My wife just bought a 40 in flat screen Samsung-- brought it home- took it out of the box-- and it had a crack at the bottom, above the Samsung label with spider veins that ran up the screen. Of course it did not work. She called best buy, and they said to bring it in. When she brought it in-they REFUSED TO TAKE IT BACK OR CREDIT OUR ACCOUNT. They said that the box was not damaged and we needed to contact Samsung. After several calls with rude inept managers at the best buy #321 in Niles Illinois-they still refused to take this back-   I have called customer service and have heard nothing from them. I finally called Visa and they are issuing a full credit. I will continue to let the Northshore area of Chicago know of this and to not buy from best buy as they will not provide any hint of customer service when it comes to returning a damaged TV. ALso there are many comments online describing the same rude, behavior. This must be a new taitic for them to rid themselves of damaged merchandise--that probably got damaged in house. I wonder if they train their staff to react this way as the story seems to be the same across the board. Nothing on the receipt about checking the item before leaving the store--no one tells you to open the box-- because they falsely lead you to trust them. We will only go to ABT from now on. Any smart attorney want to file a class action on these low life- inepts? --please sign me up!.

This is an unfortunate situation...

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

But I have to defend common sense. Items can be damaged anywhere along the line from somewhere in Asia, to when it makes it to your home. Which is why if you order an item and have it delivered to your home, you are requested to open and inspect it before accepting it.

Once you pay for the item, there is no reason why you could not inspect it before taking it home. You are blaming others for your mistake.

Best Buy employees are not trained how to react. They are FORCED to abide by company policy, or be fired. Most of the time when customers claim the employees were inept or rude, was simply because they did not like the policies that the employees have to abide by and enforce. A case of kill the messenger.

Now, how can Best Buy know you did not drop the set? If they trust you...then they would have to take back every cracked item that someone returns no matter what. Unfortunately there are so many cases where Best Buy takes back items and upon inspection it is discovered that the item in the box is damaged..or sometimes it is not even an item Best Buy sells. Yes, believe it or not, people try to scam large retailers. And this causes policies that unfortunately negatively effect honest customers as well.

I am not accusing you of trying to scam Best Buy,  I totally understand that you are angry at Best Buy for this, and will not shop there again, and will bad mouth them.

However you can't bring a busted up TV back to a retailer and expect a refund. It is your responsibility to inspect for physical damage before leaving a store. No one has x-ray vision, and no one can prove to Best But that you didn't accidentally drop the set after you left with it.

You are fortunate that Visa is issuing a refund, I am actually surprised they can do that. For a lesson remember to always inspect an item before leaving the store, especially something like a TV. Once you pay for it, no one can prevent you from opening the box on the spot. Once you walk out the door with it, unless it is a defect covered under warranty, it is yours if it has physical damage. Not to say on occasion exceptions are not made, but typically a retailer will not take back an item that is busted up once it leaves the premises. That is not unreasonable.

Best Buy is under pretty strict regulations and will not sell damaged goods with intent, unless it is sold as an open item, discounted, and disclosed it there is physical damage, and if it works or not. As a matter of fact, if one drop of water from a roof leak lands on a carton an item is inside of, that item goes to liquidation for pennies on the dollar, even if the item inside did not get wet.
