APD. What a company. I have delivered phone books before for a different company, and when I saw the ad for this company I kinda got excited, as there aren't many jobs to be had around here right now. What a waste of time & effort.

First, had to show up to what I was told would be a 10 min or so orientation. Lasted over an hour. Just the branch manager (Tammy Fulkinson) mumbling off & talking about random parts of the job. After this, was FINALLY able to pick a route and get paperwork & books. Picked a route by my home, proceded to go to the loading area to get my books. Well, at this point I found out instead of like last time of just delivering 1 book per house, this time had to deliver 3 different books to each home (a yellow pages, white pages, & a mini yellow pages). Ok thats cool, so more books = more money. After waiting over 1hr 15 mins. in line at the loading zone JUST to pick up some books (mind you after having to sit inside over 1 hr for their piddly little orientation) I was a little ticked. Well, my truck got loaded, and unfortunantly because of having to deliver 3 books to each house at a time, I could not fit ALL the books in my truck. Came back the next day to get the rest loaded into my truck, and this time had to wait over 1hr 45 mins in line at the loading zone. They had 4 tractor trailers loaded full of books sitting at this sites loading zone, yet they would only use 1 truck to unload from at a time, hence the horrible wait just to pick up the books.

So delivered the books, and got done Saturday afternoon about 3pm. Went to turn in the route for payment, and alas the office was not open. Ok, this one was my fault as the office hours on SATURDAY are 8:30a-1:30p. SO, I went back on Sunday. The office hours on SUNDAY were listed/told to us to be 8:30a-1:30p as well, HOWEVER upon arriving at the office at 12:30pm SUNDAY, NO ONE WAS THERE!?!?! Also, for payment to be made on Friday, routes have to be turned in by COB ON Sunday. By now you can imagine I am pretty livid. Tried calling the office number AND the Managers cell phone. NO ANSWER on either. Went back Monday morning at 10:30am, asked the manager why the site was not open Sunday and she replied "we ran out of phone books on the trucks, so my boss told me I could close early". I replied to her that I was turning in a route, came up the day before when she was supposed to be open and she wasent, so i expected to be paid Friday still, as this was not something that was my fault. She replied this could not be done as it is now Monday, blah blah blah. After about 5 minutes of going back and forth with this lady (who is supposed to be a manager), and her trying to give me every explanation as to why she couldnt pay me, I finally told her I wanted her district managers phone number & coroprate phone number. She told me they were on a wall somewhere, i told her to write them down and have them to me. She didn't. Instead, she gets all hissy, and tells me to go take my paperwork to soem other lady in the office so it can get verified. This lady was a lot nicer, and tried to cool me down while she made some verification calls on my route. While this was happening, I heard the manager laughing about me & talking shit about me to another contractor there to pick up a route. I walked out of the office I was in, told this lady I heard her, and my lawyer would slap her with a defermation lawsuit so quick she wouldnt know what was coming. To this she laughed, and I replied "I will have your job next week". She replied to me "I will have you DNR'd by next week" as I was walking away. (DNR= do not rehire). Went and stood outside while the lady in the office continued to make verification calls on my route. Finally, I get called back in, paperwork was finished, and the manager says "supposedly" she got my pay situation taken care of and I should see a check on Friday, like I should get, instead of having to wait an extra week for something not my fault. We shall see... i'm not holding my breath, because I think this lady just wants to get another laugh.

Anywho, my advice to anyone who reads this is to STAY AWAY from this company. It seems great when you start, but the bullshit piles up so quick, your gonna need a pair of rubber boots just to wade through it all. Their process is VERY SLOW, yet they expect you to be VERY FAST, as they give you a time limit on your routes.

Oh and when they hire you, they not only get all kinds of info from you, they also fingerprint you. They say they are doing this in case you dont finish your route, or dump your books somewhere and say you delivered them. They say they will take full legal action against you if you dont deliver & or return the books. Only time I have EVER had to give someone a finger print was when I was arrested, or when I have cashed some checks at banks before.

AUTHOR: S a v v a - (United States of America)

First of all, let me start off by saying I do not specifically work for the company. However, I have been a carrier for them for 4 years in a row now. You complain, first of all, about the length of orientation. In a perfect world, perhaps, the orientation would take only 10 minutes. However, depending on if the rest of the "class" has questions or even just how fast the person giving the orientation speaks, it could take longer. Actually, the first year I went to APD for work, I was told it would be 30 minutes to an hour for orientation; I don't know why you would've been told 10 minutes. APD has a very rigid set of delivery standards, lots of rules and procedures to go over.

But I digress. You complain about how long you had to wait to load your books. This is usually the fault of whoever is in front of you in the loading line. The people working the trucks can only stack the books at the edge of the truck. The carriers have to load the books, and yes, it does get frustrating and irritating when there is someone slow in front of you, but that's the way it goes. And as for the fact that it was busier the second time you went back - of course it was; everyone was busy working their routes. They don't use all the trucks at once because they have to inventory each truck separately. They can only open up another truck when 1 truck is emptied. I know this for a fact because not only am I carrier, but I also happen to know one of the guys who works the truck for them when they come through my town. Secondly, you mentioned your annoyance about not being able to fit the whole route of books in your car due to lack of space, since there are 3 books. They tell you at orientation that there will be 3 sets of books. They also say if, at any time during the orientation, you don't feel you want the job, you can walk out. Also, when you pick up your route, it states right on the front of the envelope how many of each books you will have to pick up. You didn't look at your route folder when you got it? Again, the fault lies with you and not APD.

Now, you claim you went to the office on a Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and found that they were closed. You graciously admit it was your fault - and indeed it was. Let me remind you that office hours are also covered in orientation. Sounds like you were so frustrated by the length of the orientation that you failed to pay attention to what was being said. The only thing I can see that APD did wrong here is closing the office early on Sunday and giving you a tough time over processing your pay for that week. However, you claim the one lady you spoke to wouldn't give you office numbers? The lady rightly told you, they are posted on the Wall. Again, those are covered in orientation, AND, they also put up a big poster board with all that information right on the wall for people to write down during orientation. Carriers are ENCOURAGED to write that information down. Again, it seems you were not paying attention. 1 hour orientation is actually short compared to what most jobs require. But let me guess:  you figured that since this was a short, seasonal job, they should just get you and get you out and never mind proper training or anything? It doesn't work that way.

And you threatened a defamation lawsuit? On what grounds? You sound like you were being belligerent and rude. What good is an empty threat going to do for you? Defamation how? Obviously you have no background in law, or you would know how laughable that is. As for them fingerprinting you - it's less in case you dump the books, and more because people were leaving them on or in mailboxes - a federal and quite prosecutable crime. And you finalize your complaint with the statement "Only time I have EVER had to give someone a finger print was when I was arrested..." So you've been arrested before...interesting...sounds like you have quite the temper and unresolved anger issues. I sincerely hope APD does put you on the DNR list. Stick with Labor Ready if you want something mindless that doesn't require training, or pay attention at orientation next time.

For the record - APD always comes to my town around Christmas, and I deliver the phone books for extra holiday money. My normal job is as an editor for two different publishing companies, and I also freelance from home. I graduated college cum laude with a Bachelor's in my field. So please refrain from any attempts to downgrade ME - I know what I'm talking about, I'm educated and informed, and I can speak knowledgeably on this topic!
