AYSL / Arizona Youth Sports Leagues in Peoria is the worst league I have ever dealt with!

A few months ago, my son came home with a flyer from his school and said he wanted to play flag football. After reviewing the flyer and visiting their website http://azyouthsportsleagues.com, I registered my son and paid $75.00 for 8 weeks of flag football.  I registered him about 8 weeks prior to the season starting to ensure he got on a team as I know some leagues fill up fast.  I also signed him up early in case the team's practices started a few weeks prior to and in preparation for the first game.  I literally got no response from anyone at AYSL or their website saying, "Welcome" or "Thank you for joining" or anything whatsoever.  After a few weeks went by I started to worry that I had been scammed by a fake organization/website, and now looking back, I wish I had.  It would have been a better experience than what I have endured due to the Peoria - AYSL staff!

After looking up the website again and calling the Peoria location several times, I finally reached Scott Arsenault who said he was the Director of the league. He confirmed my son's registration had been received and that teams were being formed.  He told me that I would be contacted shortly by the coach of the team that my son was assigned to. A couple more weeks went by and NOTHING! NO PHONE CALLS! NO EMAILS, NO TEXTS, NOTHING!

Then exactly one week prior to the league's FIRST scheduled game, I was contacted by Scott on Saturday afternoon asking about the box I had checked on the registration form regarding volunteering and coaching.  He said they had a lot of "last minute registrations" and all of a sudden had enough kids to form another team.  He asked if I would be interested in coaching.  I said "Sure of course, I would be glad to help out." But then when I asked "Whose team would I be assisting with?", he replied, "Your Team.  You would be the head coach."  Scott told me that he would send me the parent contact list for my team by the end of Saturday.  I had to send Scott an email on Sunday evening because I still had not received the parent list so he arranged for me to meet him the following morning (Monday) at 9:00 at AYSL - Peoria to get the information and practice equipment.  Scott didn't show up until 9:45 am.  Needless to say, I was late for work.

I should have known then that something was WRONG!!! If my son was registered 8-10 weeks ago and still wasn't assigned to a team yet, how is it that this is a " last minute" registration team?  Now don't get me wrong here, I greatly accepted the offer and was so excited to spend this extra time with my son. I LOVE FOOTBALL, and I LOVE my KIDS and spending time with them, so I have no complaints there. Nor do I feel like I bit off more than I could chew taking this position as head coach.  I understand football, have played many years of football and as a business owner, I have managed many different types of people.  Using my experiences and skills and applying them to coaching was not difficult.  I only wish it would have been with a much better, well equipped, more informative organization.

As a parent and coach with AYSL, these are the specific problems that I have had to contend with:

  • My son was not assigned to a team until 5 days prior to the first scheduled game.
  • The team that my son and his teammates had been assigned to had no coach.  I'm not confident that AYSL had any other options if I had declined the position.
  • We had less than a week to practice prior to the first scheduled game.
  • We were not able to pick up our team jerseys until the night before our first game.  I had to leave work early in order to make this happen due to AYSL's minimal hours of operation: Monday - Friday, 12:00 - 5:00.
  • One of our players has yet to receive his jersey and there is only 1 game left.  Scott said they didn't have his size in stock but he would special-order it and that I would have it in one week. That was six weeks ago.
  • The practice fields that we were told would be available for our team were offered to us on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 - 8:00 pm.  We originally selected Tuesdays and Thursdays.  They were extremely overcrowded to the point that other teams on the field were calling the City of Peoria Parks Department to have us removed.  After switching from Tuesdays and Thursdays per Scott to Mondays and Wednesdays 3 weeks into the season, we were told it would be far less crowded.  Each week since then, more and more new soccer, flag and tackle football teams from other leagues continue to show up creating the same overcrowding that we had previously. Currently, we are one week from the season ending and the problem still has not been resolved.
  • I specifically requested from Scott a small section of the huge park to be allocated to us for our 2 nights of practice per week as it is a disruption to our players to be continually moved around to different areas of the park week after week.  Other teams were requesting the same and Scott has yet to do so.
  • Schedules were not posted on the website until the evening prior to the first game.
  • We were scheduled to play The Saints for our first game and have since found out that The Saints don't exist in this league.  AYSL knew they didn't have a team for us to play against.  Instead of informing us, all of our players, parents and coaches showed up and we received a forfeit win.  Apparently, AYSL uses other flag football league teams to fill their game schedules because they don't have sufficient enrollment.  I wonder why?
  • One of the teams that we play against and who is from another league is also the same team that we have battled with over the location of our practices.  When it is convenient for them, they claim to be with AYSL.  However, I can quote them as saying directly to me during another conversation, "Please don't associate us with AYSL".  Again, I wonder why?
  • Most recently, our location for tomorrow's game was moved to a different field and I, as the coach, was not informed of this.  I only found out because I called AYSL today about their policy relating to weather conditions due to the rain we're expecting this weekend.  I was told that the change was posted on Facebook so I should have known about it.  I don't have a Facebook account and never will.  There are only 4 teams in this league.  A phone call or email to each coach is not too much to expect.
  • According to the new schedule for tomorrow, we are playing The Saints which is the same team we were scheduled to play for our first game when we received our forfeit win.  Hopefully this was a typo and we will be playing a team that actually exists.
  • During mid-season, I left a voicemail requesting a refund due to all of the problems within the organization.  I said that I would honor the commitment I made to coach the team but that I would not be interested in returning next year unless they resolved these issues.  They have yet to return my call.
  • Countless emails, phone calls and voicemails have gone unanswered.  Once they know who you are, they don't even answer the phone.
