Walgreens register rewards is a total rip off and a good excuse to treat their customers wrong. I had so many problems with it that I probably can not list them all:

1) Most times register rewards do not print and when you ask for it the cashiers are rude and not helpful.
2) When you try to use register rewards most often you are treated like a common criminal. Today I wanted to use few rewards and the cashier told me that I can not use them all. When I asked why she called the manager who told me I should buy exactly the number of coupons or more (which I did). When I told him that this program is a pain he told me that it is a pain for them also.
3) The rules are misleading, apparently you can only use the rewards for items that are equivalent or more expensive than the reward. i.e if you have a $5 coupon you can not use it on $4.99 items even though you do not want cash back or the total is higher than $5 with tax.
4) If you have 3 coupons you have to buy at least 3 items costing equal or more.
5) They do not let you use expired coupons even though a manager told me over the phone that I can.
6) Overall there is noone you can complain. Customer service does not answer back and managers do not even want to hear about it.
7) In general it is a horrible program. I used to LOVE Walgreens and now I do not even want to go there because of the terrible treatment I got due to coupons.

I sent 2 e-mails to Walgreens about this, never heard back. I am very upset and each time I go to Walgreens I get even more upset. I hope someone will start a class action suit. This is a total rip off!!!

#1 UPDATE Employee

Expired coupons and Catalina

AUTHOR: Bhite - (U.S.A.)

The poster above me more or less covered everything that could possibly be said. You must buy one item for each coupon, coupons cannot total more than the purchase total (before tax), and you can't redeem expired coupons. The only exception to the last one is that sometimes coupons aren't sent to the manufacturer until a week after they have been used.

So if you used a coupon on Oct. 25th, expires on Oct. 25th, the manufacturer may not receive it until Nov. 1st and will still give the company the money for the coupon. With that being said, you could use a coupon that expires on Oct. 25th on Oct. 27th, the manufacturer sends it in on Nov. 1st, and everything is fine. But this is still illegal (coupon fraud) and can result in punishment for the employee who accepts it as well as the company itself. So don't expect companies to accept them.

Also, please realize that Catalina (the company that prints these coupons) also do this with other companies, notably in my area Krogers. People have actually brought in these coupons that were printed off at Krogers and used them at Walgreens and we can accept them because the coupons are actually manufacturer coupons, not store-specific coupons. However, we generally discourage this in case the coupon can only be redeemed at a Krogers. It's a grey area for us still.

Hope this helped you.

#2 UPDATE Employee

Reguster rewards info.

AUTHOR: Wagmgr - (U.S.A.)

I'll try to respond to your complaint item by item.

1)  If a Register Reward does not print, and qualifying merchandise was purchased, there are 3 possibilities.

a) A Register Reward from the same manufacturer was used in the transaction.
b) The Catalina Printer is not working; ask (politely) to try the transaction at another register.  (happens less than 1% of the time)
c) The offer is currently not printing due to programming errors with the Catalina software; A form can be printed out that you can mail in to receive your coupon.

2) Certainly no one should treat you as a criminal.  However, there are certain stipulations on the coupons that must be followed.  One of those is the limiting of Register Reward coupons to the number of items purchased.  If you find that you are short by an item or two, just pick up a pack of gum to even it out.

3) Walgreens is not allowed to redeem the coupon for less than the stated amount on the Register Reward.

4) I covered this above.

5) At my store, I rarely (if ever) accept expired coupons.  It is an illegal practice, that could get both myself and the company into trouble.

6) I apologize that you were unable to talk to someone to voice your complaints about.  Certainly as a whole, Walgreens are known for exceptional customer service.  It's unfortunate that one store is not following the lead of generations of leaders before them.

7)  I do know that there have been several complaints regarding the Register Reward program.  There have also been many people who are able to use it within the limitations of the system and enjoy it wholeheartedly.  Having said that, our corporate office is always looking at ways to improve existing programs.  We recently took down our rebate program in part because of customers who did not like the program.

I hope this helps with your frustration, and I certainly hope that you are able to enjoy being a Walgreens customer once more.

Chris in Portland.
