BB&T is the worst bank I have ever dealt with.  They were quick to get me in as a customer, but omitted most of the fine print.  That is until I made a fine print mistake.  Of course I made the mistake because I am incompetent.  I mean I work, and am going through college but I must be the idiot, not the banks fault.  I was unaware that they hold a deposit made after 2pm until 6a.m the next business day, but they do give u a courtesy deposit of $100 at 12am.  It was explained to me after i got NSF, by a bank rep, that my deposit funds may not be available as scheduled, but a $100 courtesy from my deposit would be available as scheduled.  So how do i know in which situations will my deposit be available?  And how long will i have to wait?  Imagine that, the bank is doing u a favor by allowing u $100 of ur money!  Checks can go through your account at any time but they can't deposit a payroll check in a timely manner!  Then, they rearrange all debits from highest to smallest and take out all debits before credits!  You might as well throw out ur bank ledger, because u never know when they will post deposits to ur account.  Sometimes they will post it the same day, sometimes 2-3days.  it just depends on how they feel!  Flip a coin!  So if u do live from paycheck to paycheck, u will never know when they deposit ur money.  You should have the money in there according to ur ledger, the online banking also confirms the money is there, but low and behold they held ur deposit, let debits go through and now ur NSF.  It really has nothing to do will spending money u don't have in an account,  it has to do with them fudging the funds in the account to better suit their needs.  They forget that it is the customers money not theirs.  I would not recommend this bank to anyone else, and if my fees are not refunded I will be going elsewhere!

Here is why..

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

I am not in the business of depositing bad checks.

- Unfortunately there are enough people who are in that business so banks have to take precautions.

If they are afraid of giving immediate credit for deposits due to bad checks, then why do they cash checks immediately, but hold them in an account?

- Not quite sure what you are saying.  But if you are saying that they will just give you the cash for a check if you went to the teller.  I bet if you really tested this you would find that they will only "cash" the check up to the amount you have available in your account.  Thus if it comes back as bad, you didn't take out more money than the bad check would have caused.

Perhaps there is something you should look up.  It is the Federal Funds Availability Act or Reg CC.  This is the Federal Guidelines that ALL banks must follow as to when they make funds available.  Just from what you are writing here it appears as if they are following it, and it is not just depending on "how they feel".  Also, this is the same reason that no matter what bank you go to you will have the same policy.

A few other things to keep in mind.  Banks only post transactions on Banking days not Calendar days.  They do not count Saturdays, Sundays or Holidays.  So if you deposit a check after the cut-off time on Friday, the next business day would be Monday(unless that is a Holiday, then it is Tuesday).

Thank you for your concern

"That banks don't collect the money when you deposit it?  That's why it is not available immediately and you should be happy that they gave you $100 courtesy to you.  Unfortunately people deposit bad checks every day in every bank, and if they gave immediate credit for deposits then no bank would be in business because it takes several days up to a few weeks to collect funds depending on the location.  I'm sorry that this happened to you but you will get this from every bank.  How about ASKING the employees when it will be available instead of assume?  A lot of banks run on a 2 pm cut off time and it's around midnight when deposits are credited not 6 am.  I sounds like you just did not like you said, read the "fine print" (what is in bold letters on your deposit receipt and in signage in the branch). Ingnorance is never an excuse for anything...good luck with getting your fees back."

Thank you for your concern.  I understand that banks are in the business of making money.  However, they collect revenue from interest rates on loans, as well as monthly fees on accounts, ect.  Billions of dollars collected on NSF is a little excessive.  When the banks made huge financial mistakes they were bailed out by the government on the taxpayers dime.  If a taxpaying customer makes a mistake, that is a different story.  I am not in the business of depositing bad checks.  The deposit in dispute was a payroll check from a reputable business.  If they are afraid of giving immediate credit for deposits due to bad checks, then why do they cash checks immediately, but hold them in an account?  On the subject of IGNORANCE, FYI if you can't spell there is a feature that can be utilized before you post a comment.
