In November 2009, I went to C1 truck driving in Ft. Worth, TX so I could obtain my CDL and team with my husband. We were supposed to work for Choctaw Express in Oklahoma City. The first few days went o.k. because it was just paperwork, tests and studying for the CDL permit. No problem. After that, we went to the "yard". What a mess! 20 students standing around to learn the how to straight backing and 90 degree backing. What a joke! Mostly everyone was standing around with their hands in their pockets. There was no training to speak of. I don't know about the other students but I had never driven a clutch before, much less a big truck and all the instructors did was stand around and yell at you if you couldn't figure out how to do it. Like I said before, NO TRAINING. Once we were finally able to get into a truck and go out on the road, another big joke, with 3 other students in the truck, more yelling and not really showing you how to do it. Needless to say, I was very frustrated and humilitated by the whole experience. When I finally got my CDL, and I still don't have a clue how I passed, I was so happy just to leave that place! On the way home, I call Choctaw to see about going in for orientation. They schedule me and I ask, what about my husband? They tell me they could not accept him because, PAM, who owns Choctaw, apparantly would not hire him for health reasons. Of course, they didn't tell me this before I left C1 so we could see about finding another trucking company. Frustrated, again, I tell them I can't work for them if they will not hire my husband also, since we wanted to team drive. In the meantime, my husband and I get hired to drive for Covenant Transport. Because of the fact that I received little to no training at C1, I was not comfortable and neither was my husband, with my driving. Covenant knew that I was a student driver and he was my trainer. But, they still dispatched us as a team. My husband lost alot of sleep because of my lack of training and fell asleep at the wheel and drove off the road. No ticket, little damage to the truck and still Covenant terminated his employment. Now, we are unemployed and yet, I still owe C1 for "training". I will never use my CDL and feel because of the way we were treated by the trucking industry and particularly C1, that I should not have to pay them a dime. The whole experience was a joke and I guess I had to learn the hard way.

Shame on you

AUTHOR: GoodluckChuck - (United States of America)

C1 as with any business has there good and bad points but to drag them through the mud because of some unfourtunate circumstances and basic treatment by the trucking industry is unfair to the company and it's employees.

The trucking industry is not fair to new drivers, they prey on and profit from people in desperate situations. This is no secret. Even folks who aren't desperate need to walk through the minefield of predators looking to move frieght for less only to dispose of them when they feel like it!

Falling to sleep at the wheel must be avoided and noone will blame any company for letting someone go that does.

For other folks reviewing this posting please do not judge this company based on this report.

I seen things a little different...

AUTHOR: JaybirdnAustin - (United States of America)

I am a recent graduate of C1 truck driver training in Ft Worth Texas and I have a few things to say in rebuttal to this harsh attack on this company.

One of the first things you hear when you go start at this school is that they are NOT there to teach you to drive a truck. You will have 6 weeks with a company trainer who is supposed to do that. What they are there to do is get you your CDL which will enable you to go on to be trained with which ever company you decide to go to work for.

My first week was short, we started on the 2nd of January (a Tuesday). Lee Anderson did his level best to prepare us for our written CDL tests, and many of us passed them on the first try. He spent a decent amount of time discussing log books, shifting techniques, mountain driving, use of foot brakes and engine brakes. He answered all of our questions with patience and understanding and even told us that if at any time we had any questions we could come back and ask anytime. Even missing the first day of class, I don't feel like I was cheated out of any information that I needed to be successful.

My first impression of the yard was pretty scarey. It isn't the best kept up, the trucks on the yard are not in the best condition. During the first week it rained and it got NASTY. Those are about the worse things I can say about it.

Lets talk about the training in general. Everyone of those trainers are very proficient in what they know. They took the time to show us straight line backing, how to use our mirrors, clutch usage, pretrip inspection, air brake test, how to drop and hook trailers. They worked with us on our log books, we had train safety training there wasn't anything that wasn't gone over.

My on the road training was as close to perfect as it could get, I was put with Rolland to run the shifting course, and he took time to explain how we should shift and with tremendous patience and understanding had us all doing it within two days. After a couple days on the shifting course we went on to our test truck, the instructor which was Ms. Peggy. She is probably the most amazing trainer I have ever met. She spent time with us honing our shifting skills, taking us on a ton of road trips so we could get a real feel for what driving was like. She even took us through a truck stop and showed us the things we shouldn't waist our money on. I'm pretty sure we could have went to a school that was nicer, with better equipment, but they wouldn't have Peggy and therefore it wouldn't be worth it.

In conclusion, the only thing I can say about this ripoff report is that you get out of your training at C1 what you put into it. I did see a lot of the things going on that this person was complaining about but it was always people who didn't show any initiative in their training. If you stand around with your hands in your pockets, and are still able to pass your CDL tests, then that's what you are going to get to do.
