Do Not Trust Whitby Toyota

My name is Dana and I purchased a new 2010 Toyota Corolla from Whitby Toyota in 2010. The Corolla fit my needs at the time I bought the car. I was never really happy with the car. I decided I would wait until I paid down enough principle on the car for it to make financial sense to trade-in my Corolla for a vehicle I actually liked.

Gil was my sales rep at Whitby Toyota. I don’t have anything bad or good to say about Gil. Gil did what his job required him to do and that was about it.

At this point my feeling toward Whitby Toyota was neutral. They were not great but they were not awful either. How ever this would change shortly.

My Corolla came with free oil changes as part of the new car package. Every time I brought my Corolla in for a scheduled oil change at Whitby Toyota they would attempt to charge me for the oil change that was covered as part of the new car package. I would have to wait until they talked to someone and verify my oil change was covered. At the advice of my husband I always brought my paper work to prove the oil changes were covered. This happened to me every oil change without fail, even though Whitby Toyota told me they had corrected their system which was supposedly the issue (I do not believe it was). It would seem this was a tactic by Whitby Toyota to charge me for a service they new full well was covered. If you buy a new Toyota from Whitby Toyota be very careful and make sure you check your paper work. Had my husband not pointed out the oil changes were covered Whitby Toyota would have succeeded with scamming me.

The last straw was in June of 2013. I received an unsolicited call from Toyota Canada that Whitby Toyota was having a 3 day sale for their customers that included 0% financing if you traded in your currently owned Toyota product for a new Toyota product. I told the person on the phone I was not happy with my Corolla and the only Toyota product I was interested in was a Rav4. I was assured this vehicle was covered by the 0% financing.

I had my husband calculate whether it was worth trading in my 2010 Corolla, what my payments would be on a new Rav4 Etc. Through the promotion an appointment was made with Whitby Toyota to test drive the Rav4. Depending on the outcome of the test drive I planned on taking advantage of the 0% financing. At no time did Whitby Toyota state the Rav4 did not come with 0% financing. After test driving the Rav4 the sales rep Gil sat me down and started doing the calculations of what it would cost me to buy the vehicle. The amount he came up with was no where near what my husband calculated. Then I noticed Gil had charged me 1.9% financing instead of 0% which is a significant difference. Gil then proceeded to tell me the Rav4 was not covered under the 0% financing. Whitby Toyota reneged on the promotion they had presented to me and refused to honour their offer. They tried blaming Toyota Canada, they tried blaming the people who had cold-called me from Toyota and they tried to blame me by saying the promotion is listed on the Toyota website. The website financing Whitby Toyota tried to use as an excuse is a promotion for anyone and was longer than 3 days. The promotion I was told about was a three day sale that pertained to their existing customers who already owned a Toyota, purchased from Whitby Toyota.

I was beyond angry after being lied to, tricked, and deceived. Whitby Toyota wasted my time. I paid to have my car detailed and washed for the trade-in, wasted my gas to drive to the dealership and made arrangements for my kids to be looked after. Whitby Toyota shrugged their shoulders with an “Oh well there is nothing we can do.” attitude. I was told “Well if you are not going to buy the car we are busy and have other customers.” It was bad enough Whitby Toyota tried to cheat me out my oil changes since purchasing my Corolla in 2010, but now they had misrepresented a promotion they called me about and wasted my time. I was irate and let Whitby Toyota know just what I thought of their underhanded promotional technique. I called my husband and told him what happened.

My husband phoned Whitby Toyota and asked to speak to a manager and was put through to a manager named Gary. My husband explained what had happened. He told Gary that his organization had handled the situation very poorly and he needed to do the right thing and honour their offer.  Gary agreed to investigate the situation and promised to call me back in a couple of days. My husband communicated to Gary that if the matter was not properly handled he would post the experience on the internet.

Gary did call back in a couple of days as he had told my husband. Not to honour the promotion however but to make more excuses for why they would not honour their promotion. They blamed the person at Toyota who had called me for not giving accurate information. However Gary told me they could not verify who had called me due to the high volume of calls they made to customers. Even if that was true which I am doubtful, Whitby Toyota did not correct the information when I called to book a test drive and car appraisal. Gary the manager refused to honour the promotion or make any concessions what so ever for what had transpired. Gary then sloughed me off to the sales rep Gil who he said would be calling me to follow up regarding the situation. I have not heard a word from Whitby Toyota since.

If you have your heart set on a Toyota do not buy it from Whitby Toyota.
