I wrote a check for medication that my bank did not honor.  As an honest person, I went to store manager as soon as I learned from bank about the "bad check".  They couldn't or wouldn't take payment.  Gave me a false phone number for something called Certegy that I would need to contact although they said the check would not be collected from me.  This is a new one one on me when businesses don't want payment for services rendered.  Just wonder what next?  I called a corporate office for Walgreen's and got answering machine.  Left Message.  I don't know anything more I can do.  This is crazy.  Just wonder what they are plotting to do to me.  Ronda at Richland, Mississippi.

One Strike And You're OUT

AUTHOR: Cory - (U.S.A.)

Many companies will not accept a check from you once you have written them a "hot" check. They put you on their electronic "list" so their registers will no longer accept your checks. It just makes good business sense. You state that your bank didn't "honor" your check. Which could mean either it was their fault or yours. You are probably one of the few "honest" people that attempted to make the check "good" as soon as you found out about it. It doesn't matter to Walgreens. Maybe 10% of "hot" check writers do try and make their checks good. The other 90% could care less. It's all a numbers game. It's cheaper for Walgreens to not accept checks from people on the list and lose some of their business then to try and chase after those hot checks and pay certegy their percentage. Walgreens WILL accept payment for services rendered just not with a check.

Honest?

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

Let's take out for a moment that you are an honest person.

The fact is you wrote a BAD check.  Certegy is a valid company, they are actually the ones who "guarantee" the checks for various merchants.  That means that if the check is dishonored Walgreens still gets' their money.  That is why they Walgreens didn't want you to pay them, because you don't owe them.

Now you still owe the money but it is to Certegy.  However, because it was returned you may also be subject to additional fees.  Depending on the State and exact situation you may be subject to a fee they could around $10 to 3-Times the amount of the check in addition to the original amount.  The fact that you caught it before they did means nothing.  The second the check was dishonored by the bank you are subject to these fees.

Certegy will contact you, most likely by mail based on the information on the check.  They will tell you that you had a dishonored check and the amount you need to pay including the original amount and any fees.

Keep in mind that writing a bad check is a very serious matter and it does not matter if it was an honest mistake or not.  If you do not pay what you owe they can(and often will) turn you over to your local District Attornies Check Restitution Program where you have a choice of paying or being charged with a crime.
