My employer changed HSA providers.  I called the existing HSA provider, Benefit Wallet, to notify them I was transferring my account via check (doing it electronically yields a $25 fee by them).  I called to verify the amount.  They asked whether I had any outstanding transactions (I did not). I was told the account couldn't be closed until the amount was transferred from the account.

My new HSA provider cashed the check and increased my account balance.  I contacted Benefit Wallet to inquire if there was anything I could do to close the account.  Benefit Wallet again indicated that I couldn't close the account until the funds were withdrawn from their account.  During both phone calls they never disclosed there would be a $3.25 fee or when that fee would hit the account.  All fees had previously been paid by my employer.  The day after they posted the $3.25 fee, they returned the check as NSF and charged me a $25 fee.  I called and requested a reimbursement of the NSF fee.  Days later, they responded that they declined to reimburse.  

As a result of this experience, their lack of full disclosure and transparency, their claim that they were just charging a "processing fee in accordance with your agreement with BenefitWallet", I discourage any employer or employee from using their services.  They are clearly not interested in providing transparency with their customers, even when I initiated conversation and made inquiries.  They are not interested in taking responsibility for their lack of communication and rather blame the customer so they can get their fees.
