I help the ADA ( livestock board) with stray horses. By law, an equine picked up as a stray must be held for seven days. If the horse is too skinny to go through the Pacific Livestock Auction, the horse must be held on private property until the end of 7 days. At that time, the horse is sold via "auction". The auction is held at the location where the horse is , in this case, our 980 acre alfalfa, farm. The woman who "found " the horse and turned him in as a stray was given the option by the livestock inspector to hold the horse at her location 7 days and then at the end of 7 days, she'd have the option to purchase for the amount the sate would owe her for the sevan days of feed. The woman insissted the horse be removed from her place. He was brought to my location.

During the holding period, the woman who found the horse requested the livestock inspector have me call her. She expressed concern that the horse would go to slaughter at this "auction". I expalined to her that unless she showed up to bid, there wouldnt really be an auction, that I would get the horse for cost of feed. I told her there was no chance the horse was going to slaughter. She informed me she had spoken with a volunteer at " Arizona Coalition For Equines", the said that the volunteer told her that " she knew all about me, and that they would be making sure the horse did NOT stay here."

The "auction" was held on 4/9/13. The woman who found the horse showed uo with the volunteer for ACE. I inquired why would they be using donated funds to bid on a horse that was in no danger of being, abused, neglected, or sent to slaughter? Why would they spend donated funds to rescue a horse that had adequate feed, water, and was at an ADA approved facility? I aslo inquired as to why hadnt the woman kept the horse, then turned it over to the rescue after the waiting period? The volunteer replied that the woman who had found the horse had growm emotionally attached. (So attached that when she was asked to keep him at her place, she refused.)

So, we began bidding against each other. I stopped at $300 due to the fact that I could use my money to actually rescue a horse that WAS IN DANGER.

I feel that the horse was purchased  out of spite over a personal issue I had with the volunteer for the rescue. I believ it is a gross mis use of donated funds to pruchase a horse in the name of rescue that was not in any danger what so ever. Watch out who you donate money to. It may be used for a personal vendetta.
