Do you have any sort of written agreement with them? Making monthly payments to debt collectors is usually a bad way to pay as your payments can go down a black hole of high fees and interest. The ideal way is to settle for less at once.
Do you at least have receipts showing your account balance where it's now at $3k? If not, then you need this...otherwise they can just resell your account to another debt collector and they'll restart the collection process all over again.
