I was called a couple of weeks ago saying that I oweed a payday loan. I never even took out a payday loan! This individual called  me and 2 of my friends saying that I owed a loan and had to pay $ 443 now! They called themselves American Legal Services. The people that I talk to call themselves officers. This is the current scam that is going on.

Scam

AUTHOR: Lane - (United States of America)

I have reported this fraudulent activity. These callers do have thick accents. It is unfortunate that this type of activity goes on.  It is definitely a scam. I am glad that I am not the only one experiencing this harassment.

Off-shore scam artists

AUTHOR: Chrystal27 - (United States of America)

I have been getting harassed via cell phone by American Legal Services
for the last few months. I keep getting calls from a Chris Matthews (he
has a very heavy middle-eastern accent) saying I owe $425.29 for a debt I
allegedly owe to Cash Advance USA for $200.00.

I only answered the phone once to speak to Mr. Matthews and have never answered the phone to
any unknown ID callers since then. They can be threatening,
intimidating, and very rude.

The funny thing is that they stopped calling for a couple of weeks, but
then recently the same guy with the heavy accent started calling again
using a different name and is now calling from the Federal Crime
Investigations. I just continue to ignore the calls, and would not waste
any time or money on these guys because they are a bunch of scam
artists.

Consider....

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

...the said "payday loan" company may have had a lot of personal information?? So....How did they get it???.

Now..to get any personal financial/job history/references/ phone numbers/SS numbers/ bank account numbers etc and other family members information someone with said information had to submit it voluntarily..the payday loan companies can't just pull accurate personal financial information like this out of their arses or thin air.

They got the information one way or the other, but it does not conclude that the OP actually received a payday loan. Most likely, the OP was applying for payday loans online..and the information submitted voluntarily was used by scammers as a scare tactic in attempt to extort money.

Is there any need for me to mention what is requested/required information to submit when appliying for a loan??

Wrong Susan

AUTHOR: Stacey - (U.S.A.)

This is a scam and has been going on for several years now.  These people hacked into websites (according to ABC news), stole information and then call people pretending to be attorneys and police officers trying to scare them into paying monies that were not even distributed.  It is just a big scam!

FYI

AUTHOR: Susan - (USA)

There is more to this story than the original poster Lane is saying.

Even if there was an accent, they also knew not only Lane's friends names but their phone numbers.

My guess is Lane took the pay day loan, used her friends as reference and now that it has gone to collection, is saying she never did

I don't see a scam here. Someone had to have taken out a loan in your name if the collection agency knows who your friends are.

When was the last time you checked your credit report?
