The Haven Friends for Life in NC was raided on 1-27-16 and reported as the largest raid to date by the ASPCA. The ASPCA are masters at their donation campaigns. The ASPCA operates one animal shelter and it is in New York City. They are not above scrutiny for their aggressive donation campaigns that take money away in revenue from local shelters. In 2011 the State Humane Association of California filed a complaint with the California Office of the Attorney General against the ASPCA for its deceptive fund-raising practices. According to the ASPCA they collected $116.5 in revenue in 2009. In 2010, California received only$352,100, or .03% of the revenue even though they account for 13% of the national economy. The ASPCA does fund projects in other states (like the raid at the Haven) but the money they rake in from donations generated from the raid far exceeds what they will spend here. They also can get all the assets of the Haven, which is primarily the land and home of the owners to pay for the expenses of the raid. This will amount to more than everything the owners possess. I am frustrated that many of my posts disappear from national sites and sometimes only enough remains for me to be shamed for volunteering at the Haven. Even reading local news about animals results in donation pop-ups for the ASPCA. There  were some really nice facilities and perpetual improvements being made and not shown.  The media was only allowed were the ASPCA directed them to go. I bet the "tiny homes" with caged in patios at the Haven would look superior to the cages the ASPCA has the cats in now. The ASPCA chose to primarily show cages in quarantine and isolation areas before they would have been cleaned in the morning and probably late in the day.Just messy - not piles of old excrement. If the ASPCA 's "ultimate goal is to get the animals healthy and adopted", they could have assisted before the raid AND good luck getting a 13 year-old dog  (one of the poster dogs for the campaign) healthy and in a new home. The facility did 2000+ adoptions per year and 30,000 in its history and was the best last chance many animals had -- now this asset is gone. The Haven  needed and asked for assistance.  I personally know some of the animals in the ASPCA propaganda and their infirmities had nothing to do with abuse or neglect perpetuated by the Haven. When the money from this deceptive fund-raising campaign is deposited in a NY bank and if the courts allow it, the animals will be deposited in already overcrowded shelters, many will be killed as "unadoptable" (I have a figure of 85% kill rate for raids), and the area will have nowhere for thousands of animals to go when they are abandoned. The Spears are ruined, property seized, the animals die, the local community loses, and the ASPCA rakes in the cash for themselves. The ASPCA are very clever emotional manipulators with good videos and music. They are not the cure for what ails the surrounding counties here in NC or anywhere else. Go to your local shelter, volunteer and see what they do, and then write your check. The Haven could use a a good civil defense. Some videos contained outright lies.
