Purchase a new hp dv9008 notebook computer (note the 8 at the end of the model number) on 11/20/06 for $1049.00 Upon returning home I noticed that the flyer in the newspaper(dated 11/19/06) for Comp-USA had the same computer dv9000 for the same price with $200 in rebates.

So I go to Best Buy on 11/22/06 for a price match (which was described to me by the sales clerk good for 30 days - but really only 14 days for notebook computers.) The add for Comp USA has the same description as the computer I purchased but Best Buy has an 8 on the end of the model number so it is not the same computer--per the three clerks who assisted me.

I tried to explain that they were in my opinion identical and could they show me how they were not. The said the processor speed was not listed so it must be different. That's why the 8 at the end of there number. End of story no discussion. They are trained very well with this scam like they have dealt with it many many times.

I said what if I returned it and bought the Comp USA (which is next door) model. OOps since I opened the box a 15% restocking fee is charged.

Moral of the story--- do your research before you buy and I bet you will not end up at Best Buy --- I know I won't ever again.

And the Comp USA notebook comes with a free printer. Ouch!

I have to wonder if HP is in on this model numbering scam?

PS I'm copying this to MA Consumer Protection, Local TV consumer reporters, Boston Newspapers, and any other place I can find.

Read Best Buy's price match policy

AUTHOR: Danielle - (U.S.A.)

First of all, the model numbers have to be EXACTLY the same in order for Best Buy to price match. Products may have very similar features, but a different model number means different product. Usually if there is a higher model number, then it is a newer product.

Secondly, Best Buy will not price match mail in rebates, only instant rebates from competitors.

Third, if CompUsa was offering a free printer, you would not receive a free printer under the Best Buy price match policy.

My advice in the future is to fully research before you buy and to know the company's policies. Always go by what is in writing, NEVER the word of an "honest" salesman.

The info on HP model numbers

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

The model# on the computer is the base model only. Your computer may have a different model# than the one on the computer or box.

For example, the number of my HP computer is displayed as zv6000, but the actual model# of my computer is zv6130us.

This is due to what is inside the computer, although the appearance is identical.

So even if the number on the computer was identical to the one advertised, it could be a totally different computer as they stated.

Thats the way HP works. Its not the retailer.

I believe if you look at the bottom of the notebook computer the Best Buy unit has the dv9000 number.

Yes.

AUTHOR: Thomas - (U.S.A.)

Many similar* products will have different model numbers and names at different stores.
*seemingly very identical except not quite

But ya know, that '8' at the end of the dv9008 model number may have ment "No free printer!" Just a thought.

Mattresses are an excellent example in that often only the covering fabric will be different from one "model" of mattress to another similar-but-different "model" of the same brand of mattress. Different stores [chains or independants] in a trade area will carry different similar-but-different "models" of the same brand of mattress which makes comparison shopping difficult at best and price-match garantees meaningless.

I ignore those price-match garantees.

The free printer would be cool if you were to leave the store with it. There are too many complaints here about rebates. Consumer Reports seems to recommend that the buyer IGNORE any rebates in his/her purchase decision.

Not the same Laptop

AUTHOR: Tom - (U.S.A.)

Did you do a side by side comparison on the internet of both models? Also, the model number you have for the CompuUSA product is wrong. dv9000 is the series of HP notebood. For example, Best Buy has the 9008, while CompUSA has the 9005 and 9009. Which one was it?

Also, was this a manufacturer rebate or a store rebate? Stores cannot and will not ever match a rebate. Even you said the list price was the same, so where is the ripoff?

If HP issued the rebate, than your complaint is with HP for not offering the same rebate with Best Buy.

I highly doubt we are talking about the same model between both stores, as many times the manufacturer will make specific models for each store. Therefore, this eliminates the price-match policy. Blame the manufacturers for this.

Different model numbers = different computers.

AUTHOR: Peter - (U.S.A.)

Just because the two computers were "in your opinion" identical does not mean that they really are ... hence the two DIFFERENT model numbers.

No store will match the price of another unless the model numbers of both items are the SAME. By your own admission, these two computers had different model numbers, albeit by only one digit. Therefore, the two computers were DIFFERENT and the price-match policy does not apply. Case closed!
