Do not buy renter's insurance from this company!

I bought a premium renters policy on November 20th, 2012 and to date have never received proof of coverage, even after numerous phone calls and emails requesting the documentation.

On December 8, 2012, 10 days into being in my new apartment, I came home from work to a robbery in progress, 2 men inside and 1 out.  Once the police had left I started trying to reach Assurant, to no avail.  I called and left multiple messages, tried to use the online claims form (3 times and each time got the same "fatal error" message telling me to try back later).  I finally located a phone number in Miami and called it.  The person who answered the phone was nice enough to fax me the claims form and said to fax it back and someone would be in touch right away.  Well I did that and finally my claim was given to a claims rep.  From the get go she did not return my calls or respond to my emails, even though I repeatedly asked for a response.  When I finally got really upset and got the name of her manager and asked to be reassigned to a different rep he called me the next day and said we will have a chat with her and told me he wanted us to work this out and continue with the claim.  I was shocked!  We are not 2 small children who needed to make up.  I had no faith in her from the poor way she had treated me and my claim and didn't want to work with her any longer.  Oh, and after calling her boss I suddenly am turned over to Special investigations, questioning my documentation.

When the claim rep finally called I was informed that the policy I purchased didn't cover certain parts of my belongings, that I should have bought a rider to go with the policy.  When I asked what part of premium full coverage didn't cover my belongings I was met with stonewalling.  Also, no where in the online application process is there any mention of special riders to purchase.  I was then asked to submit all kinds of documentation, and photos, along with the police report.  I did so immediately only to be met with more silence.  I continued to ask why I hadn't yet received proof of coverage and got no response to this request.

I recently called the Washington State Insurance Commissioners Office and am now involved in filing a complaint against Assurant for failure to comply, lack of coverage as sold, negligence and failure to settle my claim.  The claims rep said she was holding my claim in want of more information.  I told her I can't give nor am I required to provide any more information, per my discussion with the Insurance Commissioner agent.

On June 19, 2012 I asked the claims manger in writing, via email, to cancel my account and refund my money in full.  She said I had to call the underwriters and they would have to make that decision.  I called the number she gave and left another message and have never heard a word since.  After contacting her again today via email (have done 99% of this by email so I had a paper trail) and asked why  the 2 items left on my claim (I voluntarily removed several items since she said they weren't covered and my family members replaced them for my birthday) haven't been settled and was informed once I provided more information a decision would be made.  Remember, they already have purchase receipts, police report and 7 repair estimates for 1 item (Washington state only required 1 estimate, by law).

This company is a total sham.  They hide behind the internet and ignore you and when you get mad for being treated this way they attack you.  They have no intention of paying the claim.
