. Hsu, a graveyard Dr. at the facility had checked the dogs teeth and viewed her blue tongue and insisted on an x-ray. He also had told these two girls to relay the message to their roommate (me) that I was an idiot for how I take care of my dog. After they had gotten off the phone with me, they had left and the vet had charged them $90 to touch the dogs back, teeth and call the owner an idiot.
I brought my dog to my vet in Beverly Hills on Robertson, another VCA hospital which is one I have been going to for years. The staff there helped me take care of my dog and explained to me that if I had waited a few more hours she could have been gone. Her tongue was blue signifying that she wasn't getting oxygen to her lungs and her trachea had almost collapsed. I told them the story of what had happened the night before and they explained to me how i was ripped off $90 for a false visit. They also explained to me that a rule that VCA pet hospitals carry is that when a dog is in a state such as the state mine was in they must keep them and take care of the issue or they would be leaving the dog out on the street to die. The doctor in Reseda had not done this, had not given any meds, had not given any shots, nothing and still charged $90.
I then called the vet to discuss the charges and dispute them. I first talked to a lady at the desk by the name of Angie. She was extremely nice and helpful. She took my statement and explained that her supervisor and manager were in a meeting, but they would call me as soon as they were out.
About an hour later I received a call from supervisor Lesette. I explained to her what was going on. I told her that my two roommates had brought the dog in and the doctor did not conduct an exam because he was asked not to by me after getting off the phone with my roommates. I also told her that even if her papers say he conducted an exam, my roommates, who were there stated he had not and that the owner of the dog was not present nor did she give consent for the doctor to touch the dog for an examination. He stated on the exam sheet that he had checked her teeth and that she had bronchitis. How does he assume she has bronchitis... anyway, I explained to her that he completely took advantage of two young college girls in a panic and charged them $90 after flirting with them by "humorously" calling their roommate an idiot. This was an extremely unprofessional way to act.
Lesette explained that there was nothing she could do. At this time I was a bit upset with the matter so I asked to speak with her manager. Manager Gene came onto the phone. I explained to her for the third time what was going on. The first thing she had told me was accused me of lying about what had happened to my dog and that i was making false accusations on the examination of my dog. She then told me that her doctor in whom she trusts did conducted an examination and that my vet had lied to me or I am lying about what my vet had said. Just because there was a paper written by a doctor stating that there was an examination, doesn't mean that one took place especially if she was not present.
She was extremely rude to me and the only thing she could say was no I will not wave your fee and let me put you on the phone with one of our doctors so you can discuss that the accusations you are making on the examination that took place are in fact false. I feel totally disrespected and ripped off from this vet.
I take my dog to a VCA hospital and that is where I have taken them for years. I actually go to the one in Beverly Hills on Robertson where they help me everytime and do an amazing job. They have a great staff and respectful management. I will never go back to the facility in Reseda even if it means me driving farther for an emergency. i feel that their facility did nothing for me and it was just a young doctor trying to flirt with my friends and wiggle some money out of it as well. Please be careful and beware of places like this!
