I was checking my email a couple days and was very baffled by what I saw these two men did to this girl. One of them being Officer Gary Griffin who has a history of abuse. I am a former high ranking police officer. A police officers job is to access a situation and decide weather someone is a threat to themselves and/or the community. If they are an arrest is appropriate. However Amanda Jo Stephens was clearly not and to make a physical arrest under the circumstances this man did is absurd and very indecent to a human being.
I do not know how the traffic was when she was crossing however a grown adult can typically tell if they should or should not cross the street. Also I read she had her head phones on and could not hear them when they asked her to stop. Seeing that she had head phones on probably should have been the first clue she could not hear them. Clearly they lacked common sense which is very scary when a police officer lacks that. I have always been very bothers that anyone can be a police officer and some of the people I had to let out on the streets to patrol really saddened me. They then grabbed her and she responded as anyone would any pulled her arm away and told them to get their hands off of her. Coming up to a citizen in such a manner they should have got their attention as gently as possible and explained the dangers in crossing on green. However I highly doubt safety was their sincere concern and think it is very negligent to use a police officers time in such a way. To then handcuff someone and push them to the ground for such a reason is ridicules as well as the fact that they transport her to jail and process her. Not only did she not deserve such a thing and was it very harsh and cruel but it is a waste of precious man power. As a police officer you never know when you will need to respond quickly to a scene or witness an assault or take a drunk driver off the road.
I was very saddened to see that this officers name was no where to be mentioned in any articles. I had to call The Austin public information line to get it. I am also saddened that no one else thought to do such a thing. By writing this Gary Griffin's name will always come up on google and he will always answer for what he did. Every personal and professional associate will know what kind of a person he is and he should eventually get what he deserves.
I googled his name after I obtained it and found that back in 2006 he was fired for beating an older disabled man. He was eventually reinstated. I have posted the article.
It is very important that people file their complaints against officers and write about them as well. I am disappointed that so many people do nothing and do not realize how much their voice matters. If you have came across Gary Griffin please file a complaint against him for whatever reason. Please also contribute to writing about him. You have the write to complain for any reason you wish. I have found two things that he has done that were very wrong and it is to be assumed that he has done many other things that were not reported. Help give this man what he deserves.
