We were lured into a $24.99 monthly "no contract" agreement with Vonage last year with what was suppose to only cost us $30 for adding what was known as a virtual secondary phone number to our service. As part of their promotion, they also promised there would be no connection fees as well on their no contract agreement. Right out of the gate they tried to charge a connection fee of well over $100 on the day of the installation, and instead of $30 per month, we were charged over $40 per month for service that would go out constantly, and disconnect calls on multiple occasions. When we decided to switch our service over to the company that provides our internet, I called the Vonage number provided to find out what charges would be applied, and what we should do with their phone box (which was impossible to decypher for any use whatsoever other than to give them another opportunity to charge us arbitrary fees), and was placed on hold for what seemed to be 20-30 minutes, only to be disconnected, and then back into the hold zone for another 20-30 minutes of waiting. Once I finally got through to an operator, he seemed to be very confused whenever I asked him a question, and appeared to be reading from a prepared script. I asked him what we should do with the phone box, and he said we could keep it and we wouldn't be charged for it, but we would have a $39.99 disconnection fee (which I was aware of), and that would be the sum total of disconnecting from their company. He asked me if we would like to go ahead and disconnect the virtual number right away so we wouldn't be charged any more for that, of which I agreed that he do, but he indicated that it would take 10-14 days for them to release the phone number to the company that we were switching to, and that we would have to continue our service with them until they released our number. Shortly after our conversation ended, I received an email that thanked us for keeping their service (which we had no intention of doing). To add insult to injury, we just got an email indicating that we owe them $129.38 for disconnecting from them, which was detailed with $79.99 for their device fee, a $39.99 disconnection fee, and $9.40 in taxes. When I followed the link to read their "no contract" agreement, the $39.99 disconnection fee is stated, but the device fee is an arbitrary amount that they can make any amount they wish. It doesn't allow you to return the device, but only to pay whatever amount they decide they can extort from you. This "device" is their way of making alot of extra money off of anyone who realizes just how bad their service is, and wants to get away from them. It's fraud and extortion in the very least, and we would be very interested in following through with any class action suits that are placed against this company. Consumers should be made very aware of their unscrupulous practices, and I hope the media picks up on how this company is defrauding the public.
