I was a student at Aveda Chapel Hill NC and setup a meeting with Professional Development less than half way through the completion of the cosmotology program to discuss transferring to another school.

I arranged a meeting with the Aveda of Chapel Hill Professional department as well as Aveda of Chapel Hill Financial Aid prior to any transfer / withdrawal action taking place to discuss my current progress through the cosmetology program, outstanding balance owed, review of original signed contract, and to request information about transferring to another school.

The lady from Aveda Chapel Hill (financial aid) said it would take a few days to schedule the meeting since she had to speak and coordinate with accounting first.  She called me back to schedule the meeting a few days later stating that she had spoke with accounting and set a time and date for me to come sit down and discuss my current progress and next steps.

I arrived with my contract, and they were very supprised that I still had my contract in hand and even said, "Wow you actually read that".  They arrived to the meeting with a document of outlined loans and the document had my completed percentage of 49.1 of the program and we reviewed the original contract which states that a completion of 49% would entitle me to 30% tuition reimbursement and notated on the financial document (previously attached) the portions of the loan I would be refunded as well as the portion of the contractual balance that I would not be responsible for.

The whole purpose of following the above process was to ensure that I would be able to transfer without owing the original contracted amount.

Individuals representing Aveda of Chapel Hill Professional Development and Accounting were in person at this meeting and stated that I would be receiving a refund and since I was at 49.1% attendance that I should process a withdrawal that day to transfer.

I took their advice and processed my withdrawal to find out that a month later they have one of their sister companies in Ohio trying to collect a debt of approx $8000.  The individuals did not even attempt to contact me via mail, they just sent an email from a domain @nurturaveda.com that does not seem to even be part of the school.

If I knew that the school was going to pull a stunt like this I would have kept my apartment in NC and just finished school.  Now that I have spent the money to move and turned in my keys to my old apartment; it is much harder to resolve this issue.

Aveda sent an email saying "you have been approved for payment plans serviced by Asset Financial Services.  This is their 3rd party that collects the debts so it doesnt appear that Aveda is involved in these type scams that are being reported all over the nation.  Just go look and read the verbatims on their websites.

Please Help!  I would like to sue Aveda for the $8000 and the amount of the two student loans they said I would be refunded; due to the amount of course completion I completed.

Detailed Corrections Aveda Scam

AUTHOR: - ()

POSTED: Tuesday, December 20, 2016

Aveda Chapel Hill, NC has mislead a student and fraudulently taken portions of their student loans, and not standing up to their own contract.  They are billing for 100% of Tuition after informing the students they would receive a minimum of 30% tutition refunded.  They misguide their students and then send the bill.  Cases of this scam are appearing across the nation.

Please DO NOT SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS!!!

I was a student at Aveda Chapel Hill NC and setup a meeting with Administration less than half way through the completion of the cosmotology program to discuss transferring to another school.

I arranged a meeting with the Aveda of Chapel Hill Administration as well as Aveda of Chapel Hill Financial Aid prior to any transfer / withdrawal action taking place to discuss my current progress through the cosmetology program, outstanding balance that would be owed, review of original signed contract, and to request information about transferring to another school; BEFORE MAKING ANY DECISION TO WITHDRAW and TRANSFER TO ANOTHER SCHOOL.

Professional Development Leaders from Aveda Chapel Hill (financial aid) said it would take a few days to schedule the meeting since she had to speak and coordinate with accounting first.  She called me back a few days later stating that she had spoke with accounting and then scheduled a time and date for me to come sit down and discuss my current progress and next steps to transfer; with details regarding the refund I would receive.

I arrived with my contract, and they were very supprised that I still had my contract in hand and even said, "Wow you actually read that".  They arrived to the meeting with a document of outlined loans and the document had my completed percentage of 49.1 of the program.  We reviewed the original contract which states that a completion of 49% would entitle me to 30% tuition reimbursement and notated on that document the portions of the loan I would be refunded.  They also outlined  the percentage of tuition that would be refunded.

The whole purpose of setting the above mentioned meeting with Aveda was to ensure that I was reading the contraact correctly and validate that I was in fact only 49% through the program and would be able to transfer to another school; only owing them 70% of tuition.

Individuals representing Aveda of Chapel Hill Professional Development / Administration and Accounting were in person at this meeting and stated that I would be receiving a refund and since I was at 49.1% completion that I should process a withdrawal that day to prevent my attendance from reaching over 50% to transfer; and receive 30% tution refunded.  I took their advice and processed my withdrawal to find out that a month later they have one of their sister companies in Ohio trying to collect a debt of approx $8000.  Aveda of Chapel Hill did not even attempt to contact me about this; they just handed the bill over to collections.  The 3rd party sent an email from a domain @nurturaveda.com that does not seem to even be part of the school.  This is how they try and keep their name clear of collections by using a sister company.

It appears that this is a common theme and practice of the Aveda Institue across the nation.  There are many reports similar to mine and somehow they are stilll in business.  I would like to sue Aveda for the $8000 and the amount of the two student loans they said I would be refunded; since I only completed 49% of the program and my contract states that I would only owe 70% of the $25,000.
