Hello all,

I needed to purchase some Green Dot MoneyPak reload cards. You can find them at sevral retailers.  Walgreens, CVS, and Speedway are a few retailers who carry the reload cards.  My goal was to add $2400.00 to my Green Dot Debit Card, and make a purchase the next day.  Walgreens happened to be the closest retailer to my home, and since I was walking, Walgreens seemed like a good idea.
At Walgreens, I got 4 MoneyPak reload packs.  They have a limit of $500 each.  I use the MoneyPak's all the time.  So, I get home and begin to load the MoneyPak's to my Green Dot debit card.  I had a MoneyPak that I had previously purchased from another store, so I loaded that one first.  I then loaded my first Walgreens MoneyPak to my card.  Everything was fine.  I scratched my 2nd Walgreens MoneyPak and started entering the numbers to the Green Dot website.  I finished entering the numbers and the security code, pressed enter, and I was halted by the system.  leWalgreens had implemented a policy that limits the use of MoneyPaks purchased from their stores.  You can only add one MoneyPak to a prepaid debit card in a 24hr period.  Meaning that, since I had purchased 4 of the MoneyPaks, I would not be able to access my money until TUESDAY!!!
This was completely unacceptible.  The store manager, nor the cashier, had mentioned anything about this when I was purchasing the MoneyPaks. I know this now, because when i returned to the Walgreens the next day, the store manager had the deer in headlights look on his face when I told him what had happened.  This policy was not published near the MoneyPaks or at the Cash Register.  I would simply have purchased the cards from another retailer.

Nothing Stated on Back MoneyPak

AUTHOR: dexterrules - ()

POSTED: Monday, July 29, 2013

To: Daughter of Mother...You Are Wrong!! Sorry but get your facts straight before you get so nasty to others.

I am staring at two Green Dot MoneyPak cards right now and there is nothing stated as far as limits on either of them. It states:

1) Load Cash To Money Pak - Go to the register and add any amount from $20 to $500. A service free of $4.95 will be added to your total. Keep your receipt.

2) Use it - Visit www.moneypak.com or call (800) 473-3636 to apply your money using the MoneyPak number below.

Additional writing found on back includes a few sentences about protecting your money by not giving the MoneyPak number or receipt information to others with the exception of your own accounts or partners that are listed on their website. Says Not a bank account and no refunds allowed at stores.

On the front it shows the service fee in the right top corner and in the left corner it ays Use PayPal to shop on eBay and more. Below that is the Green Dot MoneyPak logo and then it lists with check marks in front of them three benefits of the card which are:

Reload prepaid cards

Make same day payments

Add money to PayPal account

NO WHERE on the entire card does it state any daily reloading limits.

At my local Walgreen's they do not have anything listed about limits on any stands where the numerous prepaid cards are located. They did not tell me anything about a limit of one card per 24 hours and the receipt only states to wait 15 minutes before using the card to reload my account. I would have to say, in regards to only my local Walgreen's, that the staff is not trained properly. They didn't even know their own coupon policies when I tried to use a $3.00 coupon for an item that was $2.99...Good thing I have their coupon policy printed out to show them that they simply needed to change the price of the item to $3.00 and then the coupon would work. I don't blame the staff I would blame the company for not training them.

MoneyPak's webite lists the following info under FAQ's

Is there a limit on how much I can load on to my prepaid card with MoneyPak?

Yes.

Daily: $1,500 or 4 MoneyPak loads

Weekly: $3,500 or 7 MoneyPak loads

Monthly: $5,000 or 20 MoneyPak loads

Walgreens needs to educate or close down!

AUTHOR: Silly A** Retailer's - ()

POSTED: Thursday, July 04, 2013

This is very ridiculous to me! Same situation that I have experienced yesterday. A friend is out of state at a funeral and asked me to pay her rent by midnight or else her apartment complex would implement a $75 late fee. She bought 2 moneypak cards from WALGREENS and texted them to me. After I got out of class I sat in my car and added the first card with no problem, but when I put the number in for the second card I got a message saying:

  • The transaction requested exceeds the limit imposed by the retailer where you purchased the MoneyPak. We are unable to process your transaction at this time. Please try again after 24 hours.

OMW, I was pissed! It's been a long night and with 2 hrs of sleep and back up checking to see if I can process this card, I am still pissed. My friend called Walgreens and they said that GreenDot were the culprits and it had nothing to do with them (Idiots). Finally I just got off the phone with MoneyPak and they let me know that before purchasing a card from Walgreens, the CASHIER is supposed to let you know (when purchasing $500+ worth of MoneyPak cards) that there is a daily limit per their (Walgreens) policy and that after the first $500 is a 24 hour wait to reload again. Dumb Walgreens and their untrained or uninformed staff. Here is the solution to the problem: Take MoneyPak out of Walgreens!

PS - Who is going to pay the $75 late fee for my friends rent? Walgreens should!!! Considering that my friend hasn't worked in 2 months (maternity leave) since have her baby.

sorry don't believe you

AUTHOR: JuanD - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, July 03, 2013

I don't believe you bought $2000 worth of Green Dot cards in one transaction at any Walgreens.  Why?  Because our system will not allow a single transaction for this much on any prepaid, gift card, etc.  Second, the policy of all prepaid cards is posted right above where the cards are hanging, and it is your responsibility to read it.  There is no way to override the system to allow that much in one transaction, however.  Therefore your story does not ring true.

It is a Policy of Green Dot

AUTHOR: daughter of my mother - ()

POSTED: Monday, June 03, 2013

First, for any employee of any store to allow you to purchase 4 Green Dot money Paks was inconsistant with the guidelines set down by the Anti-Money Laundering Act of the Federal Government. So, for that, the store was in the wrong. However, on the back of all Green Dot, Vanilla Visa, American Express...well, for that matter any pre-paid debit card...it states quite plainly that a maximum of $500 per 24 hours can be loade or reloaded onto a card. It is not the responsibility of the employee of the store to inform you of that however it is the responsibility of the store to not allow the purchase of more than the maximum. You can't  blame the store. You can blame the individuals who use the cards for reasons not intended or consistant with the integrity of the card. Also, it says quite clearly on the Green Dot website that THEY only allow a maximum of $500. Again, it does not matter where you purchase the reload cards. Next time, before you spout off and blame people for witholding money, get your facts straight.

UP TO NO GOOD ??

AUTHOR: rock star from mars - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 21, 2012

What i was wondering is why does anyone use these cards in the 1st place? Trying to hide money? Whats wrong with a real bank account? green dot and all the other prepaid cards are going to screw you out of the money if they can.they like to hold on to it as long as possible because it is held in a real bank drawing interest.Just think how much interest world wide they make on just say 20% of the cards and if someone is using the card to hide money they don't want to rock the boat so most of the time green dot gets to keep the money. But i think that's what you get for using them in the 1st place!

Limits...

AUTHOR: Striderq - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, March 20, 2012

From www.greendot.com Cardholder agreement "...The maximum daily reload limit is $2,500, however, maximum in-store reload limits apply. ..." So Greendot tells you that different stores have different rules. Therefore, you need to ask before you buy the moneypacks to make sure that the store allows usage of the refills in the way you want to. Therefore when you assumed that Walgreens was the same as everywhere else you messed yourself up and are now complaining about something easily found on Greendot website.

ok, you're just an idiot

AUTHOR: Ferg - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, March 20, 2012

Green dot sets the limits on how much money you can load on your card.  Got that.  Read it twice.  The reseller designates how long you have to wait before you use your reload card.  Did you get that?  CVS is 15 minutes.  Speedway is 60 minutes.  They are all different. You idiot.  Walgreens is the ONLY retailer that actually set a limit on how many cards you can use in a given time frame.  That is the gripe.  PAY ATTENTION!!!!!!  If I wanted to wait to use my own money, I would have waited.  Walgreens policy is that a reload card purchased from them can only be used an hour later,  and you can only use 1 ever 24 hours.  That is not a green dot policy.

You need to pay attention and read

AUTHOR: Donna - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, March 20, 2012

You obviously have reading comprehension issues.  Once again, GREEN DOT sets the limits, not the seller.  When you buy any gift/refill/phone/etc. card at Walgreens (and I buy phone cards here often, so I do know this as fact), you get your receipt, plus an activation slip with instructions on activating your card.  Green dot receipts say to wait 60 minutes before activating, this is GREEN DOT, not Walgreens.

It's not the store's fault you're a moron.

You should pay better attention to detail

AUTHOR: Ferg - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, March 20, 2012

It actually did happen that way.  I didn't try to put $2000 on one card you moron.  I bought 4 different cards and walgreens sold them to me.  They sold them to me without telling me that the "WALGREENS" policy, not GREENDOT, "WALGREENS" policy won't let you use more than one card per 24hrs purchased from them.  If you do the exact same thing at CVS, you have no such limitation.  It is a WALGREENS policy.  In fact, if you buy the cards from CVS, you only have to wait 15 minutes before you can use each and every card you purchased.  Pay attention people.

You are wrong

AUTHOR: Donna - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, March 20, 2012

I doubt this actually happened this way.  First off, Walgreens policy does not allow for $2000 worth of refills to be purchased at one time as they have a $500 limit on gift cards in a single transaction to prevent money laundering.  On the receipt given to you it says to wait 60 minutes before activating or refilling.

It is not up to the cashier to inform you of Green Dot's policies, it is up to YOU to research before you buy.  All they do is sell the card, they are not representatives of the card company and it is not their responsibility to make sure you know what you are buying.

Limits

AUTHOR: Ashley - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, February 08, 2012

green dot and their retailers place limits on the card to prevent money laundering. The federal givernment has statutes about moving money via western union, so I would assume there are regulations in place for these types of throw away debit cards. The 2500$ limit on the cards is largely to prevent criminals from using them to launder funds.

Gotta know

AUTHOR: voiceofreason - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, February 07, 2012

not that I ever plan to use these things, but why would Green Dot, or its retailers, put any hold on the access to whatever value is on these card refills?

Is it to hinder refill thieves, or people who scan the codes on the cards hanging where customers can touch them?

Other than that, it's not making sense to me.

Anybody care to answer?

Curious

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, February 07, 2012

Why are you going after Walgreens if this is a GreenDot card?  Are you saying that Walgreens has a different policy than say CVS?  Are you saying you have done the exact same thing at CVS, that is buying 4 $500 MoneyPak cards and loading them within a few minutes?

What did GreenDot say when you contacted them?

Also, how did you get from buying 4 $500 MoneyPak cards to loosing $3600.  Not only that but according to you they actually offered to give you this magical $3,600..so why didn't you take it?  Because as far as we can tell you haven't "lost" anything yet.  You currently have $1000 available and the rest of the money is still in the form of the MoneyPak you just have to wait a few days before you can load them.

Yes, seriously...

"The thing of is that I don't need the cashier to assume anything.  I didn't assume anything, other than buying a moneypak is the same all over the world.  If you don't use the moneypaks, than you don't know anything about them.  However, if you sell them, you should be knowledgeable about the product."

You are correct. I never use the moneypaks as you stated. I do not know how it works, but I do not take a side. However, I see even more "assumption" on your part showing more and more in your reply.

"I go to speedway, buy 4 moneypaks, wait 15mins, load em' up.  No Problem.  I go to CVS, buy 5 moneypaks, wait 15mins, load em' up, No Problem."

Because others have similar policy, does that mean "every" single vendor would have similar policy? That's called "assumption."

"Someone in that store should have been able to tell me that it is a WALGREENS policy to only allow you to add one card every 24hrs."

Yes, there should. However, did you ask them about the policy? They do not need to tell you their policy unless you ask them. Just try to think if you were one of them, what would you feel when you have to work long hours with little pay? While checking out, would you keep telling different policy for a different product to every customer who comes in to buy those products?

"My money, my card." The feeling of entitlement could lead to assumption as well.

"That policy of Walgreens needs to be posted by the moneypaks and at the cashier."

I agree about this and hope that consumers would also "read" it as well.

You could file BBB and it is your business. To me, the shop is not totally at fault still.

Dangerous assumption

AUTHOR: MochaG - (United States of America)

POSTED: Monday, February 06, 2012

I could see how frustrated you are and agree with you up to a certain point. Yes, they should have some kind of written notice on the card. However, I think you assume that things would be the way  you want it to. First, the employees may or may not know the card policies because they are not there to sell only the card. Second, they may not assume that you would be the only person who use all cards at once. It is still valid for them to assume (yes, assume) that you are going to either give each card to different person or use each of them at a different time. Nevertheless, it is not their business (but it is yours) and they should not question you at all. However, you could actually ask them if you have any question. If you have asked questions and they couldn't answer or misguide you, that would be a different story.

Therefore, the problem comes from both side - the shop that does not have a clear policy and you who have assumption. I don't think it is really a rip off.

POSTED: Monday, February 06, 2012

I am well aware of the $2500.00 limit on the cards.  There was nothing on my card when i purchased the moneypaks from Walgreens.  The point is that, for some reason, walgreens has implemented a policy that is not posted in the store, and it directly affects whether or not someone would spend money with them.  Why in the world would I purchase multiple moneypaks from Walgreens if I can only add one moneypak a day.  The entire idea is ridiculous.  I've already paid, spent my own money, and then they want to tell me when I can use it.
