I received a mailer from capital one (mastercard platinum), with a $ 3000.00 limit pre-approved. The 0% interest until november, and a 12.9 interest (flex) starting after initial period ends, was a perfect solution to transfer my providian visa card (with a $2,500 limit that i was close to maxing out on), if i paid the capital one card aggressively until november.

In the mailer it also stated (along with thier internet site) that applications could be submitted and approved in 60 seconds in most cases. Low and behold i was not a part of that most cases ratio. that was my 1st red flag. I should have followed my instincts, but i didn't. after 8 days I received a capital one platinum in mail. The intro package included a lot of fine writing that was never mentioned in the mailer i received, and there wasn't even a credit limit stated yet. It said i had to call, get a pin # and find out my credit limit offered.

I really got nervous from this dog and pony show, and called the ph# given for my magical, mysterious surprise that i believed was the truth on my pre-approval limit from the begining. I learned they approved me for $300.00 instead! what an insult! i have learned since then that capital one does this with everybody that signs up. (in other words, don't feel bad)my credit report they claim to have pulled had no bearing on the limit decision they said. "great a "ding" for nothing.)

I am deeply insulted, and will pursue this issue with every means possible. If i had known this offer was targeted twoards high risk applicants, i would have never repied to thier offer. (no offense to those ligimate low scorers). What a bait and switch for the wrong audience. there is so much more involved in this, but rest assured, this will be exploited to help the next victims of this trap...................... thank you mark a brown.

have no trouble with Capital one

AUTHOR: Nolon - (U.S.A.)

I have a capital one credit card. Sadly to say I accidently went over my limit, but other then that I never have no trouble with my card. I was before I lost my job paying my card off before the bill was due,but for now I have to pay off my maxed out card. I don't have good memory. I can't recall what Capital one offered me when I got the card, but they gave me a credit limit of 500. Anyways just thought I should state this. Otherwise I have no trouble with Capital one. Thanks.

Am I lucky?

AUTHOR: Greg - (U.S.A.)

Well, first I received the Capitol One with a $3000 limit (yes, not $300, but full credit line), and now, Providian granted me a Line of $3500.

Providian was sending me an offer almost daily, no annual fee, etc. Well, I now have $6500 in new credit lines, less than 1 year post BK. I am pleased.

#6 UPDATE Employee

Mark's not too bright

AUTHOR: Lisa - (U.S.A.)

Uh, yeah, I'll pay off my maxed out card with another card...and I'm betting that once he pays Providian off with Capital One, he still goes and wracks up charges to his limit back on Providian.

Providian and Capital One helped me re-establish my credit after bankruptcy 7 years ago. I still have my original Cap One card, with the 700 limit they gave me. Never a late payment, never over limit, never bounced a check. Although they didn't up the limit on that card, they did give me a platinum card, with a 0% intro rate, and a low fixed rate after that, with a 7k limit.

Providian started me off with an unsecured card for 500, with a 21% interest rate. 7 years of perfect credit later, I have a 10k limit and a 14% rate. But I've learned my lesson...when I get the offers in the mail that have "checks" to use to transfer balances, I read ALL the fine print, and if it's a 0% for X number of months, I'll transfer whatever balances I have (which are small, I learned my lesson that way too) and make sure I pay it off before the 0% promotion ends.

Four words for you, Marky-Mark

Mark's so smart he's got a Providian card

AUTHOR: David - (U.S.A.)

And he thinks Capital One cardholders are idiots. Sorry you blocked this site Mark now you won't know what to do the day that Providian rips you off and turns your $2500 balance into $5000. Or maybe you'll be one of Providian's "lucky ones" and your account gets sold Emerge. They will help you turn that $2500 balance into $7500.

Naive?

AUTHOR: Greg - (U.S.A.)

Why would someone be naive to believe the $3000 credit line offer? Again, I received the pre-approval, and applied, and received the entire credit line of $3000. I doubt I am the only one that received a full credit line; my credit is terrible, and only 6 months post Chapter 7

#12 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Capital One not a Ripoff..designed to re-establish credit.

AUTHOR: Michael - (U.S.A.)

I'm not defending Capital One on their promotional tactics but you have to be naive to think that an offer of a $3000.00 credit limit is reality. I have three Capital One credit cards, two of them have $1600.00 credit limits and the other one has a $600.00 limit. I started out with a $300.00 limit on each one and over the years I have requested increases in my credit limits.

They will usually grant an increase of $100.00 every six months if your payments are on time and you don't exceed your credit limit. Now my balances are not near the credit limits and I can use the available credit for emergency purposes. Capital One credit cards are designed for people with poor credit to help them re-establish their credit, that's why they are able to charge high interest rates and annual fees and high signup fees.

Someone with good credit should not be applying for Capital One credit cards but rather sign up with American Express or a major bank with low interest rates in the 4 to 5 percent range. It appears to me that you can not control your spending and by maxing out your credit and looking for more credit just so you can spend more of what you don't have, you will eventually get to a point where you will owe $10,000 or $20,000 or even more on credits cards and probably loose your job some day or have financial problems due to personal relationships and be stuck with tons of bills and wonder why.

Not a Rip Off...I am about 6 months out of a Chapter 7.

AUTHOR: Greg - (U.S.A.)

I have seen so many boards claiming this "false credit limit" Capital One is offering. Well, I got a pre-approved offer for $3000. I sent it in, and did receive the entire credit line. I was expecting perhaps $500. And yes, the bank is Capital One, and I am about 6 months out of a Chapter 7.

I have to pay the $59 annual fee for now, but I am very happy with the other terms.

Smile. Be Happy. HEY! I's an unsecured card...

AUTHOR: J0seph - (U.S.A.)

People who do not have enough credit worthiness to realize a creditline in the thousands of dollars, know who they are. When I received my invitation to apply for the "pre-approved Platinum Business Card, I could not help but scratch my headwith the creditline mention of $4000, approved.

Why would any bank, person, or other financial institution issue someone a $4000 line of creditagainst a record of lengthy bad debt, maxed out other cards, and/or no other issued cards?

So, when I sent the paperwork in to Capital One, I wanted to see if this pre-approved offer was on the level. I have been refused by Capital One, 5 or 6 times over the past few years.

I have been working at cleaning my credit up for the past decade, without bankruptcy filing. It has been a long and slow process.

My Capital One Platinum Business card arrived a couple of days ago with a $300 line of credit on it.

I can'i imagine why any one who would not be happy with any credit card company sending them an unsecured cardwith no additional charges or yearly fees attached.

The issuing of credit cards is tighteningand for anyone to expect a creditline, which is not reflective of their credit worthiness, is not in touch withtheir finances very well.

I thank Capital One for the card they mailed me. It's been a long ride to a new credit car. The $300 creditline is reflective of my hopes of a second chance.

If your insulted by a response you get from a company, there is no one holding a gun to your head, find another company.
