The local paper,which comes out once a week in this here rural town of eastern Utah has really been getting on my nerves since moving here .It seems it should rename itself to be "The Vernal express of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints."
Anytime the mormon church makes an announcement of some new LDS revelation or another,it makes the front page,but I tend to wonder if the pope made a revelation, it wouldn't even be mentioned in this paper.(Do not refer to us as Catholics anymore.)or Fred Smith Jr. of the Jehovahs Witness gave out the most Watchtowers today.
It devotes itself shamelessly and unadbashedly to the LDS church!What about other churches in the area?Oh yeah,it announces the Catholic churches annual spaghetti dinner,yet does it announce every action the Catholic or other churches make on a weekly basis?
Another thing I notice,is how this paper incriminates arrested people before they are even tried in a court of law(but this has already been addressed) and not everyone is gung-h*o about Fred Smith Jr. about to embark on his mormon mission to the Guatahelia mountains or what he speaks of when he returns!Some of us do not know what a mission even is,and no do not send people to my home to enlighten me.
Not everyone is mormon in Vernal,Utah and some of us are glad!Why not make the paper for everyone in the community?Why not just not mention religion altogether?No I am not satan,I'm just buying the local paper to read about the community in which I live and reading I only live in this world the paper assumes I belong yet I know it is a community of diversity that never gets attention from the "only" local media.
I feel it is a rip-off to my intellect and my fifty-cents.

Everything in that area of utah (i lived there for 13 years) is devoted to the church. I hated the fact that they are allowed to interrupt public education with church time through seminary but oh well.The worst part about that area is what they are truly devoted to and that is the oilfield. They are setting the area up to be an economic wasteland for future generations. They need to bring other industries to the area there is plenty of room in the desert for a couple of factories.

I also live in Vernal, and yes alot of the paper is devoted to the LDS religion. But this is Utah, everything revolves around the LDS religion. Not unlike other states who are predominately catholic and tend to revolve around that religion.
Utah is one of the few states that will ask a churches opinion before passing a law (such as liquor laws). They don't deny any other religions from reporting their going-on's.
Vernal is predominatly LDS so that is most of what you will get. Just learn to ignore all of that if you are going to live in Utah....that is what the rest of us do.

My city has a newspaper that comes from Mexico, and if you pick up a copy you will notice that the paper usually has vile offensive front pages. I like to read about what is happening across the border since it is so near me, so I read Mexico's paper. I have learned to just turn the page and ignore the front page and go on with life.
I am certain the Vernal Express has more to it than news of the Mormon religion, so my advice to the uptight article writer is 'turn the page'
Read what is useful to you and ignore the rest. You will be a lot more at peace if you take this approach.
