My son bought my wife and myself two prepaid Visa debit cards at Walmart. We tried to activate them on line, but did not have the validation number that was on the receipt. We had to call the 1-800 number. After a lengthy time, we were able to talk with a person. Like the other complaint, we had to give them a huge amount of information. We were also informed that a monthly service fee of $4.95 would start being charged to the card and that this charge would start 1-11-09. In the mean time, my son called and told us that he had to pay $9.00 for each card.

This has to be the biggest ripoff I have ever seen. I can promise you this, my wife and I both work for a company that emplyees hundreds of people and we are going to make sure that each of them knows what a ripoff this is. There is a new Target being built in our community where we will start shopping instead of Walmart I can promise you that.

2 different cards

AUTHOR: Leisa - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, January 02, 2009

There are 2 different Visa cards that are offered...There is the RELOADABLE Visa Debit card that your son purchased and there is also a Visa Gift Card....Its sounds as if he should have read up on the differences between the two cards before he made his purchase.....This is not the fault of Wal-Mart....They only sold him what he asked for....it was up to him to decide which card he wanted.....There is a charge of 8.94 for the RELOADABLE Visa Debit card and only a 3 or 4 dollar charge for the Visa Gift Card....

#2 Consumer Suggestion

This is a Visa issue

AUTHOR: Cat - (U.S.A.)

These are sold everywhere and is not a issue with Walmart. You can buy them at Target as well. In fact the Visa websight gives you the stores they sell them at. Here is the list:

A.J. Wright
Abercrombie & Fitch
Barnes & Noble
Big 5 Sporting Goods
Boscov's
Dillard's
Kmart
Kohl's
Marshalls
Nordstrom
Office Max
Ross Stores
Target
T.J. Maxx
Toys R Us

Hmmmm..... I see Target on the list too, so whether or not you shop at Walmart is your own issue, but it is NOT a Walmart issue. All the fees are from Visa not Walmart. They make their money off all the fees. It is safer to have a checking account and use your debit card. No fees there unless you are bouncing your account. Use some sense here and read the requirements before using something like this and remember........you can use cash anywhere and no fees on that!

#1 Consumer Comment

I'm not seeing the ripoff...

AUTHOR: Edgeman - (U.S.A.)

The main complaints in this report are as follows:

'Like the other complaint, we had to give them a huge amount of information.'

They have to collect this information under federal law. This is not the fault of WalMart, Green Dot or GE Money Bank. Don't take my word for it:

https://www.walmartmoneycard.com/AcctMgmt/Controls/Walmart/Support/Products.aspx

>>Federal law requires us to obtain, verify and record information that identifies you when you open up a Wal-Mart MoneyCard. We will use your name, address, date of birth and other information (including Social Security Number for U.S. citizens or government-issued ID for non-U.S. citizens) for this purpose. Please see the Cardholder Agreement on this site for additional details.
Moving on...

'Like the other complaint, we had to give them a huge amount of information. We were also informed that a monthly service fee of $4.95 would start being charged to the card and that this charge would start 1-11-09.'

That monthly fee is disclosed in the cardholder agreement. You can look at your copy or use this link to view the online version.

https://www.walmartmoneycard.com/AcctMgmt/Controls/Walmart/Support/CardholderAgreement.aspx?siteid=walmart

'In the mean time, my son called and told us that he had to pay $9.00 for each card. '

Yes, the cost of the card itself is $8.94.

In short, all of these fees are disclosed before you are charged. How is this a ripoff?
