To the list of Writer's Rip Offs, please allow me to add a new company called Bookwhirl.com, that is so blatently, baldly a rip off that it is heartbreaking. I feel terrible for the thousands of wannabe writers who could get sucked into their tide. What they promise is so stupid that it hurts: they will "market" your book to the standard "millions" of email addresses that now come stacked onto computer disks. You get a "market" of millions for real bucks several thousand dollars. That none of these addresses are actual book buyers who have any interest in your book is evident. I feel sorry for the kind of suckers who'll end up ripped off by these people. Perry Brass, author of the IPPY Award winning novel "Carnal Sacraments."

I'm not really familiar with the company, nor i have experienced doing any business with them. But i am an avid reader of their Facebook Fan Page. It's a home of really helpful articles for authors who has the desire to market their books. What's also nice about the is it's updated on a daily basis. Maybe you guys would also want to check it out. This is in response to Mr. Perry Brass's comment about BookWhirl.com.

The service that Mr. Brass is calling a"rip-off" is likely BookWhirl.com's Opt-in E-Mail Advertisement Campaign (EAC) service, which enables authors to advertise their published works through "opt-in e-mail ads".

Granted, this particular service costs a little higher than other book-marketing programs, but it is by no means a "rip-off". In fact, it is one of the most effective ways to market books online, which is why Print-on-Demand (POD) publishers such as Xlibris and IUniverse offer a similar service. It may also be interesting to note that their fees are higher than BookWhirl.com's.

For years, thousands of authors have marketed their published works through "opt-in" e-mail marketing ads because it targets a demographic that has a realistic chance of translating into customers.

For instance, an "opt-in e-mail ad" for a book about, say, French cinema, will go directly into the mailboxes of e-mail subscribers that have indicated their interest for "movies", or books, or "literatur" in their account profiles, and have "opted in" to receive e-mail advertisements.

Now factor in the fact that an author has the option to broadcast these "e-mail ads" to up to ten million "profiled" e-mail subscribers and you'll have a good idea of the marketing potential of this program. Another good thing about "e-mail ads" is its traceability an author can check the number of "clicks" that has been generated by the ad (the "links" usually directs to the author's website and/or online bookstores).

Book marketers generally take care of the ad's graphic design, copywriting, and "launching" fees, which largely explains why this marketing program costs higher than other book marketing methods.

It's no secret that the business of marketing books through the internet is a "niche industry", characterized by a small, specific consumer base (authors) and a limited number of sellers (Print-on-Demand publishers that offer book-marketing services, such as Xlibris and IUniverse), most of which are charging high service fees (largely because the consumers have limited options).

If anything, the existence of BookWhirl.com actually benefits the "consumers" of this particular industry, because it gives them a cheaper alternative. On top of that, other book marketers may even consider lowering their prices because of the competition that BookWhirl.com brings to the table.
