For anyone currently using, or are considering the broadband wireless internet services provided by Verizon Wireless, PLEASE BEWARE!!!

I've been a Verizon Wireless customer for years now. I have a couple of cell phones, and a couple of wireless broadband access cards for my laptop computers. Until recently, I was pretty satisfied with these Verizon Wireless services. My normal total monthly bills with Verizon Wireless are around ($200.00/month).

I currently have the Verizon Wireless BroadbandAccess Unlimited plan for ($59.99/month). I live in here in Southeast Florida, and typically use this service on a daily basis over the past few years according to my contract.

Last month, (12/25/07), my wife & I traveled to the Caribbean for the holidays. We decided to take one laptop computer using the Verizon aircard, (Model# PC5740), for use in the airports in Miami, FL & San Juan, PR during expected delays and/or layovers. We knew this aircard usage was "in-plan" in both places, and would be used "domestically" under the regular provisions of our contract with Verizon. Verizon allows domestic usage in the Continental USA, Alaska, Hawaii, U.S.V.I., and Puerto Rico.

If anyone else out there uses this Verizon internet system, its well-known that you must enable the "VZ Access Manager" program prior to entering the "Internet Explorer" program, eventually gaining internet access. Apparently, as I've come to learn the hard way, this "VZ Access Manager" is in fact lacking the simple capability of warning a "roaming" condition. That's right, folks!!! This was told to me this morning by the lovely reps of Verizon Wireless when I called and had to squeeze-it out of them over an hour or so of asking the same questions over & over.

Well, I must admit that I'm the unfortunate guy who had to learn the hard way that this Verizon Wireless aircard system DOES NOT have the ability to alert the user(s) when in fact it is roaming, (Domestically or Internationally). Forget about Verizon Wireless even hinting about this HUGE technical flaw when you join-up, and/or have been using this system for years!!! Verizon just wants you to think it only works for their "CDMA" signal wherever you are, and that whenever you can get data service, its unlimited for a fixed price every month. That's how they lure unsuspecting consumers into this unprecedented SCAM.... And then, WHAM, spring this shocking news on em.'

You see, it really works to their advantage when you visit some nearby foriegn country for the first time, and think there may be some chance of picking-up a weak signal from a domestic tower somewhere within 60-miles of your current "International" location. FYI: Punta Cana, DR is about 60-miles from the western coast of Puerto Rico. I mean, an uneducated consumer would think the "VZ Access Manager" will relay a Verizon signal strength pattern, so one must assume it must be a Verizon signal, right? WRONG!!! Apparently, this little critter just arbitrarily picks up just any old "CDMA" signal from any old company from any old third-world country, and then simply displays a "normal screen" with a given signal strength, WITHOUT any sort of warning that the user is in fact "roaming" at some astronomical "International" rate. That's right, folks, NO WARNINGS WHATSOEVER!!! (And Verizon admits this, but only after interrogation).

Only after falling for this tricky scam, and through extensive research, was I able to discover the inflated "International Rate" for the Dominican Republic is a whopping, ($0.02/Kbyte), for data transfer!!!

In total, my so-called "International" internet usage over a couple of hours time was clocked at (140,418 KiloBytes), which at the inflated rate, worked-out to cost a total of ($2,808.36)!!! Yes folks, that's right, that's the SCREW-JOB I got from Verizon Wireless "Unlimited BroadbandAccess" after years of loyalty and timely payments. I was so angry about this SCAM, that I literally asked Verizon Wireless reps why they just didn't charge me ($2,808,360.00) over this, because to me it seems like the same thing! Of course, they scoffed at my sarcasm, and offered some stupid reply.

I've already contacted an attorney to inquire about my rights here, as well as why a huge company like Verizon Wireless isn't being forced to put some kind of warning system on their "VZ Access Manager" software when there's inflated "International" and/or domestic charges may apply before uninformed customers unknowingly incur THOUSANDS $$$ in additional charges for a couple of hours of internet access.

Its proven that Verizon Wireless only cares about is what's written in their vanilla contract, which really has a ton of open-ended loopholes that only work in their favor. Whenever there's any complaint, they simply say, "Sorry for the inconvenience, Sir," or "You should have called us before-hand to ask about this," or "Your contract clearly states." No matter what happens, its always the customers fault, and therefore the customer must pay everything, or face 18% APR interest on the balance, huge collections fees, and/or huge legal fees.

What recourse does the consumer have? Arbitration without any penalty for Verizon, but only after the balance has been paid-off. Yes folks, that's it!!! Yet another example of Corporate America seriously sticking-it to the consumer.

Good Luck!
