My husband received a call yesterday morning from a sales rep at Vandergriff (Ken O.) that we had been dealing with. He was upset that I had called the day before and inquired about the lowest price we could get on a car that we wanted, but I had spoken to someone other than him.

He told us on this call yesterday morning, that the pre-owned car we wanted was still there and if we wanted to, we could go get it. We agreed, and said we would sell our 2005 Toyota Camry that morning and go to the dealership immediately. My husband sold our Camry and due to being in a rush to get to the dealership, we accepted a price way below market value ($6200) to go buy the car that we wanted. My husband called Ken O. and talked to him and told him he'd meet him at the dealership in a little bit with the cash. Everything was going well. A few minutes later, my husband called  Ken again to try to get the final sales price and Ken told him he'd call him back in 10 minutes to check if the car was still in their inventory! Additionally, he got snappy with my husband and accused me of going to the dealership behind his back (I couldn't even leave work if I had wanted to because I had no car). My husband never received a call back from him. I attempted to call Ken a bunch of times with no success.

Finally, after about an hour, I decided to call the other sales rep we had spoken with. Turns out, the car we had wanted HAD BEEN SOLD THE NIGHT BEFORE even though Ken O. had called us in the morning to tell us the car was still there.

The only reason we sold my only ride to work for way below market value in a rush was because Ken O. had called us to tell us the car we wanted was still available, when in fact it had been sold the night before. Now I'm without a car and sitting on less money than we could have gotten for my Camry had we known we had to continue looking for the car we wanted.

Vandergriff had no other cars that we could buy, and as of yet has seemingly made no effort to find the same car that we were going to buy.

I will never do business with a company that employs disrespectful and angry sales reps. I will never, NEVER, attempt to do business with Vandergriff Toyota again. I will be telling as many people as I can about our experience there.

...* and learn that if you properly maintain your vehicle using quality oil and not the "iffy lube" type, you make drastically eliminate engine sludge..and any damage it can DIRECTLY cause.

Still, unrelated to the complaint Karl..

I imagine almost everyone knows about the run away Toyotas, and thanks to you, we are all aware of engine sludge.

But this complaint is regarding a common bait and switch type tactic that many dealerships use..we read about them here all the time, and it's not just Toyota dealerships either.

As a matter of fact, I hope to get a good deal on a Toyota now that they have all this bad press. I figure if the gas pedal gets stuck, I can just put it in neutral and cost to safety.

Should I get a Tundra? I am thinking of that one, they are nice trucks. I am a pretty good mechanic so I can change the oil at regular intervals to help with any engine sludge. And Karl, since I am white will I get a better interest rate? Or will they still look at my credit score?

The only one who mentioned race here..is Bill d..he called the poster a jew. And he said Indians were annoying.

This report is just another bait and switch..you know the dealer calls to tell you the car is there..and then you get there and no car. They do this all the time.

Karl, maybe you should google bill d? Can we sue him for 10 million?

*Anyone can 'Google' this- BALTIMORE SETTLEMENT CALIFORNIA TOYOTA, and read about the Class Action lawsuit that was filed against Toyota. 'Baltimore' is the last name of the main plaintiffs in that case. Mr. & Mrs. Baltimore are an African American couple.

Toyota settled the lawsuit for a little over $10 MILLION, according to a report that is available when you 'Google' that case and read all of the related articles.

Why are you putting any blame on the customer here?

They just did as the dealer told them which was come get the car, and when they did, it was not there.

Any reason they should not be upset when they sold their car quickly in order to get back to the dealer with the cash..and was told it was sold the night before? I don't think that is a good business practice at the least..and we read about dealers doing this all the time. People have better things to do then be falsely led into thinking a car is waiting for them at the dealer, only to find out is is not when they get there.

As far as bringing up race...yes Bill d..in this case that was very ignorant. What does it matter the race of someone..everyone wants the lowest price on a car they can get, unless they are a fool. So what race is considered a fool that wants to pay more?

not ignorant---just seen the difference with how certain people conduct business--again--you handled he deal wrong--you should have had your car sold before looking/buying a car---but again--i admit fault of the salesman for his mistake---your both wrong--and again--it still seems as though you and your husband keep haggling over price--they got an attitude for some reason--most people don't give an attitude for no reason----i just hope this is a lesson learned in life to you

I think you've got it all wrong buddy. No, it wasn't a matter of 2 weeks. It was Friday that we went to take a look at the car and test drive it, expressed that we wanted it and were trying to sell our car. He didn't give us a final price with TTL.

He called us Wednesday morning to tell us the car was still there (my husband was going to call him anyway to let him know we had someone interested in our car and assure that the car we wanted was there). Let me repeat this, Ken (which I found it his last name starts with E, not O) called us WEDNESDAY MORNING. Since Ken E. told my husband that the car was still there, we went and met the guy that was interested in our car, he made us a lowball offer which we accepted because we had to get to the dealership with the cash fast to buy the car.

So, to get to the point, it turns out the car we wanted was actually sold the night before. Ken E. called us Wednesday morning to tell us the car was still there, but it had in fact been sold Tuesday night. That's the whole point of this situation.

The reason we tried to get a final price from Ken E. the day of is because we found out that the dealership had lowered the price of the car the day before on their online ads.

There is absolutely no reason for Ken to have gotten snappy with my husband about anything. Yes, I made the mistake of calling on Tuesday and asking the person who answered the phone if the car was still there, they transferred me to someone who I assumed could answer my question and spoke to him, and also asked what the final TTL sales price could be since Ken hadn't given us one. Mind you, not only was Ken getting snappy about that, but was also accusing me of showing up at the dealership behind his back, which wasn't even possible since I was at work with no car.

Forgive me for sparing the details, but I didn't want to make the report intolerably long to read.

Oh, and no, we're not Jewish. You may try to assume race because of the way you THINK we handled the deal. I can only assume that you are an ignorant and, "pissed off at life" former sales rep.

ok--first off--i sold cars long ago--but to let you know--it appears you have much gap in your story and may have left some things out--for one--what is the timeline of all this??--you just say we got a call from ken o who we had been dealing with??--whenever i talked to people they were there in person to look at the car and if intrested price was negoatiated then--with this knowledge--you mention twice that you haggled over price--a couple times over a matter of days i would guess(as you did not leave an accurate timeline)--with this--i view you as a pain in the a*s to deal with--you also mention after you sold your car(that same morning out of nowhere?)-your husband now called to haggle with the price----HOW MANY TIMES ARE YOU  and your husband DISCUSSING PRICE???????--your a pain in the a*s!!!!--and then you wonder why he was getting "snappy"--you also mention you were dealing with another salesman as well--what the f*ck man????--i am sure you haggled with him over price for days to--it would not surprise me if this was a week or 2 long process--you make it seeem as though it was a matter of a day or so-------now--in terms of ken o calling you--this was standard--when people came in to talk to me and discussed price but we did not do the deal-we of course had there name and phone #--the mangers had us call people we did not make deals with to try to get them back in to do the deal(i actually felt like i was harrasing but this is a different story)--in any case i think this is what happened here--the only way to know if it was sold is to look on the lot---he probably assumed it was and told you so--an honest mistake if you ask me--now in terms of selling your car for a lower price-this is unfortanate--however--it seems like you wanteed to take your time yet you are in a rush---i think you may have handled the deal wrong--for #1--your constant price haggling--if you were interested-you could of put down a deposit of 50-100$ to save the car--but you need to establish price first!!--#2--it seems as though you expected them to hold the car for you while you were haggling with price(over ?? period of time)--#3--you could of informed them about what was going on that you needed to sell your car to get the money for the purchase(they would of held it)--but again back to #1--instead you took many times haggling with the price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!so no clear price was established therefore they could not do the deal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!--again--your a pain in the a*s to deal with-and then you wonder why the sales rep was angry and disrespectful----YOU ARE THE ONE WHO HANDLED THE DEAL WRONG--and also--if you were serious of buying this car-you would of sold your car first-then bought another car--how do you turn around and just sell a car in a matter of minutes(as you make it seem)!!!!!!--again--the only wrong of the sales person is making an honest mistake-s**t happens------------and by the way--just a little inside knowledge-but we in sales have seen the difference in how blacks do business, how asains do business-how white people do business and how spanish people do business exc exc--based on your post--it sounds to me you are jewish in which you people are not fun to deal with--now i can never say all--but it does seem to be majority--indians were pretty annoying to but that is a different story

Normally I would just say it was rude and disrespectful to tell you a vehicle was there for you that is not.  Even though an agreement over the phone will not legally require the dealer to hold the car for you, I have been reading about similar situations to this quite a bit..seems like more then coincidence.

What I think is going on, is they are just trying to "bait" customers in with false promises and commitments to sell them vehicles which they actually have no intention of selling, or, that may already be sold, in hopes they can "switch" them to a higher priced vehicle or tell them to take a hike..real nice way to treat people. This explains why they made no effort to find the same car..then there would be no "switch".

Although it caused you some financial loss by selling your other vehicle for less then you may have if you had known you had more time, and the inconvenience of being without a ride to work for the time being, you may still yet be better off then if you had purchased a vehicle from slimeballs like this.

I consider myself an ethical seller, and I will make no promises or verbal commitments to any potential buyers to hold a vehicle or merchandise for them, unless I have full intent of doing so, and they arrive with payment at the agreed appointment time. It is not that difficult to do this if you have common courtesy and business ethics. You simply explain to any other potential buyers that you have a commitment to sell this to someone else, take their phone number, and tell them you will call if the deal does not go through. If it is not the sellers policy to hold a vehicle from a verbal commitment over the phone, you need to let the potential buyer know this in order to avoid a situation such as happened to you.

Best of luck and hope you can find an ethical dealer out there, they are getting scarce. And thank you for reporting this so others can by weary.
