Last week, our Toyota 4Runner was in the dealer for repair. We learned from the dearler that the repairs would cost about $3500. We decided to trade in the vehicle for a new one at that dealer and was offered $10,000 trade-in allowance based on our statement that the vehicle was in good shape. That was acceptable, so we picked a vehicle and waited to sign the papers.
The dealer then checked the Carfax report and said that vehicle was worth only $4000 since an accident we had 7 months earlier was reported as a "total loss." We couldn't stop our lives and be without the vehicle while we spent time to correct the Carfax report. We didn't know how long the error would take to correct; the dealer said that Carfax info can't be corrected.
We have never worked with Carfax, so we negotiated the best we could with the situation. The shock of having to pay an extra $6000 due to an error in the reported Carfax data was compounded by the dealer's implication that we lied about the condition of the vehicle. At least the dealer was polite about it.
A check with the insurance company and the repair shop the next business day showed that the vehicle was repaired completely and that neither party submitted a claim that the vehicle was a total loss. Each of those companies have provided us with written statements confirming the facts.
Now, we're trying to fix our reputation and attempt to recover the financial loss. Carfax won't deal with us since we're no longer the owner of the vehicle, even if we have gone through the trouble of collecting the facts. The car dealer hasn't been motivated since they're not out any money. We met with the car dealer yesterday and politely asked them to file a correction request with Carfax. We've provided all the data we've collected.
How do we fix our reputaion at the dealer? We've been customers with them for 8 years and one of the sales reps lives next door. Is there any way to recover the $6000 loss?
