On March 4, 2008 at 10:50 a.m. I was ripped off by Walgreen's 2864 McCartney Rd. Youngstown, Ohio.

I purchased seven items that included a small bag of Kibbles and Bits dog chow, for my elderly dog.

The items were bagged in four separate bags. My bag of dog food was not made available to me after the purchase. I gathered the bags assuming the dog food was in the three bags but their was four bags.

The cashier placed what I thought was all the bags on the counter but she did not include the dog food. I found it strange that the cashier immediately left the area and walked over to the make-up department and was talking with another employee.

I got home and an hour later I went to feed the dog and no dog food. I called the store and they said it was on the floor behind the counter.
They said they would leave it there until it was picked up.

I consulted a Wal-Mart (sister company) employee and was told this happens and asked about consulting a Store Manager about the situation. I was in the area of the Walgreen's on nearby Market Street. Because the dog food was only $3.29 on sale and to save gas I went to a on the way Walgreen's so as not to go out of the way to get matter sorted out to save another $3.00 in gas. I asked the store manager to call the store as I had given him my receipt for verification and he said he would get me another bag.

Well I waited and he brought the bas up to the counter. He asked me to go to the counter. Then he asked me to follow him back to the dog food area. Then he asked me to go back to cash register. Then he said this price is different. Well it said sale item on the receipt and the item was on sale a few days ago when I paid for the item.

He then said he wanted the difference and I could have the dog food. I said you are an expletive. I said I paid for the item already and was ripped off. I proceeded to leave the store and made it know to the other employees, that the store manager was an expletive. I was irate from being ripped off, then asked to pay for an item I had paid for.

I did spend the other $3.00 in gas to go all the way back to get my merchandise I paid for. I also stopped and notified the local policeman in a area as he was in a squad car. I briefly explained the situation. The patrolman said he would go to the Walgreen store he was facing and would try to deter further employee misconduct.

The point of the matter of being harassed by store employees also has me addressing this matter to the BBB Also, because the practice is not discouraged by store management, middle or top managers. Otherwise, these happenstances would not occur, and there is a frequency.

I asked for a refund and will go out of my way not to shop at those two Walgreen stores.

#15 UPDATE Employee

Maybe you're expecting too much...

AUTHOR: Anonymous - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, March 13, 2009

I am an employee of a Walgreens store and I am also an avid couponer. One of the more frustrating things for me to watch is the attitude that some managers have that couponers are ripping them off by trying to get things for "free." Since they will get their money from the manufacturers, I really don't think they should have that attitude. I hope that Walgreens will do some major training of managers and assistant managers in that regard so that they will change their attitudes.

Now, Roger, as for your situation...I'm sorry the employee neglected to give you one of your bags and then walked away from the area. If there were no more customers waiting behind you to check out, the employee may have been taking that opportunity to discuss the timing of breaks or other work-related topics with the cosmetics person, or they may have been just shooting the breeze, but I'm sure the employee did not purposely keep your merchandise.

As for going to a different Walgreens to pick up the merchandise you'd paid for but hadn't gotten, I'm surprised that they were willing to work with you at all on that. I don't know how the 2nd store would get your money from the first store. Maybe there is a way that I don't know about, but each Walgreens is responsible for balancing their own books and if you left something behind at one store you should go to the same store to retreive it. It's only logical.

Finally, I am sorry to hear that you got angry and swore at the manager involved. In my life I have found that I am always more than willing to try to work with someone who treats me well and appears to be a nice, honest person who does not blame me for their problems. People who quickly become angry, swear, or blame me for a problem that I did not cause are frustrating to me, and I have a hard time wanting to help such people. You may have heard the phrase "you catch more flies with honey than vinegar." In my experience this is true. If you are nice you will get better results than if you are rude. I hope that next time you have a problem you will consider trying to stay calm and nicely arguing your case and see how it works out.

I hope this has helped you understand the situation a little better...

Next time go to Wal-MART!

AUTHOR: Whycustomersaredumb - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, February 21, 2009

The stores are not "sister companies". They are totally different places. Is it cause they both start with Wal?

And swearing only gets you the door.

Solution

AUTHOR: Peter - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, October 21, 2008

1- Make sure you have ALL of your purchases in your possession before leaving the store. A bag of dog food, no matter how small, is kind of hard to miss due to the weight of the item.

2- If you do leave something behind, GO BACK TO THE STORE FROM WHICH YOU PURCHASED IT. Another store is under no obligation to investigate your claim and give you an item for free.

Walgreens has no class

AUTHOR: Daniel - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, April 12, 2008

Even if you did not swear at the manager, you were still going to get rip off.

I worked for this company and THEY HAVE NO CLASS.

And by reporting this, you may have give this manager a raise and a promotion.

But, I am glad that you are not going to shop at Walgreens anymore. Start shopping at Wal-Mart or even CVS because they care about their customers more than Walgreen's

They were wrong !

AUTHOR: Dr. Kildare - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, April 02, 2008

Don't let these "so called posts" influence your rights as a consumer. You have every right to request your merchandise and those employees were wrong. They should be punished or this will continue to happen to others. They targeted you!

You were right to explain the ripoff and tell the police about the incident, otherwise this will go on and on and more and more items will be "put back on the shelves". The elderly are the employees best targets.

As far as swearing at the employee. It was the store manager who got called an explitive as I recall in the reading. The store manager was at fault. The store manager should have handled the situation discretely and not compound the problem by giving the customer the merchandise and then asking for the merchandise back. It was the store manager who inflamed the problem that could have been easily solved. That store manager should be fired for malhandling a problem.

These companies know the problem exists and encourage similiar problems. That's a fact. If there is a problem you either solve the problem or get rid of the problem.
Walgreen is doing neither.

You can call corporate and they will not solve that problem. And the one rebuttle is right they are not sisters, they are brother companies as this is sterotyped corporate problem nationally and almost all corporations can easily solve the problem but they refuse.

Swearing at employees will get you nowhere.

AUTHOR: Sweetybird68 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, April 01, 2008

While I don't think you should have had to pay more for dog food you had already paid for, you are not going to get anywhere being abusive to and swearing at employees. If you want to try to get them to cooperate with you, swearing at them will most definitely not do it. If anything, it will just piss them off and make them not want to deal with you at all.

I also agree with the previous poster who said getting the policed involved was unnecessary. They have far more important things to do, such as going after violent criminals and protecting the public.

Walgreens is not Wal-Marts Sister

AUTHOR: Patrick - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, April 01, 2008

First of all I understand your situation. The situation should of been handled differently. The manager should of called the other store and verified the information and then debited the other store for the stock. The first thing you should of done is threated to call corporate. Having once worked for the company I must say that complaints made through corporate are taken very seriously.

With that said I must comment that it was absolutely unnecessary to bring the police into the matter. I'm sure they have better things to do then patrol whether everyone gets their $3 bag of dog food. Also while the situation was not handled properly nothing illegal was done.

The last bit of information I have for you is that Walgreen's is NOT in any way affiliated with Wal-Mart so please try not to get them confused.
