I have read many stories about C R England, and most I agree to what they have said, and a few are just a far stretch. Here is my story.

I started with a recruiter, he contacted me after an inquiry about C R England. He told me that they will bus me in, mind you, I live in Florida and they wanted me to go to Salt Lake City by bus. That alone would take close to 6 days, and I am not one to sit on a bus with 75 strangers for that long. Then he continued, telling me that they would put me up in a "hotel", for 2 weeks I would go thru their "training program", then go out with a driver trainer, come back for an upgrade, then go back out with another driver for 2 weeks, then afterwards I would be eligible for my own truck. Needless to say, I did not take the bus, but I flew in. They reimbursed me 100 dollars for the flight, which was free for me anyway, (score one for me). arriving at the "hotel" was a big surpise. In no way is this a hotel. it is more of an overcrowded prison, without the bars. They had 8 people per room, with one bathroom. Constantly moving people in and out of there. At times, they would throw down matresses on the floor because they ran out of beds.

I started my "training" that monday, 3 days of cramming for a permit test. They basiclly give you every question that is going to be on the test. Once you pass the permit test, which a few in our class DID NOT, you go into another few days of classes learning about basic operations of the trucks. Now the classroom time has ended and you go out to the real trucks. Usually 40 students trying to get time behind the wheel with 6 trucks. You do the math. They show you how... no wait.. more like TELL you how to do a straight back, a offset right back, and a parallel back. Give you a few tries then take you out of the truck for the next person. About this time, a week into training I have about 10 minutes in the truck. for the next couple of days, we go from the training course to the classroom, back to the training course, then to the classroom. Then we take our backing test, with about 35 students out of 50 that started, it takes 2 days to do it. Most pass, a few fail, and given another chance the next day. After passing, we get introduced to our on the road trainer. I was lucky had a great guy, he was patient and didnt yell (much). Other trainers, you can just tell they were assholes. For the next 3 days, we went driving. Up the interstate and back, thru industrial parks, and up in the mountains. After 3 days of driving, which amounted to about 2 hours of drive time, we take our driving test, to get our licenses. Now here is the funny part, the trainers are examiners for the state too, They just change positions with another trainer and do the examinations for each other. Kinda strange if you ask me, sorta like letting crooks watch over other crooks. But anyway, after about 2 1/2 hours behind the wheel time of training, we get our licenses. Thinking we are finished with most of everything, they have a suprise for us. 2 more days of classes, more signing away of our lives, and just more money for England. Finally, the training cooridinater comes to class and tells us who we are training with for the next 3 weeks. I get to go to Portland OR. by bus. A 12 hr ride there, I arrive and meet my trainer. He had a dedicated run, 5500 miles a week. Which makes short order of the manditory 15000 miles and 21 days. Within those 3 weeks, I learned more about trucking than the school ever taught me. I had a great trainer, and anyone should be lucky to have him as a trainer. After the 3 weeks, I go back to SLC for my upgrade. YES, another 3 days of classes and meetings to go to. At the end of all that, I find out who my CAT(career advancement training) driver will be. He was late picking me up. I found out the reason why, he is a gamblng addict. He stopped in at Wendover casinos on his way to SLC to drop off the CAT he had and to pick me up. The first 3 days werent bad with him, he seemed to really want to teach things, but once he felt comfortable with me it all started going down hill. He would urinate in bottles in the sleeper cab and then pour them out the window as I drove. He left gay porn on the bed when it was his turn to drive. OH I forgot to tell you.. he was gay. that didnt bother me. It was the gay porn, the constant drooling over other truck drivers, and his demeaner got worse. I called the CAT cooridinator to let them know of what was going on, it seemed to have fallen on deaf ears. I tried to get out of that truck as fast as I could. He was wanting to take a vacation and that was my que to get out. He dropped me off at SLC for my next upgrade. More classes and meetings. By now I knew what I was wanting to do, I wanted to drive a company truck and not lease. I talked to the person that handles that department and he told me there was no trucks available right now for company drivers and I would have to wait. I sat for a week with no income, no money, and out of patients. I flew home after a week of waiting, to change my license over from Utah to Florida. I sat at home for 4 days, when I got a call about doing a recovery for them. I agreed, went to Atlanta to pick up a truck to take it back to SLC. It was a clean truck, but had 475000 miles and after doing an oil change on it, I decided I did not want to keep it. There were shards of metal in the oil. So I drove it back to SLC, where to my suprise there were still no trucks available. So I decided to lease a truck, I picked one with about 100,000 miles on it. Little did I know, that would be the biggest mistake of my life. the first few months were good. I was making good money and driving plenty of miles. I picked up a second seat from the CAT program, which out of 5 second seats I had, one had potential and wanted to stay on my truck for a couple of months to learn all he can before leasing. They took him off my truck with a week and a half and upgraded him into his own truck. They lied to him to get him into a lease. My last second seat was the deal breaker. He was an idiot and didnt belong behind a wheel and when I told the CAT cooridinator, she told me it was my job to train him. I AM NOT A TRAINER. I WAS NOT GETTING PAID TO BE A TRAINER. So I decided to not have anymore second seats. I did good for a couple of weeks, then they changed the fuel program on us and it went all down hill from there. They took me off the fuel cap and put me on the rebate program. my checks went from 900 to 1100 a week to 150 to 200 a week(if i was lucky). In this period of time, I learned alot about their fuel program. They get a discounted rate from the so called big 7. Pilot, Loves, TA, Sapps Bros, Flying J, etc etc... with that discount, it should be passed down to the driver(the one paying for the fuel). But it wasnt, they would keep a percentage of the discount. I noticed this after reoptimizing for a fuel stop and was told the price i would pay is 3.83 a gallon. the sign posted was 4.08 a gallon... on my pay settlement, i paid 4.00 a gallon. there is a 17 cent difference, which they keep. After argueing with the fuel department about this, I was told to talk to CHANDLER ENGLAND.. he was head of the fuel department, and grandson of the the Owner.. he had a discussion on why they would keep the discount that is rightfully mine. The reply I got was, you are lucky you get anything, WE dont have to give you anything!! Well, from there I planned on turning in my truck. In the meantime, I did some digging and found a few things. I got my hands on a copy of a contract they give to their shippers, and the break down of what they charge for various things. here is a few things for you all:

detention pay... as a driver I am allowed $26 an hour after 3 hours of detention. England gets paid $75 an hour after one hour of dentention. So whos time is really being wasted here.. the driver or englands? and why is england keeping the money? I know its business, but is it good business?

stop off charges... as a driver, i am given $15 for the second stop, $20 for the third stop and $25 for the forth stop.. England actually gets $150 each = (1st) $250 each = (2nd) and $350 each = (3+) now who is getting ripped a new a*s here?

When a shipper specifically requests team service, an additional charge of .15 per mile will apply.. but that is not passed down to any of the teams.

there is a New York surcharge of $250. which is not passed down to the driver.

Hazardous material... is a shipper request service to transport hazardous material, there will be an additional charge of $150 for solo and $250 for teams. which is passed down to a driver, but only as an extra penny per mile.

And here is the big one.. Most truckers can barely survive as it is because of the price of fuel today. Well, England has a fuel surcharge in their contracts with shippers. It's on a sliding scale, depending on the price of fuel.
EXAMPLE... if the price of fuel is 1.06 to 1.08 a gallon there is no surcharge.
if its 2.21 to 2.234 a gallon, there will be a 23% fuel surcharge. the highest this contract goes to is 3.335 to 3.359 a gallon, there will be a 45.5% fuel surcharge. Well, we all know that the price of fuel has gone over $4 a gallon.. so you do the math. Oh and by the way.... the driver only gets a very small percentage of this fuel surcharge.. the ones buying the fuel and leasing the trucks are the ones getting screwed...
SO MY ADVISE IS TO NOT WORK FOR ENGLAND... AND IF STILL WANT TO, GO COMPANY. STAY AWAY FROM THE LEASE, ITS ALL ONE SIDED AND NOT GOOD FOR ANYONE.
