After getting the terrifying phone call that your house is on fire, and having been in the home insurance industry...I realized that I could not do the job of recovery of salvagable belongings myself. Who turns up but Blackmon Mooring of Houston the morning following the fire, upon my return to town. Having heard their name in the industry, but having had no dealings with them personally, emotionally---from what they were telling me....i had very little choice but to sign a contract. (Which they will not give me a copy of to replace the one lost that difficult day". What was salvagable was at risk if i did not act at that very momemt, it was made clear.
I could not enter my house, no electricity, total darkness, toxic fumes, dead pets, and the refusal of anyone to assist me through any part of it to retrieve sacred belongings. My house was very full. I mean very. Too full. But they took the job and the rate per hour for compensation knowing what they were in for. I was disgusted that it took them 4 miserable days to remove my shepard/collie mix Sadie, and Wirehaired pointer Bella, MY KIDS to the outside for me to attempt to bury them. HORRIBLE TEXAS HEAT....they knew where they were, i told them, the firemen told them, i pleaded, i begged... can you imagine what their condition having passed of only inhalation, i was left to deal with. It made no difference to them.
In the process of quote doing their job....i was never able to show up at the burn out and find them there., unable to ask questions except one day, when they told me i could not under any circumstance go in. I asked about jewelry etc., i was told they would pack it, give it to me personally, but it WOULD NOT go in the trucks. Never saw or heard of that again. There was no questioning anyone. You could not get phone calls returned. One day I was really suprised that I did get a phone call, I think just to throw me off, from a "crew leader" packing at the house, trying to make sure that i knew not to emerse my glass or crystal that had been displayed because heat tends to make it fragile under certain temps. I was floored, but pleased.
That is the only call except for money that i EVER got before the issues of missing property. When that issue came up it was always me calling, never the return call that was promised on a timely basis, never any good news. Only when i asked to file a claim with their professional liability carrier, was i told "Sue Us". and here i am. They did offer a really discounted settlement that NO ONE would take, and in trying to negotiate was told by overseer Earnie Worth "see you in court".
