I was contacted in early December 2013 by a Diana Wells (though I have since learned she also goes by the last names of Ray and Smith) from Astro-Genesis Entertainment. She described it as a new record label looking to hold talent contests that included singers, models, and dancers. The winner receiving a music video. I represent a young aspiring artist who is also a full time college student. He is always looking to showcase his talent to others.
I asked how much this would cost, as my artist has limited funds. She told me $25, which had to be sent via a "money pak". I asked her where the showcase would be located and she said Long Branch, NJ in a "mansion". I googled this and discovered it was about a 3 hour drive from our hometown. She mentioned no other fees. We agreed and paid the $25. She also sent an email with pictures of the mansion in Long Beach. It was expansive and beautiful.
A couple of weeks later, Diana phoned to ask how many guest would be accompanying the artist. I told her because of the distance, it would only be myself as his manager, his girfriend, and my husband. She at first said I, as his manager, would be free, but my husband and the girfriend would have to pay $25 each for the show and $25 each for the "after party", where food would be served. I asked if their was a hotel near by as the distance we were travelling would make returning that night difficult. She then said we could stay in the "mansion". It would cost $39 per room. We agreed.
A couple of days later, Diana called again to say that each artist had to have 6 paying guest. At $50 each, and since my artist didn't have that, I could no longer be free and would have to pay as well. She did offer to discount the after party tickets to $15 instead of $25. I told her that it was not going to be possible for my artist to get 3 more people at that amount of money and to please refund our $25 registration fee. She went on the say that her "producers" loved his music and that, just between her and me (but to make sure I share it with my artist because the producers NEVER say this), they were pretty sure they were going to choose my artist for the music video because they liked him so much. They just had to see how her performed live. She also said that a representive from Universal Records was going to be present.
When I said all that was nice, but that my artist still was unable to get 3 more guest. She told me for him to simply get "sponsors" at $5 each, and that wouldn be enough. I spoke to my artist and we agreed. No mininum amout of sponsors were ever mentioned. She even said that each sponsor would be entered into a raffle and whoever name was chosen would receive money.
She then called about a week later asking for the names of the sponsors. I emailed her the names for the "raffle" and told her he had gotten 9 people, which was $45. It was then she told me that wasn't enough. She said my artist needed enough sponsors to total the 3 additional guests needed, which would be $75. I told her that this was never told to us and that he could not come up with the additional money. She then said if he could just dend $60 that would be good enough.
She also demanded that we send the $198 via paypal for the 3 show tickets, 3 after show tickets, and the 2 rooms in the mansion. This was also when she told me that the mansion was in Atlantic City, NJ, not Long Branch as was on a previous email (she claimed it was an old flyer she sent me and that the venue had never been changed). Atlantic City is another 1 1/2 to 2 hours further south for us to travel and I wrote a pretty intense email informing her of my displeasure over this. As she would not refund our money, we sucked it up and decided to continue with the trip.
She also tried to change the $60 "sponsor money" back to $75, but we refused. She ultimately agreed bto the $60, which we paid via pay pal. Not to mention she said the show was "dressy/elegant" and we spent money on new clothes.
The night before we were supposed to leave, January 24, 2014, I still had no specific address in Atlantic City or tickets to get in the show. I called her 6 times before she answered and she said the tickets were FedEx for the following morning and that the venue was not in Ortley Beach, NJ, near Toms River and Seaside Heights. She never answered as to why the venue was no longer in Atlantic City. And were happy to be about an hous closer to home.
I loked up this new address on google maps, and though it was a nice five bedroom beach house, it was by no means a "mansion". Looking at the interior pictures, there was not even any space where a performance could be held.
We pressed on, and having already paid alot of money, not including gas, tolls, and food, we hoped for the best. Diana called around 9:30 in the morning of January 25, 2014 to say they were running late and instead of the show being at 5, it was now pushed back until 8:00 pm. When we arrived in the town, we stopped at a diner to eat and I called Diana to see if we would be able to get in out rooms to change for the show. It was 6:30 pm. She told me that her "man" had just left to go pick up an artist at the airport, but he would be back soon. If we drove to the house, we could wait outside until he returned.
We did this and at 7:15, without hearing back from Diana or seeing her "man" I phoned again. At that time, Diana told me that they were on their way and for us to go in the house and pick out our rooms, just not the master bedroom, as she would be using that room. We did so, and a few minutes later another artist and his 2 guest (not 6) arrived. By 8 pm there was 2 other performers (never the 15 she claimed were in the show) and guests. All impatiently waiting for Diana, her "man", DJ, producers, Universal Records, judges, etc to arrive. NO ONE FROM ASTRO-GENESIS EVER ARRIVED. Diana did not answer or return any calls. There was no show or after party.
We left early the next morning. I have emailed "Diana" and phoned her several times with no response. It is with that experience I'm writing this. No one, especially a young aspiring artist, should nhave to go through such a scam as this. Diana, if that is really her name, and whatever last name she is using, alsong with this so called record label and entertainment group, Astro-Genesis, should be ashamed of themselves and should refund every cent they STOLE from innocent victims dreaming of making it big in the entertainment industry. This company is a disgrace.
