My elderly father recently signed up for home phone service and didn't sign up for the long distance plan. I believe AT&T took advantage of my father's lack of English skills and disregarded his needs. One month goes by and he receives a bill for $817.79. After speaking with many reps and supervisors, they state there is nothing they can do except credit $99 for our troubles. I think its irresponsible for a company to charge someone who obliviously made a mistake and living on Social Security income of $476 a month to make them pay $800 for phone calls. One phone call was $76.....They stated over and over that they can't do anything about it.....I don't think this is right or ethical. If they didn't sign up for long distance, then disconnect or disable the option. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! My father simply cannot pay this bill!

First of all, Do you work for AT&T? Are you a laywer? 

This doesn't involve you at all. You aren't adding to the solution but adding to the problem. Its easy to hide behind the internet and make stupid comments.

Sorry, I work, I don't live close to my parents, so I couldn't take him. So you think its responsible for a company to charge $818 for 20 phone calls? If language wasn't an issue, why does Banks, government offices, utilities etc all have different languages including Spanish and Chinese etc. 

AT&T also has these REPs that spoke other languages, they easily could have got them on the phone when he was signing up. Yes, he did make those phone calls, but he won't have if he knew or understood that a 5 minute phone call would cost him $76. It wasn't like he was calling 900 numbers and running up the bill on purpose.

JUST because you use CAPS doesn't make you right. 

Please just go away as these doesn't concern you and your input is not wanted.

 Who was it that used the phone service? If it was your father then there isnt much they can do. Awful nice of you to blame ANYONE else for YOUR father using the phone. Why is it that YOU cant accept the fact that your own father made these calls? This tells me that neither YOU or YOUR FATHER read the information presented to them upon signing their contract. If you were THAT worried about it, WHY DIDNT YOU GO WITH HIM? So instead of accepting the responsability of being the english speaking individual in the family, or having your father accept the responsability of using the phone or even the responsability of BASIC READING SKILLS, you CHOSE to blame SOMEONE else for YOUR problem.

There is NO HELP FOR THIS!!!
